To make a diesel generator use less fuel during an outage, reduce the electrical demand it serves: identify essential equipment, turn down or disconnect noncritical loads, and keep operation within the generator’s own rating and instructions. Plan fuel supply and maintain the generator and stored fuel as well; conserving fuel is not useful if the unit or fuel becomes unreliable.
Prioritize the loads that matter
Before an outage, list the circuits and equipment needed to protect people, property, and essential operations. Estimate their electrical demand and decide which loads can be reduced, shifted to another time, or disconnected. The U.S. Department of Energy advises businesses to determine the power needed for vital systems and equipment during an emergency in its utility-disruption preparedness guidance.
During an outage, supply essential loads first. If the outage continues, reassess what is still necessary rather than continuing to power every connected device by default. DOE’s microgrid example says reducing or disconnecting noncritical loads can reduce fuel consumption during an extended outage. It describes a facility microgrid, so it supports the load-management principle, not a guaranteed savings rate for every household or generator.
Choose what to reduce, shift, or disconnect
For each load, weigh the fuel potentially saved against the service lost. Consider whether it can run at a lower setting, operate at a different time, or be shut off without compromising safety or essential needs.

- Clean and Smooth Operation: With only 6% total harmonic distortion, this generator ensures the smooth operation of tools, appliances, and even sensitive electronics, offering peace of mind for your power needs
- Extended Runtime: The XD5000E from Generac features a 12-gallon diesel fuel tank provides an impressive run-time of 32.4 hours at 50% load, minimizing the need for frequent refueling and ensuring uninterrupted power supply for extended periods
- Industrial-Grade Diesel Engine: Equipped with a Yanmar LW Series 435cc air-cooled direct injection diesel engine, this generator is built to withstand heavy-duty use and provide reliable performance even in demanding environments
- Durable and Strong: The 1-1/4-inch steel cradle adds strength and durability to the generator, ensuring it can handle the rigors of the job site or other challenging situations. A dependable power source engineered to keep running when you need it most
- Reduce: Lower demand where the equipment allows it and doing so is safe and consistent with its instructions.
- Shift: Run deferrable equipment at a different time so fewer loads operate simultaneously, if the generator and equipment can safely accommodate the resulting demand.
- Disconnect: Turn off noncritical loads that do not need to run during the outage.
The DOE sources do not provide appliance-by-appliance fuel-use measurements. Actual fuel savings depend on the specific generator and the loads being served, so avoid assuming that switching off a particular appliance will save a fixed number of gallons.
Stay within the generator’s rating and instructions
Check the generator nameplate and operating manual to understand its rated duty and limits. Standby, prime, and continuous ratings describe different operating contexts; guidance for one rating class should not be applied to another. DOE’s diesel-generator material gives rating-specific operating guidance, but it does not establish one load percentage as a universal fuel-saving target. Do not overload the set or change operating practices based on another unit’s rating.

For context, the DOE material describes a standby rating sized for a maximum 80% average load factor and roughly 200 hours per year. Its prime-power guidance recommends that variable load not exceed 70% of the prime rating on average during an operational period of 250 hours. These figures refer to different rating contexts and are not general targets for reducing fuel use. Follow the documentation that applies to your generator.
Plan for fuel delivery, not just tank quantity
Estimate how long essential loads may need power and plan how fuel will be replenished. DOE’s energy-emergency response guidance advises businesses to contact suppliers about emergency arrangements, site access, and whether delivery can be made when normal power is unavailable. Delivery availability depends on local outage conditions, so do not treat a planned delivery as certain unless it has been confirmed.

Maintain the generator and stored fuel
Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and applicable local requirements. DOE’s DOE-STD-3003-2000, a standard for DOE facilities, describes a diesel-fuel quality program that includes periodic testing and removal of water from storage tanks. It also recommends cool fuel storage and keeping the tank full to limit breathing and air exposure. Because that standard dates to 2000 and addresses DOE facilities, apply its practices only with due regard for your tank design, current instructions, and jurisdictional requirements.
The Department of Energy’s Operations and Maintenance Best Practices Guide provides broader operations-and-maintenance context. For outage use, the practical priority is keeping the generator serviced and fuel fit for use, rather than trying to conserve fuel in ways that compromise reliable operation.
