Then account for each questioned deposit using its actual source and records that support it. Submit through the channel specified in the notice, check everything before sending, and keep the acknowledgement: the Department says an e-Proceedings response cannot be edited or withdrawn after submission.
What to do first when a cash deposit is questioned
Do not begin by guessing what answer the Department expects. A notice about deposits asks about particular transactions in a particular tax year and under a particular provision. Your response needs to address those facts, not offer a generic explanation for cash deposits.

- Authenticate the communication. Use the Income Tax Department’s online “Authenticate the Notice/Order issued by ITD” service to check the communication and its Document Identification Number (DIN). The Department says communications issued on or after 1 October 2019 should bear a DIN. Treat that as an authentication check, not as a substitute for reading the notice.
- Download and read the entire notice. Check all pages, annexures and transaction schedules. Note who issued it, the section cited, the assessment year or other tax year stated, the deposits and amounts identified, what explanation or records are requested, where to respond and the due date.
- Make a working copy of the questions. List every deposit the notice asks about, including dates and amounts. If the notice refers to a mismatch or information source, record exactly what it says rather than inferring details it does not provide.
- Mark the deadline and response channel. Use the date in your actual communication. There is no safe generic deadline to apply to every unexplained-deposit inquiry. In particular, the Department’s 15-day period for certain defective-return notices relates to a different procedure; it should not be assumed to apply here.
The Department describes e-Proceedings as an electronic platform for registered users and authorised representatives to view and respond to notices, intimations and letters. The route and instructions in your own notice still matter: not every communication necessarily uses the same workflow.

The Department’s e-Proceedings FAQ describes the service as “a simple way to respond electronically to all notices / intimation / letters issued by Income Tax Department.” That broad description explains the platform’s purpose, but it does not mean every communication uses the same response steps or deadline. Read the notice for the specific action expected in your case.

Keep a copy of the notice in the form in which you received or downloaded it. If the notice contains an annexure or list of transactions, use that list as the starting point for your reconciliation. Do not rely on memory, a short notification or a partial screenshot when the complete communication may contain the year, provision, evidence request or submission instructions.
How to reconcile each deposit to its real source
Build a transaction-by-transaction reconciliation before drafting your response. For every deposit named in the notice, identify where the cash actually came from, which records support that account, and whether the dates and amounts align with the bank entry. These are practical ways to organise your explanation, not a Department-issued exhaustive checklist or a list of explanations to choose from.
| Possible source, only if true | Records to consider | What to reconcile |
|---|---|---|
| Cash withdrawn earlier and later redeposited | Bank statements or withdrawal records for the earlier cash withdrawal, plus the statement or deposit slip showing the later deposit | Whether the withdrawal preceded the deposit, whether the amounts are consistent, and whether the explanation accounts for any gap in time or amount |
| Business receipts recorded in books | Cash book, invoices, sales records or ledger entries, alongside relevant bank records | Whether the recorded receipts and dates correspond to the cash deposited and are consistent with the business records |
| Loan or gift | Relevant signed loan or gift documentation and records supporting the source, together with bank or deposit records where applicable | Who provided the funds, when they were provided, the amount, and whether the supporting records match the deposit explanation |
| Inheritance or sale proceeds | Relevant inheritance papers or sale documents, along with records that connect the proceeds to the cash deposited | Whether the documents support the claimed source and whether timing and amount reconcile to the deposit |
| Cash held before the deposit or another source | Contemporaneous records, if available, that support how the cash was obtained and held | Whether the explanation is supported by records and accounts for the amount and timing questioned |
For your working table, use one row per deposit and include the notice’s date and amount, your factual source explanation, the supporting documents and any discrepancy you still need to explain. If several deposits draw on the same source, show how the total source amount relates to the individual deposits. A clear reconciliation helps you spot missing links before you submit; it does not make a claim true if the underlying records do not support it.
A useful sequence is to copy the date and amount from the notice, locate the matching bank entry, identify the source event, and then locate the record supporting that event. Keep the chain visible. For example, an explanation based on an earlier withdrawal should connect the withdrawal record to the later deposit; an explanation based on business receipts should connect the relevant business records to the deposited cash. Avoid describing the same funds in inconsistent ways across rows.
Where multiple deposits relate to one source, explain the relationship rather than simply repeating the same sentence for each entry. The reader should be able to see how the source amount was allocated across the deposits and whether the total adds up. If the source only accounts for part of a deposit, identify the remaining part and explain it separately if you can. Do not make arithmetic or timing appear more certain than your records allow.
Handle gaps and discrepancies directly
Dates or amounts may not match perfectly. For example, the bank entry might differ from the amount in a ledger, or a withdrawal and redeposit may be separated by a period that needs explaining. State what the records show and what they do not show. Do not silently alter figures or present a proposed explanation as established fact.

If records are missing or inconsistent, describe that accurately and seek qualified advice before making an assertion the available evidence cannot support. Do not manufacture receipts, backdate agreements or describe another person’s money as yours without explaining the underlying facts. A plausible category such as “loan,” “gift” or “business receipts” is not a substitute for evidence that it is what actually happened.
Compare explanations by their factual fit, not by which label sounds most convenient. Ask whether the source is true, whether the dates and amounts reconcile to the bank entry, whether contemporaneous business or third-party records support it, and whether the explanation fits the year and provision in the notice. These checks help expose weaknesses before filing; they do not guarantee that the Department will accept a response.
Which supporting documents to attach
Select records that support the specific explanation for each deposit. Depending on the facts, that could mean bank statements and deposit slips; cash books, invoices and sales ledgers; prior withdrawal records; signed loan or gift documents with source records; or inheritance and sale papers. These examples are practical possibilities, not a universal set of documents required for every notice. The notice’s request and the facts of your case should guide what you provide.
- Connect the document to the deposit it supports. A bank entry, date, amount, ledger item or third-party record should make that connection understandable.
- Check that dates, amounts and names are consistent across the explanation and attachments. If they are not, address the difference rather than leaving the reader to resolve it.
- Use complete, legible records relevant to the question. If a requested item is unavailable, do not imply that you attached it; explain the limitation accurately.
- Keep a copy of the exact response and files you submit. Organise your working records by deposit so you can identify which evidence supports each statement.
The Income Tax Department’s e-Proceedings User Manual confirms that the workflow supports document attachments. It does not establish that any particular scanner, tax software or other product is necessary to answer a notice.
Think of the attachments as support for particular statements, not as a pile of unrelated paperwork. If you say a deposit came from a recorded business receipt, include the relevant business record and the bank record that shows the deposit. If you rely on a loan or gift, include records that support both the transfer or provision of money and the source you are describing, where available. The precise records depend on what happened and what the notice asks.
Keep the original records and prepare copies for submission. Before attaching a file, check that it opens, is readable and contains the relevant page or entry. If a document includes information unrelated to the question, use judgment about relevance and seek professional advice if you are unsure what to submit. The Department’s material confirms attachment functionality but does not prescribe a universal document list or a specific document-preparation product.

How to respond through e-Proceedings
For a case handled through e-Proceedings, the Department’s User Manual describes this route. Follow the notice if it directs you elsewhere or gives different instructions.
- Log in to the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal using your account.
- Open Pending Actions > e-Proceedings.
- Select the relevant notice or proceeding, then view or download the notice and any attached details.
- Select Submit Response and provide a response that addresses the questions raised.
- Attach the records that support your explanation, checking that each file is legible and corresponds to the point it is meant to support.
- Review the response and attachments before submitting. After submission, save the final response, acknowledgement and transaction ID.
The manual also describes an authorised-representative route. If you use a representative, coordinate so the submission addresses the notice’s exact questions and you retain a record of what was filed. The Department’s material confirms the route exists; it does not endorse a particular provider.
Use the portal instructions as a practical sequence, but do not assume that the existence of an e-Proceedings account settles whether that is the correct route for your notice. Check the communication itself. If the notice specifies another method or provides a different process, follow those directions or seek advice promptly rather than sending the same response through an unverified channel.

What to check before you submit
The Department says a submitted e-Proceedings response cannot be edited or withdrawn. Treat the final review as essential, not as a formality. Confirm that you are responding to the right notice and that the facts and documents fit the tax year and transactions it identifies.
- Notice: Is this the authenticated communication you intend to answer, and have you reviewed all pages and annexures?
- Year and provision: Does your response refer to the assessment or tax year and section printed on the notice, rather than assuming a different year’s rules apply?
- Coverage: Have you addressed every deposit or question identified, or clearly explained what remains unanswered?
- Accuracy: Do your dates, amounts and source descriptions match the records? Have you distinguished facts from anything you cannot establish?
- Attachments: Are the files relevant, legible and actually attached? Do they support the statement they accompany?
- Submission proof: After filing, have you saved the response, acknowledgement and transaction ID?
The Department’s e-Proceedings FAQ says a response can be viewed after submission and that the portal’s submit option may become unavailable before the proceeding’s limitation date. Do not treat the appearance of an open portal option as a reason to delay until the last moment; follow the notice’s due date and save your submission record.

The portal availability caveat is an additional reason not to assume that you can always submit later, but it does not replace the due date printed in your notice.
What a cash-deposit notice does—and does not—establish
A cash deposit is a transaction that may need an explanation; the fact of a deposit alone does not establish that it is unexplained income. Your task is to account for the source using the facts and records relevant to the particular notice.
The Gazette of India’s Notification No. 48/2026, hosted by the Income Tax Department, places “Unexplained money etc. u/s 69A” within a “Income chargeable u/s 115BBE” reporting schedule in 2026 return material. Those labels show how that return material categorises the item; they do not establish that a particular bank deposit falls under section 69A, settle the law for every tax year, or determine the tax rate, penalty or interest in an individual case.
The Department’s e-Proceedings FAQ refers to the Income-tax Act, 1961 and the Income-tax Act, 2025 in separate procedural contexts. The year-by-year mapping of provisions is not established here. Anchor any legal conclusion to the year and provision stated in your notice, and have a qualified Indian tax practitioner review a contested or high-value case. A generic article cannot determine the consequences for your facts.
For that reason, do not infer the applicable rate, penalty, interest or outcome from a reporting label alone. The tax year, facts, provision and operative law matter. If the notice cites a provision you do not understand, or appears to refer to a different statutory framework than you expected, note the exact wording and ask a qualified Indian tax practitioner to check it against the year stated in the communication.

When to get professional help
Consider consulting a qualified Indian tax practitioner or authorised representative if the source is disputed, your records are incomplete or inconsistent, several transactions need to be reconciled, or the notice alleges a substantial adjustment. Bring the complete notice and annexures, your deposit reconciliation, relevant bank records and any supporting documents. A professional can help you assess how the notice’s stated provision applies to its stated year; do not assume an explanation is safe merely because it resembles one of the common source categories.

Professional help is especially worth considering before submission if an explanation depends on another person’s funds, the records conflict, the source accounts for only part of the deposits, or you are unsure what a request in the notice means. An authorised representative may respond through the route described in the Department’s manual. The Department confirms that this option exists but does not endorse a particular adviser, so evaluate credentials and scope of assistance independently.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first after receiving a notice about cash deposits?
Authenticate the communication using the Income Tax Department’s notice-authentication service, then read every page and annexure. Record the DIN, issuing authority, section, tax year, questioned transactions, requested records, response route and deadline. Reconcile each deposit to its real source before drafting a response.
What proof should I provide for cash deposits?
Provide records that support the actual source of each deposit. Depending on what happened, that may include bank statements or deposit slips, cash books and sales records, earlier withdrawal records, loan or gift documentation and source records, or inheritance and sale papers. There is no universal document list; follow the notice and connect each document to the deposit it supports.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I change my e-Proceedings answer after submitting it?
The Department says an e-Proceedings response cannot be edited or withdrawn after submission. Review the facts, year, response and attachments carefully first, then save the submitted response, acknowledgement and transaction ID. The FAQ also says the response can be viewed after submission.
What is the deadline to reply to an unexplained cash deposit notice?
Use the deadline in your own communication. There is no generic deadline that safely applies to every deposit inquiry. The Department’s 15-day period for certain defective-return notices is for a different procedure and should not be transferred to this type of notice.
What tax rate applies to an unexplained cash deposit?
That cannot be answered responsibly without the relevant tax year, the provision cited, the facts and the law applicable to that year. The 2026 return material labels unexplained money under section 69A in a section 115BBE reporting schedule, but that label does not determine the treatment or rate for every year or every deposit.
The Bottom Line
Authenticate the notice, use its stated year, section and deadline, and reconcile every questioned deposit to its real source with records that support the explanation. Submit through the channel specified in the communication, review carefully because an e-Proceedings response cannot be edited or withdrawn, and keep the final response, acknowledgement and transaction ID.
