To use less electricity during peak-demand hours, first find the peak period and pricing rules set by your utility, then move flexible tasks such as laundry, dishwashing and EV charging to a better time. You can also make modest adjustments to heating, cooling and water heating, or check whether your utility offers a demand-response program. Shifting use can lower peak-hour consumption without reducing the total electricity you use, and any bill savings depend on your tariff and usage.
Find out when your peak hours actually are
There is no reliable universal rule that peak hours are always in the morning or evening. Your utility may set fixed time-of-use (TOU) periods, change them by season, use prices that vary by hour, or notify customers about occasional critical-peak events. A notified event may have different hours or terms from your ordinary rate schedule.

Check your latest bill, utility account, rate sheet and program alerts. Look for the hours and days that count as peak, the applicable seasons, and whether the price changes on a fixed schedule or in response to day-ahead or real-time prices. The U.S. Department of Energy describes these as distinct time-variable pricing approaches in its Demand Response and Time-Variable Pricing Programs guidance.

Also identify which charges your plan includes. An energy charge is based on electricity used, typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh); a demand charge is based on the highest power draw, measured in kilowatts (kW), during a defined interval; and a fixed charge generally does not change with consumption. The DOE explains these distinctions in Evaluating Your Utility Rate Options. A schedule that reduces peak kWh may not address a demand charge unless it also lowers the relevant maximum kW.

Shift flexible appliance use outside the peak
Once you know the applicable hours and price signal, move tasks you can comfortably defer. Common candidates include:
- Laundry and dishwashing: Run loads before or after the peak, or use a delay-start setting if the appliance supports it.
- Electric-vehicle charging: Schedule charging outside peak hours when your driving needs and charger settings allow.
- Other deferrable equipment: Review pool pumps, dehumidifiers or other discretionary devices if you use them and can safely change their schedule.
These steps shift electricity use in time; they do not necessarily reduce the kWh used by the task. UK government smart-meter guidance gives changing washing and EV-charging times, and delaying washing-machine or dishwasher starts, as examples of flexibility: Smart meters: unlocking the future. The size of the benefit depends on your appliance, household routine and tariff, so do not assume every device is a significant load for every home.

Adjust heating, cooling and water heating safely
Heating, air conditioning and water heating are common loads that utilities may target in demand-response programs. If it suits your household, consider a modest adjustment during the actual peak period—for example, pre-cooling or pre-heating within safe, comfortable limits, or delaying a water-heating cycle when the system allows. The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes utility programs that can manage or encourage changes to heating and cooling equipment in Energy efficiency and conservation; the Bonneville Power Administration lists heating, cooling and water heaters among possible controllable loads in its Demand Response Overview.
There is no single thermostat setting that is appropriate for every home. Keep changes within health, comfort, equipment and plumbing requirements, and do not compromise food preservation or other essential needs. If your utility offers direct control of eligible equipment, check what it can adjust, when it can do so, and the enrollment terms before opting in.

Choose manual scheduling or automation that fits
You do not need a smart device to shift use: changing a routine or using an appliance’s built-in timer may be enough. Smart meters, programmable thermostats, connected appliances and utility controls can make scheduling easier, but compatibility, eligibility and data terms vary. Before enrolling in a service that shares usage data or permits load control, review the consent and control terms.
For example, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s July 2026 Clean flexibility roadmap defines consumer-led flexibility as voluntary shifting of electricity use away from peak periods or increasing demand when supply is more abundant, cheaper and cleaner. That is one policy context, not a description of every utility program or tariff.

A smart thermostat is an optional way to schedule heating or cooling, not a requirement. Verify that it works with your HVAC equipment and that any utility program you are considering accepts it; a device alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee savings.
Check the bill impact before changing rates
Moving use can reduce charges only if it matches the structure of your rate. A TOU plan may charge less off-peak but more during peak hours. Dynamic plans can expose customers to changing prices, while demand charges depend on maximum kW rather than total kWh. Fixed charges generally remain regardless of when or how much electricity you use.

Compare the full schedule—not just the advertised off-peak price—with your own usage, ideally using interval data from your utility. Consider peak and off-peak hours, seasonal changes, event-based prices, demand and fixed charges where applicable, and whether you can shift enough load without disrupting your household. Businesses should also ask how their tariff calculates demand and whether any demand-charge look-back applies. The DOE’s rate-options guidance recommends evaluating charges alongside usage information.
There is no single current household savings figure that applies to generic peak-hour advice. Your result depends on your local tariff, usage pattern and ability to move consumption; calculate it against your own rate rather than assuming a percentage reduction.
Look for local demand-response programs and incentives
Ask your utility whether it offers TOU rates, peak-event alerts, demand-response enrollment, rebates or bill credits, and confirm the current eligibility and terms. Some programs ask customers to reduce use during specified events; others may remotely control enrolled equipment. Participation, compensation and the loads involved vary by provider and customer class. The EIA and DOE describe these program types, but neither establishes a universal residential offer.
