Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen oil prices rise, you cannot control the price at the pump, but you can limit how many gallons you use and avoid paying more than necessary locally. For U.S. drivers, the most practical steps are smoother driving, fewer or combined trips, correct vehicle maintenance, and careful price comparisons. Savings depend on your vehicle and driving patterns, so treat published percentages as estimates—not guarantees.
Why do gas prices rise when oil prices go up?
Crude oil is a major influence on U.S. gasoline prices, but it is not the only one. The Energy Information Administration says retail prices are mainly affected by crude oil costs and the gasoline supply available relative to demand. Refinery or pipeline disruptions, inventories, seasonal demand, and seasonal fuel specifications can also affect what drivers pay. The EIA’s explanation of gasoline prices notes that “Gasoline prices generally follow crude oil prices.”
That relationship is not a reliable way to predict the price at your local station: global oil supply and demand, as well as local gasoline availability, can change. The EIA’s 2024 analysis found that the average U.S. retail price for regular gasoline in August was about 40 cents per gallon higher than in January, on average over 2004–2023. That is a historical seasonal pattern, not a forecast or a current price difference. EIA
How can I save money on gas when prices go up?
The most direct way to reduce fuel spending is to use fewer gallons. Change the driving you can control first; then consider whether a lower-priced station is worth a detour.

Drive smoothly and avoid unnecessary idling
Rapid acceleration and hard braking waste fuel. Accelerate gradually, leave room to slow down smoothly, and avoid letting the engine idle when you can safely turn it off. On suitable highway routes, cruise control can help maintain a steady speed. The benefit varies with the vehicle, road, traffic, and driving style, so no single savings figure applies to everyone. FuelEconomy.gov’s efficient-driving guidance
Combine errands and cut trips where practical
Plan errands into one outing instead of making repeated cold starts and separate journeys. When it fits your circumstances, carpooling, transit, walking, biking, or working remotely can replace some driving. The EPA estimates that leaving a car at home two days a week can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 3,000 pounds per year; that is an emissions estimate, not a universal estimate of fuel-cost savings. EPA tips for driving more efficiently
Remove cargo you do not need
Extra weight makes a vehicle use more fuel. Take out unneeded items you regularly carry, while keeping safety equipment and anything necessary for your trip. The practical target is clutter or cargo that does not need to be in the vehicle—not equipment that makes driving safer.
Choose a suitable speed
Does driving slower really save gas? Avoiding excessive speed can help, but the right speed depends on road conditions, posted limits, traffic, and vehicle. Drive at a legal, safe speed rather than trying to hit a universal fuel-economy target. FuelEconomy.gov

How can maintenance help reduce fuel use?
Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and specifications instead of paying for a repair or fluid based on a generic fuel-saving promise. DOE’s 2022 guidance reports that properly maintained vehicles have 4% better gas mileage on average. That average does not mean every service or repair will improve every car’s mileage by 4%. FuelEconomy.gov’s vehicle-maintenance guidance
Check tire pressure while the tires are cold
Use the pressure listed on the driver-side doorjamb, in the owner’s manual, or at another location specified by the manufacturer. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the target. DOE’s 2021 consumer guide estimates that keeping tires properly inflated improves fuel economy by 0.6% on average, and by up to 3% in some cases; actual results vary by vehicle and tire condition. DOE consumer guidance via FuelEconomy.gov
Use the specified oil and fuel grade
Check your owner’s manual for the recommended motor oil and fuel grade. A different grade or an oil marketed as a fuel-saving upgrade is not automatically right for your car. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and schedule; they are specific to the vehicle.
Should I drive farther to get cheaper gas?
Not necessarily. A lower price per gallon can be outweighed by the fuel used to reach the station, especially if the detour is long or the difference is small. Compare the posted prices, your vehicle’s fuel economy, the round-trip detour distance, and whether you were already going that way. Price-comparison apps and websites can help identify nearby options, according to the FTC, but their prices and coverage may vary. FTC guidance on saving gas and fuel efficiency

There is no universal break-even distance: the result depends on the price difference, detour, and vehicle. A lower-priced station on a planned route is easier to justify than a special trip made solely for a discount.

Be skeptical of products promising large, effortless fuel savings. In a 2004 consumer alert, the FTC described EPA testing of more than 100 purported gas-saving devices: very few provided a benefit, and some could cause engine damage or increased emissions. This is historical evidence reported in that alert, not a current test of every product now sold. FTC consumer alert
EPA registration of a fuel additive does not establish that claims about improved fuel economy are valid. Do not treat registration as proof that an additive or device will lower your costs. EPA fuel-additive registration information
Would a more fuel-efficient vehicle lower my costs?
If you are already considering a vehicle change, compare official fuel-economy labels or vehicle estimates on FuelEconomy.gov using your expected annual mileage, city/highway mix, and local fuel prices. Use the same assumptions for each vehicle so the fuel-cost comparison is meaningful. FuelEconomy.gov vehicle comparison tool

A vehicle’s estimated fuel savings are only one part of its cost. Compare them separately with the purchase price, financing, insurance, and maintenance costs before deciding whether replacing a functioning vehicle makes financial sense.
A practical order of operations
-
For your next drives, combine errands, remove unnecessary cargo, and avoid abrupt acceleration, hard braking, and unnecessary idling.
-
Check cold tire pressure against the vehicle placard or manual, then keep up with the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and specified oil and fuel grade.
-
Compare nearby station prices and account for the fuel and distance required for any detour.
