Target’s Drive Up Returns let you start an eligible return in the Target app or on Target.com and hand the item to a team member from your car. The service was announced in February 2023; today, whether you can use it depends on the item and store.
How to make a Target return with Drive Up
- Open your order. In the Target app or on Target.com, go to the order’s Order Details page and start a return.
- Choose Drive Up if it appears. The option is shown only when the item and location are eligible. If it is not offered, choose another return method.
- Put the item in your car and signal that you are on the way. Use the app or the order details to let Target know you are coming.
- Check in at the store. A team member will meet you and complete the return. Target says refund details arrive by email, usually before you leave.
Target’s Drive Up Returns instructions advise customers to re-park and contact Guest Services if there is a problem with the handoff.
Who can use Drive Up Returns?
The return option is available at stores that offer Drive Up, but not for every item. Start the return from your order rather than arriving with an item and assuming a curbside handoff is available. Target’s Drive Up service page describes the service as available at nearly every Target store nationwide; the more specific customer-help guidance makes clear that eligibility still depends on the store and item.
How Target’s return policy affects eligibility
Drive Up is a way to hand off an eligible return; it does not change the return window or other terms for the item.

What Target announced in 2023—and what that number means
On February 28, 2023, Target announced that Drive Up Returns would roll out that spring after a successful pilot. The company said it expected the service to reach nearly 2,000 locations by the end of that summer. That was a rollout forecast at the time, not a current count of participating stores.

Drive Up or Guest Services?
Drive Up may be more convenient when the return appears as an option for your item and store. An in-store return through Guest Services is the alternative if Drive Up is unavailable or the curbside handoff encounters a problem. Target does not charge for Drive Up Returns.
Target has not published a measured time-saving or customer-satisfaction figure for the service, so there is no basis for estimating how much faster it is than an in-store return.
