How to Apply for Social Security Benefits for Your Dependent Children

Apply for a child’s Social Security benefits by identifying the parent record and claim type, contacting Social Security, and gathering the records that fit the child’s circumstances. Survivor applications for children cannot be completed online under SSA’s June 2026 guidance.

To apply for Social Security benefits for a child, first identify whether the claim is based on a parent’s retirement benefits, disability benefits, or death. Then contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or a local Social Security office. For a child’s survivor claim, call or visit an office: Social Security’s June 2026 guidance says that application cannot be completed online. Apply promptly, even if you are still gathering documents; Social Security says it can help obtain records you do not have.

Start by identifying the parent record and type of claim

A child’s application is tied to a parent’s Social Security record. The first question is whether the parent is receiving retirement benefits, is disabled, or has died. The application route and supporting evidence can differ by situation, so tell Social Security which parent’s record is involved and what has happened.

Eligibility is not determined by the child’s age alone. It depends on the worker’s earnings record as well as the child’s circumstances, including age, school attendance, disability status, and legal relationship to the worker. Contacting Social Security is the way to have the agency assess the specific record and claim; an application does not guarantee approval.

It helps to describe the situation plainly when you contact the agency: whether the parent is receiving retirement benefits, is receiving disability benefits, or has died; how the child is related to that parent; and the child’s age and school or disability circumstances. These details point SSA toward the relevant family, disability, or survivor-benefit process. Do not assume that a child qualifies just because a parent receives a benefit, or that one family’s outcome will apply to another. SSA must consider the worker’s record and the child’s individual circumstances.

Claim basis What to clarify with Social Security Practical filing point
Parent receives retirement benefits Whether the child and worker’s record meet the applicable family-benefit rules, and what evidence is needed for the child’s age and relationship. Use Social Security’s family-benefit application information and ask an SSA representative how to file for the child.
Parent is disabled Whether the child and worker’s record meet the applicable rules, and whether school attendance or disability information is relevant. Describe the parent’s disability-benefit status when you contact Social Security; the agency will explain the process for the child’s claim.
Parent has died The child’s relationship to the worker and age, school, or disability circumstances that may affect eligibility. Call Social Security or visit an office. The child’s survivor application cannot be completed online under SSA’s June 2026 guidance.

The first two rows are not a substitute for an eligibility decision: the reviewed Social Security application guidance does not establish a child’s eligibility from a parent’s retirement or disability status alone. Ask the agency to evaluate the individual claim.

The application overview has separate entry points for child applicants and for family, disability, and survivor benefits. If you are unsure which label fits, explain the facts to SSA rather than trying to choose a route based on a general description. The important first step is identifying the worker’s record and the event or benefit connected to it.

Check the age, school, and relationship rules for a deceased worker

Social Security says an unmarried child of a deceased worker may qualify for survivor benefits if the child is 17 or younger; is 18 or 19 and attending elementary or secondary school full time; or is any age and has a disability that began before age 22. These are eligibility conditions to discuss with SSA, not an automatic approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The age and school categories are distinct. A child who is 17 or younger may meet the age condition described by SSA. For an 18- or 19-year-old, full-time attendance at an elementary or secondary school is part of the stated condition. A child of any age may be considered under the disability route if the disability began before age 22. If more than one category could apply, tell the representative the relevant facts rather than deciding that only one applies.

The agency’s Benefits for Children publication says benefits generally stop at 18. A qualifying full-time elementary or secondary student may continue to receive benefits, usually until graduation or two months after reaching 19, whichever comes first. Follow Social Security’s notice and attendance-certification instructions if the child is a student. Childhood disability benefits may continue beyond age 18 when the disability began before age 22.

For a student, do not treat the age range as the only requirement: the full-time school condition matters, and SSA’s notice and attendance-certification instructions should guide what to submit. If the child is approaching age 18, is already 18 or 19, or is nearing graduation, ask SSA what certification is needed and when. The publication describes the usual endpoint as graduation or two months after the child turns 19, whichever comes first; the agency should address the child’s actual school and benefit circumstances.

For a child with a disability, the key point in the stated rule is when the disability began: before age 22. That does not by itself establish entitlement. SSA identifies a disability report and medical-release forms for a disabled adult child, so be prepared to ask how to complete those forms and what medical information the agency needs. Do not assume that a diagnosis alone answers the eligibility question.

Relationship rules can also matter. Social Security notes that in certain circumstances married children, stepchildren, adopted children, grandchildren, and step-grandchildren may qualify. Do not assume that a family relationship automatically meets the rule: tell SSA how the child is related to the worker and ask what evidence applies to that relationship.

If the child is a stepchild, for example, the application guidance identifies evidence of the worker’s marriage to the child’s parent as potentially relevant. Adoption evidence may be relevant for an adopted child. For a grandchild or step-grandchild, or a married child, ask the representative which relationship rules and records apply; the general list is not enough to determine eligibility. Accurate relationship details help SSA identify the correct rule without promising that the claim will be approved.

How to apply

  1. Identify the basis of the claim. Decide whether you are asking about benefits on a parent’s retirement record, disability record, or deceased worker’s record. Social Security’s application overview has separate entry points for child applicants and for family, disability, and survivor benefits. If you are uncertain, explain the parent’s status and the child’s situation to SSA.
  2. Contact Social Security. Call 1-800-772-1213 or, for TTY service, 1-800-325-0778, or contact a local office. Social Security says an appointment is not required, although scheduling one may reduce waiting. For a survivor claim, do not assume you can submit the child’s application online; call or visit an office and ask which process applies to your case.
  3. Give the representative the key facts. Be ready to provide identifying details for the worker and applicant, the child’s date of birth and Social Security number, the child’s relationship to the worker, and the child’s citizenship status. Depending on the case, Social Security may also ask about school attendance, disability, guardianship, and other family relationships.
  4. Gather records relevant to the case. Examples include a birth certificate or adoption evidence; evidence of the worker’s marriage to the child’s parent when stepchild status matters; citizenship or lawful-status evidence where applicable; and proof of the worker’s death for a survivor claim. A disabled adult child may need a disability report and medical-release forms.
  5. Apply without waiting for every record. Social Security’s child-benefits application guidance says: “Do not delay applying for benefits because you do not have all the documents. We will help you get them.” Contact the agency promptly, submit what you have, and ask how it will obtain or accept anything missing.

A caregiver generally applies by phone or through a local office. For a survivor claim, Social Security’s June 2026 guidance specifically says the child application cannot be completed online. The online application options shown for other benefit categories should not be taken as confirmation that a child’s survivor application can be filed that way. If the claim is based on retirement or disability, ask the representative which process applies to that particular child and record.

Social Security says an appointment is not required. You can still ask whether scheduling one would be useful for your case; SSA notes that an appointment may reduce waiting. When you call, have the basic information at hand if possible, but do not postpone contacting the agency just because a document or detail is not yet available. The representative can explain what is needed and what to do next.

What information and documents to prepare

Social Security’s SSA-4 guidance asks for information about both the worker and the applicant. Preparing these details before the call or office visit can help the agency identify the claim and tell you which records to provide. You do not need to guess which documents are mandatory before you speak with SSA: the relevant list depends on the type of claim and the child’s relationship and circumstances.

  • Worker and applicant details: identifying information for the parent or deceased worker and the person applying on the child’s behalf.
  • Child’s details: date of birth, Social Security number, relationship to the worker, and citizenship status.
  • Situation-specific facts: school attendance, disability, guardianship, and relevant family relationships, when applicable.
  • Relationship records: a birth certificate, adoption evidence, or—when stepchild status is relevant—evidence of the worker’s marriage to the child’s parent.
  • Survivor records: proof of the worker’s death.
  • Disability records: for a disabled adult child, the disability report and medical-release forms identified by Social Security.

Think of this list as a way to prepare for the conversation, not a package that every family must assemble in full. A family applying on a deceased worker’s record may need evidence of death; a family explaining a stepchild relationship may need marriage evidence; and a disabled adult child’s claim has disability-report and medical-release forms. SSA can tell you which items apply to the claim being made.

Information about school attendance matters when the child is relying on the full-time elementary or secondary student category. Information about disability is relevant when the child is relying on a disability route, and guardianship or other family relationships may be relevant depending on who is involved in the claim. Share the facts accurately, including details that may seem unusual, and ask whether SSA needs a particular form or record to document them.

Citizenship or lawful-status evidence is identified as potentially applicable, not as a universal requirement for every child in every case. Ask SSA what evidence is relevant to the child’s circumstances. Similarly, do not assume that one relationship document will establish every type of relationship. The representative can explain whether the child’s birth certificate, adoption evidence, marriage evidence, or another record is needed.

This is a preparation list, not a guarantee that every item is required in every case. Ask the representative which records apply to the child’s claim and how to submit them. If a document is unavailable, still contact Social Security rather than postponing the application.

How to submit documents

Social Security says it accepts photocopies of W-2 forms, self-employment tax returns, and medical documents. It generally needs original versions of other documents, such as birth certificates, and will return them. Confirm how to provide each specific record with the representative handling the claim; do not assume that a photocopy is acceptable for every document.

The distinction matters when deciding what to send. The stated photocopy rule covers W-2s, self-employment tax returns, and medical documents; the general instruction for other records is to provide originals. Since the rule varies by document type, ask SSA before submitting a particular item if you are unsure whether it must be an original. The agency says it will return originals such as birth certificates, but confirm the procedure for the record you are providing.

If you do not yet have a record, tell SSA what is missing and ask what to do next. The agency says it will help obtain documents, so an incomplete file is not a reason to delay getting in touch. Keep track of which records you have, which are outstanding, and any instructions SSA gives you about sending them. The agency—not a general checklist—can confirm what is still needed for the individual claim.

Why timing matters for a survivor claim

After a parent’s death, contact Social Security as soon as possible. The date the family contacts the agency can affect when survivor benefits begin. You do not need to wait until every supporting record is assembled before making that contact. Tell the representative that the child may have a survivor claim and ask how to proceed and what to provide.

Timing is one reason not to wait until every family record is in hand. A missing death record or relationship document can be discussed with SSA after initial contact; the agency’s instruction is not to delay an application because documents are unavailable. Contacting SSA promptly is especially important for a survivor claim because the date of contact can affect when benefits begin. This does not guarantee a particular start date or outcome, so ask the representative how the timing applies to the child’s claim.

For a child’s survivor application, the filing channel is also important: SSA’s June 2026 guidance says the application cannot be completed online. Call the agency or visit a local office rather than relying on an online form. If you are caring for the child and are unsure whether you are the right person to make the contact, explain your role and ask the representative how the application should proceed.

Before you contact Social Security

  • Identify whether the claim concerns a parent’s retirement, disability, or death.
  • Write down the child’s date of birth, Social Security number, and relationship to the worker.
  • Note any school attendance, disability, guardianship, or family-relationship details that may apply.
  • Collect available records, but do not postpone contacting SSA because something is missing.
  • For a survivor claim, call or visit an office rather than relying on an online application.
  • Ask the representative how to submit each document and whether an appointment would be useful.

During the call or office contact, make sure you understand the next step: which claim process SSA is using, which records it wants, how to submit each record, and whether the child’s school or disability circumstances call for additional information. If the representative says a document is missing, ask whether SSA can help obtain it and whether you should send another record in the meantime. If the child is a student, ask about the attendance certification notice; if a disability claim is relevant, ask about the disability report and medical-release forms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no need to purchase a product or use a commercial service to apply. The application is a public-agency process, and Social Security’s own contact channels and instructions are the practical starting point. Avoid relying on an unrelated paid tool or assuming that a general online form replaces direct guidance for the child’s claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for Social Security benefits for my child?

First identify whether the claim is based on a parent’s retirement benefits, disability benefits, or death. Then call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact a local office. Be ready to explain the child’s age, relationship to the worker, and any relevant school, disability, or guardianship details. Ask SSA which process and records apply.

What documents do I need to apply for child benefits?

The documents depend on the claim and the child’s circumstances. SSA may ask for identifying information, the child’s birth certificate or adoption evidence, marriage evidence when stepchild status matters, citizenship or lawful-status evidence where applicable, proof of death for a survivor claim, or disability forms for a disabled adult child. Ask the representative which records apply. SSA says not to delay applying because a document is missing; it can help obtain records.

Can I apply online for Social Security survivor benefits for my child?

No. Social Security’s June 2026 guidance says a child’s survivor application cannot be completed online. Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact a local office, and do so promptly because the date the family contacts SSA can affect when survivor benefits begin.

Does a child automatically qualify because a parent receives retirement or disability benefits?

No automatic approval is established by the parent’s benefit status alone. Eligibility depends on the worker’s earnings record and the child’s circumstances. Contact SSA and ask the agency to assess the individual record and claim.

What if I do not have all the records yet?

Contact Social Security anyway. Its child-benefits application guidance says not to delay applying because documents are unavailable and says SSA will help obtain them. Tell the representative what is missing and ask how to proceed.

The Bottom Line

To apply for benefits for a dependent child, identify the parent’s record and whether the claim involves retirement, disability, or death, then contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or a local office. Prepare the child’s identifying, relationship, school, and disability details as relevant, but do not wait for every document. For a child’s survivor claim, call or visit an office rather than applying online, and contact SSA promptly.
