For most products bought directly from Dell in the United States, Dell’s stated return window is 30 days from the invoice date, subject to exclusions and any different agreement or qualifying promotion. Start the request through Dell Orders and wait for Dell’s return authorization before shipping anything: Dell says an unauthorized return will not receive a refund or credit, and it will not ship the product back to you. The steps below are US-specific; return rules and timelines differ by country and customer segment.
How to return a Dell order in the United States
Use the order portal to request a return, receive authorization, and follow the shipping instructions Dell provides. Do not send the product until Dell issues a credit return authorization (CRA).
- Find the order. Sign in to My Account and open Orders. Dell may assign a separate order number to each shipment, so check each relevant order. Dell’s order-support page also accepts a Dell Purchase ID.
- Start the request. In Orders, choose Return or Exchange items, or go to Dell’s order-support page. Verify your identity and submit the return request.
- Check eligibility and wait for authorization. Follow the portal’s prompts. Ship only after Dell provides the CRA and return instructions. Dell’s US return policy warns that an item sent without a CRA is unauthorized and will not receive a refund or credit; Dell also says it will not ship that item back to you.
- Pack the product. Use the original packaging and include the media, documentation, and other items that came with it.
- Send it using Dell’s instructions. Use the return label and the pickup or carrier drop-off option offered for your return. For drop-off, Dell says it emails the label.
- Track the return. In My Account, open Orders and select View Return Details to monitor the return. Dell issues a refund after it receives and validates an authorized return.
- Contact Dell if the refund is late. If it has not appeared after Dell’s stated processing interval, use Get Help in the Orders area of My Account.
Check the deadline and whether your purchase qualifies
Dell US says most products purchased directly from Dell can be returned within 30 days of the invoice date. That is a Dell policy term, not a general consumer-rights deadline. A separate agreement or a qualifying promotion may change the window, and some products and purchase types are excluded. Certain commercial purchase-order or payment-terms purchases are outside this policy. If you bought from a retailer or another seller rather than Dell, request the return under that seller’s policy.
There are two dates to watch: the invoice date determines the usual return window, while the authorization date starts a separate shipping deadline. Dell says it must receive an authorized product within 30 days of authorization; otherwise, it may reduce or eliminate the refund or credit. Follow the dates and instructions shown for your specific order.

What can reduce a Dell refund?
A return does not automatically mean a full refund. Dell says the amount may be reduced by original shipping and handling, an applicable restocking fee, or the value of promotional items. The treatment depends on the purchase and return reason.

Because eligibility and deductions depend on the order, reason, timing, and customer type, check the return terms Dell gives you rather than assuming every charge will be refunded. Bundles, promotions, rewards, repeated returns, and terms-of-sale issues may need special handling.

How long a Dell refund takes
Dell US says refunds may take up to 10–15 business days after Dell receives the returned order. The clock described on Dell’s support page begins at receipt, not when you submit the request or hand the package to a carrier. Check View Return Details for your return’s status; if the stated interval passes without a refund, contact Dell through Get Help in My Account’s Orders area.

The steps above describe Dell’s US process and should not be treated as a universal policy. Use the Dell website for the country and customer segment where you made the purchase. For example, Dell Canada describes a similar account-based process and a refund interval of up to 10–15 business days after receipt, while also noting shipping deductions and possible business-segment restocking fees (Dell Canada order support). Dell UK describes 14 calendar days for certain consumer product, service, and software orders, with conditions that differ depending on whether software has been used or services completed (Dell UK order support). These are market-specific examples, not alternatives to the terms for your own order.
