How to Research a New Crypto Token and Spot Common Scams

A token’s branding is easy to copy. Verify its on-chain identity, inspect controls and trading conditions, corroborate claims, and stop when pressure or uncertainty outweighs the evidence.

Research a new crypto token by checking its exact on-chain address, the controls built into its contract, its liquidity and holder distribution, and whether its claims stand up to independent verification. Treat every finding as a clue, not a safety certificate: a familiar logo, explorer badge, audit claim, or favorable scanner result cannot prove a token is safe or legitimate. If key facts are unclear or someone is pressuring you to act, walking away is a sound decision.

Why a token’s name and logo are not enough

Token names, ticker symbols, and logos can be copied. On Ethereum, different token contracts can use the same name and symbol; the contract address distinguishes them on that chain. On Solana, the mint address is the token’s identifying value. Ethereum.org’s guide, “How to identify scam tokens,” warns that “You cannot count on those fields for security.”

Start from the exact contract address or mint, not a search result, social-media post, influencer message, or link sent by a stranger. A scam token may imitate a better-known asset, and a copied brand does not establish a connection to the genuine project.

How to research a new token, step by step

  1. Find and verify the address. Reach the project’s website independently rather than following a promotional link. Compare the address it publishes with the relevant chain explorer and a recognized ecosystem source. Check that the chain is the one you intend to use; the same project name or ticker on another chain does not establish that it is the same asset.
  2. Review what the token contract lets its controllers do. Read available contract code and documentation, and look for permissions that could allow someone to mint more tokens, freeze or restrict transfers, or change important parameters. Which controls exist depends on the chain and token design. Ethereum.org notes that anyone can write a token contract, so familiar-looking information or a history of transfer events does not prove benign behavior: a contract can emit transfer events and specify balances.
  3. Assess liquidity and trading conditions. Where reliable market data is available, check the pool or market where the token trades, whether liquidity appears meaningful, and how much a small trade could move the price. Tiny or absent liquidity can make it difficult to trade at an expected price or sell at all. There is no universal liquidity threshold that establishes safety; liquidity changes, and even a large pool cannot prove that a project is honest.
  4. Look at holder distribution and disclosed insider allocations. If trustworthy chain data is available, review the largest holders, team or deployer balances, and any stated lockups or unlock schedules. Concentrated ownership may affect how a token trades, but holder data can be incomplete or hard to interpret. The official Solana verification guide lists holder distribution and liquidity among risk signals; it does not establish a universal safe percentage.
  5. Check the project’s claims outside its own promotion. Look for a product or use case you can examine, people with histories you can verify, and milestones that can be checked through independent sources. Confirm a claimed partnership with the named partner. For an audit, check the report’s date, scope, and the exact contract and version it covers; an audit claim by itself does not establish that the token is safe.
  6. Decide whether the remaining uncertainty is acceptable to you. If you cannot verify the asset’s identity, understand material controls, or corroborate important claims, do not treat missing information as evidence in the project’s favor. A no-buy decision is reasonable when material facts remain opaque.

What verification badges, scanners, and audits can—and cannot—tell you

An explorer badge can help distinguish a recognized token identity from an imitation, but it is not a recommendation to buy. Solana’s documentation, “How to verify a token and make it appear in Solana Explorer,” says: “Verification is not an endorsement of a project, and it is not a guarantee of a token’s value, safety, or legitimacy.” Automated checks can surface signals such as mint or freeze authority, liquidity, and holder distribution, but a result is only as useful as the data and checks behind it, and token conditions can change.

Likewise, an audit logo or claim is not a substitute for reading what was actually examined. A report applies to its stated scope and version; it does not automatically cover later changes or every risk to a buyer. A token’s listing on an exchange or appearance in an explorer also does not establish that its promoters’ claims are true.

Do not treat proof-of-reserves as equivalent to a financial statement audit. The SEC’s 2023 investor bulletin explains that proof-of-reserves reports lack important protections provided by financial statement audits. Such a report therefore cannot, by itself, prove that a token or platform is safe.

Scam tactics to recognize before sending money

Guaranteed returns and manufactured urgency

Claims of high returns with little or no risk are a classic fraud warning sign, as the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy and Division of Enforcement Retail Strategy Task Force noted in its September 1, 2021 Investor Alert, “Digital Asset and ‘Crypto’ Investment Scams – Investor Alert.” Be wary of pressure to buy immediately, hype that substitutes for verifiable facts, fake testimonials, and screenshots of rapid account gains.

Unsolicited investment approaches and impersonation

In an alert dated May 29, 2024, the SEC described fraudsters contacting people through social platforms or unsolicited messages, building trust, and directing them to convincing but fake websites or apps. The same alert warned about AI-related hype and impersonation, including fake government communications. Verify a person, organization, or official-looking message through a contact route you found independently.

Pump-and-dump promotion

Promoters may hype an asset to attract buyers, then sell into the demand, leaving later buyers exposed to a price drop. Excitement and a rising displayed price are not evidence that a token has a sound use case or that you will be able to sell at that price.

Extra fees demanded to withdraw or recover funds

A fake platform may display supposed profits and then block withdrawals or demand additional fees or taxes to release the balance. Do not send more money to unlock claimed profits or recover earlier losses. An additional payment demand is not proof that the displayed funds exist.

When to stop rather than buy

Stop if you encounter any of these conditions:

  • You cannot independently verify the contract address or mint.
  • A seller or promoter pressures you to act immediately.
  • Someone promises guaranteed returns or high returns with little or no risk.
  • A stranger you met online directs you to invest through a site or app.
  • Material project claims cannot be corroborated outside the project’s own promotion.
  • You cannot understand whether the token’s permissions could affect minting, transfers, or trading.
  • You are asked to pay more to withdraw supposed profits or recover money already sent.

These checks reduce some avoidable risks; they cannot certify a token as safe. There is no universal score or single indicator that resolves every token’s risks.

US regulatory claims are not an endorsement

This is a US-specific qualification, not a token-by-token legal conclusion. The SEC’s page dated April 22, 2026 says the agency regulates offers and sales of securities, including crypto assets if they are securities, and that some crypto assets that are not securities may be offered and sold subject to an investment contract. Whether securities laws apply depends on the facts. Investor.gov also cautions that an SEC filing does not necessarily mean that a person or firm is registered with the SEC or that an investment has been approved.

A claim that a token is “SEC registered,” filed, or government-approved should therefore be checked carefully; do not treat the wording as proof of approval or legitimacy.

Keep researching separate from custody

Verifying a token does not secure the wallet used to hold or interact with it. Investor.gov describes a seed phrase as a recovery sequence and explains that self-custody makes the user responsible for private keys. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to a project, support agent, scanner, or anyone who contacts you. A request for those credentials is not part of verifying a token’s identity.
