If your Social Security paper check is lost, stolen, late, or otherwise missing, report it to the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 or contact a local Social Security office. For a missing direct deposit, check with your bank first; if the bank cannot resolve it, contact SSA. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if it is due, but it does not publish a fixed replacement deadline.

What to do first when you didn’t receive your Social Security check

Start by identifying how the payment was supposed to arrive. A paper check and a direct deposit follow different first steps. The SSA’s public FAQ, “How do I report a missing payment?”, directs people with a missing paper payment to SSA and people with a missing electronic payment to their bank or financial institution first.

How you receive the payment First step If it remains missing
Paper check Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or contact a local Social Security office. SSA reviews the case and replaces the payment if it is due.
Direct deposit or another electronic payment Contact your bank or financial institution to check whether the deposit is delayed or pending. If the bank cannot resolve the issue, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or a local office.

For telephone service for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, call TTY 1-800-325-0778. SSA’s service line is generally available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones. Hours can vary by time zone, so check the current SSA contact information if you are calling near opening or closing time.

If you are not sure whether a payment was supposed to arrive by mail or electronically, check the delivery arrangement you currently have and then use the matching first step. A paper check that never arrived is not handled in the same first instance as a direct deposit that has not appeared in an account. Starting with the right organization helps distinguish a mailing or check issue from a bank posting delay.

How to report a lost or stolen paper check

  1. Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, or contact a local Social Security office. If you use TTY, call 1-800-325-0778.
  2. Explain that the paper payment did not arrive or was stolen. SSA will review whether the payment is due.
  3. Follow the agency’s instructions for your case. SSA says it will replace a payment if it is due. Reporting a theft does not mean an immediate replacement is guaranteed.

The public FAQ does not list a separate online form or self-service replacement item for a missing paper check. The replacement process runs through SSA. The instructions apply to U.S. Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments; they do not establish the rules for a private pension or another government benefit.

Whether the check is late, lost in the mail, stolen, or otherwise unavailable, the key first step is the same: report the missing payment to SSA. Do not assume that a suspected theft automatically results in a new check being issued on the spot. SSA reviews the payment and whether it is due, then handles the case according to its status. Its public instruction is: “We will review the case and if the payment is due, we will replace it.”

There is no separate replacement product that you can order or use instead of the agency process. If you have already told your bank or another party about a missing paper check, still contact SSA, because SSA is the agency that reviews whether a Social Security or SSI payment is due. A report to SSA is also appropriate if the check may simply be delayed rather than confirmed stolen.

How to report a missing direct deposit

If you expected an electronic payment and it is not in your account, contact the bank or financial institution that receives it. Ask whether the deposit is pending, delayed, or otherwise visible in its records. A posting delay can explain why an expected payment has not appeared yet.

If the bank cannot locate or resolve the payment, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or a local office. SSA will review the case and replace the payment if it is due. Do not report an electronic deposit as a lost paper check; the first check is with the financial institution.

This order matters because an electronic payment may have reached the financial institution but not yet posted in the account. The bank is the first place to check whether it sees a pending or delayed deposit. If the institution cannot account for the payment, SSA is the next contact for review. Do not assume that a missing entry in online banking by itself proves the benefit was not issued.

How long does a replacement Social Security check take?

SSA does not promise a standard number of days for a replacement in its public missing-payment FAQ. The time can depend on what is known about the original check and how SSA must handle the claim. Do not rely on an assumed delivery date to plan bills; contact SSA for the status of your specific case.

SSA’s internal operating procedures help explain why cases can differ, but they are not a public service-level guarantee. In a typical timely nonreceipt report, SSA’s procedures generally provide a courtesy disbursement before the Treasury Department determines whether the original check was cashed. In certain situations, including uncertainty about whether the payment was received or a history of double-check negotiation, SSA may use a C-Stop and wait for Treasury’s determination. If Treasury records show the original was cashed, further handling may involve a forgery claim. These are internal processes, not steps or timelines every beneficiary should expect.

In practical terms, the status of the first check can affect what happens next. A payment reported as not received may be handled differently from one whose delivery or negotiation is uncertain. SSA’s public FAQ does not say that every case gets a courtesy disbursement, nor does it give a date by which a replacement must arrive. The internal terms above describe agency procedures rather than an option for a recipient to select.

If you need to make plans while your case is being reviewed, ask SSA about the status of your own report rather than relying on a general estimate found elsewhere. No fixed replacement date is given in SSA’s public missing-payment instructions. That limitation is important whether the original item is known to be lost, suspected stolen, or simply has not arrived.

What if other people in your area are also missing checks?

SSA defines a “mass loss” event as checks for an area or ZIP code being undeliverable because they are permanently lost, stolen, or otherwise unavailable. The agency’s response involves coordination with the U.S. Postal Service and Treasury. If neighbors are affected too, tell SSA when you report your own missing payment, but still make an individual report so the agency can review your case.

Several people in the same neighborhood having trouble may be useful context, but it does not substitute for reporting your own nonreceipt. SSA’s mass-loss procedures are agency coordination with the Postal Service and Treasury; beneficiaries should not wait for a neighborhood-wide notice before contacting SSA about their own missing payment.

Reduce the chance of another missed payment

SSA lists electronic payment methods for people moving away from paper checks: direct deposit, enrollment submitted by a participating bank, and Direct Express for people without a bank account. These routes have different requirements; they are not interchangeable, and you should confirm which is available for your circumstances.

Payment method Who it may suit How to enroll or change
Direct deposit Someone with a bank or credit union account who wants the benefit deposited there. SSA says recipients can update direct deposit online through my Social Security. Depending on benefit type, a phone call may be required. A bank may also submit enrollment information if it offers Automated Enrollment.
Bank-submitted Automated Enrollment Someone whose financial institution offers the service and can submit the enrollment information. Ask the bank whether it supports Automated Enrollment and how to submit the change through it.
Direct Express Someone who does not have a bank account and can use the prepaid debit card option. SSA identifies Direct Express as an option for people without a bank account. Confirm current enrollment instructions with SSA or the program.

Direct deposit is an option for someone who has an account and wants the payment sent there. The bank-submitted route is not a different type of benefit: it is a way a financial institution may transmit enrollment information, if that institution offers Automated Enrollment. Ask your bank whether it participates before relying on this route. SSA says direct-deposit changes can also be made online, though the available method can depend on the type of benefit.

Direct Express is the option SSA identifies for people who do not have a bank account. It is a prepaid debit card route, not a paper-check replacement that SSA sends automatically after one check goes missing. If you are considering it, confirm the current enrollment instructions with SSA or the Direct Express program. The decision among these routes depends on whether you have an account, whether your bank supports the enrollment service, and which change process SSA makes available for your benefit.

SSA’s June 2, 2026 guidance says federal law and Executive Order 14247 require federal benefits to be paid electronically as of September 30, 2025, and that SSA planned to complete the transition for all beneficiaries during 2026. Because that stated completion year is still in progress, do not assume the transition is complete in every case; check with SSA about your payment and options.

The same SSA guidance says people who cannot transition because of circumstances such as mental health concerns or living remotely without access to financial institutions may request an exception waiver through Treasury. Those examples describe possible challenges, not a guarantee that a waiver will be approved. Treasury’s listed number is 1-877-874-6347; confirm current conditions and arrangements directly, since SSA’s announced transition completion year is still underway.

SSA says paper checks are 16 times more likely than electronic payments to be lost, stolen, altered, or returned as undeliverable. It also reports, attributing the figure to Treasury, an average printing cost of $3.07 per check and says printing a check costs approximately 20 times more than automated payments. These are SSA’s 2026 figures and explain the agency’s move toward electronic delivery; they do not determine the timing of an individual replacement claim.

Those figures are context for the delivery transition, not a reason to assume an electronic option will suit everyone. The practical choice still turns on access to a bank account, whether a bank offers Automated Enrollment, the available steps for changing enrollment, and whether someone may need to ask Treasury about a waiver. SSA, Treasury, banks, and Direct Express are the relevant channels for these options; the missing check itself is resolved through SSA’s review process.

Changing direct deposit or mailing details

If you are changing from paper checks to direct deposit, SSA says the online my Social Security account is the simplest way to make the change. Identity verification rules can affect which route you can use:

  • SSA’s April 2025 guidance says a person can change direct deposit online through a my Social Security account.
  • Since April 28, 2025, a person can also call SSA with a one-time code generated after signing in to or creating a my Social Security account.
  • If neither option is available, SSA says an office visit or an arrangement through the bank may be needed.
  • Paper-check recipients must visit a Social Security office before changing their mailing address, according to the same guidance.

Depending on the type of benefit, an online direct-deposit change may not be available and you may need to call. If you are unsure whether a bank change, benefit type, or identity-verification issue affects your case, ask SSA before relying on a change to take effect.

The one-time code route is tied to signing in to or creating a my Social Security account; it is not described as a general code someone can request without account access. SSA’s guidance also distinguishes changing bank details from changing a mailing address. In particular, people still receiving paper checks must visit an office to change the mailing address. Do not assume that changing a bank account or updating another account profile will also update SSA’s records.

If your financial institution can submit enrollment information, ask it about Automated Enrollment as a possible way to make a direct-deposit change. SSA’s guidance also says an office visit may be needed when online or phone identity verification is not workable. The specific route depends on your benefit type and ability to complete identity verification, so confirm what applies before expecting a new payment arrangement to take effect.

Can you get a waiver if you cannot switch to electronic payments?

SSA’s June 2026 page says some people who cannot transition to electronic payments may request an exception waiver through Treasury. It gives examples such as mental health concerns or living remotely without access to financial institutions and lists Treasury’s phone number as 1-877-874-6347. The examples do not establish that every person with a similar circumstance will qualify. Contact Treasury to confirm the current waiver conditions and process, since the transition is ongoing.

A waiver is a separate issue from reporting one missing check. If a paper payment is missing, report it to SSA. If your concern is that you cannot move to electronic delivery, ask Treasury about the exception process and current eligibility conditions. SSA’s examples are reasons someone might face difficulty, not a complete eligibility list or an assurance of approval.

Key points before you call

  • For a missing paper check, report it to SSA; for a missing electronic deposit, contact the bank first.
  • SSA reviews whether a payment is due and says it will replace it if due. It does not publish a fixed replacement timeline.
  • Cases can involve different internal handling depending on whether the original check was received or cashed. Follow SSA’s instructions for your own claim.
  • If paper mail is a continuing risk, ask about an electronic payment method that fits your banking situation and verify the current transition or waiver rules with SSA or Treasury.

For a paper check, SSA is the first contact even if you suspect theft or think other checks in your area are missing. For an electronic payment, the bank or financial institution is the first contact; SSA is next if it cannot resolve the issue. In either case, the agency’s public guidance is conditional: it reviews the case and replaces a payment if it is due, without promising a universal processing time.
