QuickBooks Desktop does not have one universal “Reset Registration” command. The right fix depends on whether you need to reactivate the software, replace a license number, repair corrupted entitlement data, or rebuild a damaged registration file. Start with the least destructive option: Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop.
These instructions apply primarily to QuickBooks Desktop for Windows and Mac—not QuickBooks Online, which does not use the same local registration files.

Identify the registration problem first

Before resetting registration
- Close QuickBooks Desktop.
- Back up your company file. Registration files are separate from your company data, but a backup is prudent before changing the installation.
- Confirm the exact QuickBooks edition and year.
- Locate the matching license number and product number. You may find them in your purchase email, original packaging, or the Customer Account Maintenance Portal.
- Sign in with the Intuit account associated with the product. A different email address can make a valid license appear missing.
Do not delete, rename, or edit your .QBW company file.

- Open QuickBooks Desktop.
- Select Help.
- Choose Activate QuickBooks Desktop. Some releases show Activate QuickBooks.
- Sign in with the correct Intuit account or enter the requested license information.
- Complete the verification prompts.
Intuit’s activation instructions are available in its QuickBooks Desktop activation guide. Registration is complete when QuickBooks opens without the activation prompt and shows the correct product information.
Repair Windows registration errors with QuickBooks Tool Hub
For Error 3371, “QuickBooks is not registered,” or corrupted license-validation data, use Intuit’s official QuickBooks Tool Hub rather than an unofficial registration utility.
- Close QuickBooks Desktop.
- Download and install Tool Hub from Intuit.
- Open Tool Hub and select Installation Issues.
- Select 3371 Error Fix, then select OK.
- Open QuickBooks and your company file.
- Register again when prompted.
Intuit support material viewed in 2026 listed Tool Hub version 1.6.0.8, but versions change. Check Intuit’s page for the current download. Intuit recommends Windows 11, 64-bit, for the best Tool Hub experience.

Reset the local entitlement file in Windows
QuickBooks stores local license and entitlement information in EntitlementDataStore.ecml. Use this procedure after Tool Hub or when Intuit’s error-specific instructions direct you to refresh the file.
- Close QuickBooks Desktop.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
C:ProgramDataIntuitEntitlement Clientv8and press Enter. If that folder is unavailable, tryC:ProgramDataIntuitEntitlement Clientv6. - Find
EntitlementDataStore.ecml. - Rename it to
EntitlementDataStore.ecml.OLD. Renaming creates a reversible backup. - Open QuickBooks and the company file, then register again.
For certain Error 3371 and subscription-lapsed cases, Intuit’s instructions call for deleting the file so QuickBooks can rebuild it. Deletion is less reversible, so confirm your license and product numbers first. See Intuit’s guidance for subscription-lapsed errors and license synchronization errors.
Important: If QuickBooks Point of Sale is installed, it may use the same entitlement file and may need to be registered again.
Change only the QuickBooks license number
If the license number changed but the installed edition and product are correct, you generally do not need to reinstall Windows QuickBooks:

- Open QuickBooks.
- Select Help → Manage My License → Change My License Number.
- Enter the new license number.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Reopen QuickBooks and activate it if prompted.
This is different from changing the product number. Follow Intuit’s license and product-number guidance.
What to do about an incorrect product number
The product number identifies the edition and product, while the license number identifies your specific license. They must match. For most QuickBooks Pro, Premier, or Enterprise installations on five or fewer computers, Intuit recommends uninstalling QuickBooks and reinstalling the correct edition and product rather than manually editing registration files.
Manual product-code editing is mainly an advanced Enterprise deployment procedure for installations on more than five computers. A mistake can prevent QuickBooks from opening, so it should be handled by an experienced administrator.
Re-create qbregistration.dat only when necessary
This is an advanced Windows repair for a missing or corrupted registration file, especially when QuickBooks cannot open. Intuit states that recreating this file does not affect the company file, but incorrect entries can stop QuickBooks from launching.

- Close QuickBooks.
- Go to
C:ProgramDataCommon FilesIntuitQuickBooks.ProgramDatamay be hidden. - If
qbregistration.datexists, rename it toqbregistration.old. - Use Intuit’s official qbregistration.dat guide to create the required file structure.
- Enter the exact QuickBooks version, edition, product number, and license number.
- Save the file as
qbregistration.dat, select All Files as the file type, and save it in the Intuit folder. - Start QuickBooks and activate it.
The cited Intuit guide maps QuickBooks Desktop 2020 through 2023 to versions 30.0 through 33.0. Do not infer version mappings for newer releases. If multiple Desktop versions are installed, the file may require a separate registration section for each version.
Reset registration on QuickBooks Desktop for Mac
Do not apply the Windows Tool Hub or Windows entitlement-file instructions to Mac. Use deauthorization instead:
- Open QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
- From the QuickBooks menu, select Manage My License.
- Select Deauthorize This Computer.
- Confirm Deauthorize and Quit.
- Reopen QuickBooks and complete registration with the correct license details.
If QuickBooks still will not register
- Check the Intuit account: Sign in with the account used to register or purchase the product. The account portal can show registered products, license and product numbers, edition, version, user limits, and service details. If necessary, use Intuit’s account-recovery or account-claim options.
- Check the license pair: A license number from one year or edition cannot reliably activate another product.
- Check the subscription: A lapsed subscription cannot be repaired merely by rebuilding a local registration file.
- Correct Windows date and time: An incorrect system clock can cause validation-code errors.
- Check connectivity and firewall rules: QuickBooks must be able to communicate with Intuit services. Local file repair will not fix blocked internet access.
- Repair or reinstall: A damaged installation may require the Tool Hub repair tools or a clean reinstall.
- Contact Intuit: Use Intuit QuickBooks Support when the product is not listed in your account, the license cannot be verified, registration continues to fail, or you are editing a multi-computer Enterprise deployment.
Will resetting registration delete company data?
Intuit says recreating qbregistration.dat does not affect the QuickBooks company file. The entitlement file and registration file are separate from the accounting data. Nevertheless, back up the company file before repairs, rename files instead of deleting them when possible, and never alter the .QBW file while troubleshooting registration.

Can I reset QuickBooks registration without reinstalling?
Yes. Try Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop, change the license number through Manage My License, or repair entitlement data with Tool Hub. Reinstallation is generally reserved for a wrong product code or a damaged installation.

Does this work for QuickBooks Online?
No. These procedures are for QuickBooks Desktop. QuickBooks Online does not use the same local Windows or Mac registration files.
Is it safe to delete EntitlementDataStore.ecml?
Intuit documents deleting it for certain Error 3371 and subscription-lapsed cases. For general troubleshooting, renaming it to EntitlementDataStore.ecml.OLD is more reversible.
What if I lost my license number?
Check the purchase email, original packaging, or the Customer Account Maintenance Portal. Make sure you are using the Intuit account associated with the product.
