The usual process is to start the return in Amazon, choose the UPS method shown, then either take the unpackaged item and QR code to The UPS Store or attach Amazon’s prepaid label to a properly packed box.
Do not ship the package independently through UPS before creating the Amazon return. A shipment you pay for yourself may not be connected to the order, and Amazon may not reimburse it.
How to return an Amazon package through UPS
- Sign in to Amazon.com or open the Amazon Shopping app.
- Open Your Orders.
- Find the purchase and select Return or replace items.
- Select the item you are sending back.
- Choose a reason from the Reason for return menu.
- Continue through the prompts until Amazon displays the available return methods.
- Select the UPS option only if it is listed for that item and your location.
Amazon may show several choices, such as The UPS Store, Whole Foods Market, Kohl’s, Staples, FedEx Office, or a mail-in option. The available choices depend on factors including the seller, fulfillment method, item, return reason, destination, and local capacity. A different Amazon order may have different options.
Identify which UPS return Amazon gave you

Returning an item with an Amazon QR code
If Amazon says no box or label is needed, save the QR code displayed after you confirm the return. Amazon generally also sends it by email. You can display it from the Amazon app or from the email at the counter.

- Open the return confirmation and verify that it names The UPS Store.
- Bring the item in the condition Amazon requests. Include accessories, manuals, or components if the instructions require them.
- Show the QR code to the associate and say it is an Amazon return.
- Wait for the code to scan successfully.
- Ask for and keep the drop-off receipt or other acceptance confirmation.
A QR code issued for Whole Foods, Kohl’s, Staples, or another partner is not automatically valid at The UPS Store. Similarly, a UPS Customer Center, UPS Access Point, or independent pack-and-ship business may not process an Amazon QR-code return. Use the location type named in Amazon’s instructions rather than relying on a map search for “UPS.”
Returning an Amazon item with a UPS label
Some returns require you to package the item. Download or print the label supplied by Amazon, place the item in a suitable box with adequate protection, and attach the label so the barcode is flat and readable. Remove or cover old shipping labels and barcodes.
Then take the parcel to the UPS drop-off location identified by Amazon. Keep the acceptance receipt and tracking number until Amazon shows that the return and refund are complete.
The UPS Store can sell packaging or create a shipping label, but do not assume those services are covered by Amazon. If Amazon supplied a label, use that label and follow its packaging instructions instead of buying a separate shipment.

What to do if you lose the QR code or label
- Open Amazon and go to Your Orders.
- Locate the order.
- Open the return status or return details link.
- View the QR code, reprint the label, or review the selected drop-off instructions.
Check that the item and return method match the original authorization before going to the store. Starting a new return or selecting a different partner can generate different instructions.
How much does an Amazon UPS return cost?
There is no universal rule that every Amazon return through UPS is free. Amazon may offer a free UPS return, a free return through another partner, or a paid UPS option. The amount shown in Amazon’s return workflow controls what you will pay for that return.
Read the final confirmation screen before selecting the method. A fee displayed by Amazon is different from an ordinary UPS retail shipping charge. If you independently purchase UPS postage, you may be responsible for the full cost even if the item otherwise qualifies for a free Amazon return.
When will Amazon issue the refund?
The UPS counter scan confirms that the package was accepted; it does not always mean Amazon has finished inspecting it or approved the refund.

Some eligible returns receive an advance or faster refund after drop-off. Other refunds are issued only after Amazon receives, inspects, and approves the item. Track the status in Your Orders and keep the receipt until the refund appears on your original payment method or as Amazon credit.
If the refund is delayed, compare the receipt’s tracking information with the return status in Amazon. Contact Amazon support with the order number and acceptance receipt if the package shows as delivered but the return remains unresolved.
Common UPS return problems
Amazon does not offer UPS
This does not necessarily indicate an error. UPS may not be an eligible method for that product or location. Select one of the methods Amazon actually offers, or contact Amazon if you believe the available options do not match the seller’s instructions.
The QR code will not scan
Confirm that you are at the correct partner location and that the code belongs to this item. A code for another return partner is not interchangeable. Reopen the return details in Amazon and ask the associate to scan the current code from the app or email.

The store says the item must be boxed
You may have selected a standard UPS drop-off rather than The UPS Store no-box service. The item may also be excluded from consolidated or label-free handling. Follow Amazon’s exact packaging requirement. Do not leave the item at the counter without confirming that the store accepts the selected method.
The return is large, heavy, or contains a battery
Large or heavy items may receive a conventional prepaid label rather than a QR-code return. For certain seller-fulfilled returns, Amazon’s large-and-heavy thresholds include more than 90 pounds, length over 96 inches, or length plus girth over 130 inches, with some programs allowing weights up to 150 pounds.
Hazardous materials, dangerous goods, and some battery-containing products may be restricted from ordinary UPS return handling. Do not put a potentially regulated item into a normal return stream without checking Amazon’s instructions and the carrier’s requirements.
A third-party seller sent a label
Use the label and packaging directions supplied for that return. Seller-fulfilled orders can follow a different process from Amazon-fulfilled orders, so the absence of a QR code does not mean the return is invalid.

Financial checklist before leaving the UPS Store
- Confirm the return was created in Amazon.
- Check whether the method is free or paid.
- Verify that the location is specifically authorized for the QR code or label.
- Keep the drop-off receipt and tracking number.
- Photograph the item and package if its condition could be disputed.
- Monitor the return and refund status in Your Orders.
- Do not discard the receipt until the refund has posted.
FAQ
Can I take any Amazon return to UPS?
No. UPS must appear as an available method for that particular item and location in Amazon’s return workflow. If Amazon does not offer UPS, use one of the listed methods instead.
Can I return an Amazon package to any UPS location with a QR code?
Usually no. Amazon QR-code returns commonly specify The UPS Store. A UPS Customer Center, UPS Access Point, or another pack-and-ship store may not accept that code.
Do I need a box for an Amazon UPS return?
Only if the selected return instructions require one. A no-box, no-label The UPS Store return is packaged by the store. A standard UPS label return generally must be boxed and labeled before drop-off.
Does the UPS scan mean my Amazon refund is guaranteed?
No. The scan proves that UPS accepted the package. Amazon may refund after the scan for some eligible returns, while other refunds wait until Amazon receives and inspects the item.

Start the return in Amazon before going to UPS. If Amazon gives you a The UPS Store — no box or label needed option, bring the item and QR code to the authorized store. If Amazon gives you a printable label, package the item yourself and use that label. Keep the receipt until Amazon confirms the refund, and never assume that every UPS location, Amazon item, or return method is free.
