Re:

How to Read Barcodes—and Can You Identify a Product’s Country of Origin?

A UPC or EAN barcode can help identify a product or associated company, but its first digits usually do not reveal where the product was made. Here is how to scan, verify and investigate origin correctly.

Yes, you can read a barcode and often use it to identify a product or the company associated with it. But the first digits of an ordinary UPC or EAN barcode generally do not prove where the product was made. They usually identify the GS1 numbering organization or allocation range that issued the identifier—not the factory, country of manufacture, or country of origin.

For origin, start with the package’s printed country-of-origin statement. Use the barcode as supporting evidence: identify the full GTIN, check its structure, look it up through Verified by GS1, and look for an explicit origin field in compatible advanced GS1 barcodes.

Barcode, GTIN, UPC and EAN: what is the difference?

A barcode is a visual representation of data that an optical scanner or camera can read. In a traditional one-dimensional barcode, the widths and spacing of dark bars and light spaces represent the data. A two-dimensional barcode, such as a QR Code or DataMatrix symbol, stores data in a grid of modules.

In retail, the data is often a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). A GTIN identifies a trade item—a product or product variation—not usually its manufacturing location. The visible bars are simply the machine-readable form of the number printed underneath.

Term Meaning
Barcode The printed symbol scanned by a reader.
GTIN The numeric product identifier represented by a compatible barcode.
UPC-A A commonly used 12-digit retail barcode, especially in North American commerce.
EAN-13 A 13-digit retail barcode widely used internationally.
EAN-8 A shorter retail format for small packages.
UPC-E A compressed form of certain UPC numbers.
GTIN-14 A 14-digit identifier used in broader distribution and logistics contexts.

Not every barcode is a retail GTIN. QR Codes, DataMatrix symbols, GS1-128 labels, GS1 DataBar symbols, ITF-14 labels and proprietary retailer codes can carry different kinds of information, including serial numbers, lot numbers, expiry dates, URLs or logistics data.

GS1 explains the relationship between these terms in its guide to GTINs, barcodes, EANs and UPCs.

How to read the number under a barcode

The most reliable way to read a typical retail barcode is to read the human-readable digits printed beneath it. You do not normally need to interpret every bar by eye. A scanner decodes the pattern and returns the number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard retail GTIN, the number generally consists of:

  • a GS1 company prefix or other allocated prefix;
  • an item reference assigned within the company’s numbering structure; and
  • a final check digit.

The boundary between the company prefix and item reference is not necessarily visible from the printed number. Company prefixes can have different lengths, so do not assume that a fixed block—such as the first five or six digits—always identifies the same type of information.

What you see in a UPC-A or EAN-13 symbol

A conventional retail symbol normally includes:

  • a blank quiet zone at each side;
  • start, center and end guard patterns;
  • groups of bars and spaces encoding the digits; and
  • the human-readable number printed below.

The quiet zone matters because it gives the scanner a clean boundary around the symbol. Cropping, glare, folds, low contrast or damage can prevent a scan even when the number itself is valid.

How to scan a barcode with a phone

  1. Open the phone’s camera or a barcode-scanning application.
  2. Hold the phone steadily over the complete symbol.
  3. Keep the barcode in focus and avoid reflections or harsh glare.
  4. Include the surrounding quiet zone in the frame.
  5. Wait for the scan result.
  6. Compare the returned number with the printed digits.
  7. Use the result as a lookup aid, not as automatic proof of manufacturing origin.

Phone behavior varies by device, operating system, application and barcode type. Many phones recognize QR Codes natively, while some linear UPC or EAN symbols require a dedicated app or online service. A phone camera cannot guarantee that every barcode will scan, and scanning a symbol does not guarantee that a useful product record exists in the app’s database.

How to check a barcode’s final digit

The last digit of a standard UPC-A or EAN-13 is a check digit. It helps detect typing, printing or scanning errors. It does not prove that a product is genuine, identify its factory or establish its country of origin.

UPC-A example

For a UPC-A number, use the first 11 digits. Take a number such as 036000291452; its first 11 digits are 03600029145.

  1. Add positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11: 0 + 6 + 0 + 2 + 1 + 4 = 13.
  2. Multiply that result by 3: 13 × 3 = 39.
  3. Add positions 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10: 3 + 0 + 0 + 9 + 5 = 17.
  4. Add the totals: 39 + 17 = 56.
  5. The number needed to reach the next multiple of 10 is 4, so the check digit is 4.

The formula is:

check digit = (10 - (total mod 10)) mod 10

EAN-13 example

For EAN-13, use the first 12 digits. Consider 4006381333931.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Add the digits in odd-numbered positions: 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 9 = 20.
  2. Add three times the digits in even-numbered positions: (0 + 6 + 8 + 3 + 3 + 3) × 3 = 69.
  3. Add the totals: 20 + 69 = 89.
  4. The number needed to reach the next multiple of 10 is 1, so the final check digit is 1.

The equivalent formula is:

check digit = (10 - (weighted total mod 10)) mod 10

These calculations apply to standard UPC-A and EAN-13 numbering. Do not assume that another barcode format or application-specific data structure uses the same method.

Do the first barcode digits show the country where a product was made?

Myth: “The first three digits of an EAN tell you the country of origin.”

Fact: The opening digits generally indicate the GS1 Member Organisation or numbering range associated with allocation of the identifier. They do not reliably identify where the item was manufactured, grown, assembled, packaged or shipped.

A company may obtain its GS1 prefix in one country and manufacture products in another. A multinational brand may use one company prefix for goods made by contract manufacturers in several countries. Conversely, a product made in one country may carry a GTIN allocated to a company registered or headquartered elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why online “barcode country code” charts can be misleading. At most, the prefix may provide a clue about where the company obtained its numbering registration. It is not a manufacturing-country code.

See GS1’s direct explanation of why a GS1 prefix does not show country of origin.

Can a barcode contain actual country-of-origin data?

Sometimes—but this is different from interpreting the first digits of a UPC or EAN.

Some compatible GS1 data structures can use Application Identifier (AI) 422 to represent a trade item’s country of origin with a three-digit numeric ISO country code. Conceptually, a label might contain data such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
(01) GTIN (422) ISO country code

The parentheses are human-readable application-identifier notation; they are not necessarily encoded as literal characters in the symbol. The exact appearance depends on the barcode structure and label.

AI 422 may be used in compatible implementations such as certain GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 DataBar and GS1 QR Code systems. It is not part of the ordinary UPC-A or EAN-13 retail symbol. A plain EAN-13 does not become an origin record merely because its first digits resemble a country-code chart.

The relevant supplier or manufacturer is responsible for assigning the origin data, and “country of origin” can have different meanings under customs, food, agricultural, meat-labeling and other regulatory regimes. A barcode field should therefore be interpreted in the context of the applicable rules. The GS1 data-model guidance discusses distinctions among origin-related attributes.

How to look up a barcode with Verified by GS1

Verified by GS1 is the most authoritative general-purpose lookup in this workflow because it is operated by GS1 rather than relying solely on a retailer or crowdsourced catalogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the complete GTIN printed beneath the barcode.
  2. Enter it into Verified by GS1.
  3. Review whether the number is structurally valid and issued within the GS1 system.
  4. Check the associated company, organization or other entity.
  5. Review any product information returned.
  6. Compare the result with the brand, package, importer and label.
  7. Treat an empty or mismatched result as a warning requiring investigation—not conclusive proof that the item is counterfeit.

The lookup may help answer:

  • Is the number properly structured?
  • Has it been issued within the GS1 system?
  • Which company or entity is licensed for it?
  • Does available product information match the package?

According to GS1 support information current as of August 16, 2026, the public service allows up to 30 queries per day. Advanced batch lookup and API access are available through GS1 Member Organisations. Returned information depends on what has been registered and made available; the service should not be treated as a complete list of factories or a guaranteed sourcing history.

Why a barcode lookup may fail

A failed lookup does not have one universal meaning. Possible explanations include:

  • the number was typed incorrectly;
  • the check digit is wrong;
  • the symbol is blurred, damaged, reflective or truncated;
  • the code is not a GS1 barcode;
  • the product uses a retailer-specific internal code;
  • the GTIN is valid but absent from the public database;
  • the company has not uploaded detailed product information;
  • the database contains company information but no factory information;
  • the product was relabeled for another market;
  • the barcode was reused or printed incorrectly; or
  • the symbol is a coupon, book identifier, pharmaceutical code, logistics code or another specialized identifier.

Product descriptions and prices are generally stored in databases associated with an identifier, not inside an ordinary barcode itself. Variable-measure products and coupons can involve different data arrangements. GS1 explains this distinction in its guidance on whether price and description are included in a barcode.

A valid barcode does not prove authenticity

Barcode validity and product authenticity are separate questions. A valid GTIN may show that a number has a valid structure or is associated with a registered company. It does not prove that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the item is genuine;
  • the package was produced by the company returned in the lookup;
  • the product was made in the country associated with the GS1 prefix;
  • the current contents match the registered product;
  • the product is legally authorized for sale; or
  • the supply chain was not diverted, substituted or tampered with.

A counterfeit can copy the barcode from a legitimate product and scan successfully. A legitimate product can also have incomplete, outdated or mismatched public data. For a suspected counterfeit, compare packaging and batch details, contact the brand or importer, and use the relevant regulator or marketplace reporting process.

What evidence is stronger for identifying a product’s origin?

If the question is “Where was this made?”, use evidence in roughly this order:

  1. Printed origin statement: Look for “Made in,” “Product of,” “Grown in” or an equivalent statement on the package. Interpret it under the rules applicable to that product and market.
  2. Manufacturer, importer or distributor information: Use the name and address on the label to contact the responsible business or compare it with official documentation.
  3. Official manufacturer information: An official product page or statement that matches the exact product, variant and packaging is stronger than an unverified listing.
  4. Regulatory, customs or supply-chain records: These can be important where the question has legal, financial or compliance consequences.
  5. Explicit barcode origin data: A compatible GS1 symbol containing AI 422 may provide an encoded origin field, subject to the applicable definition and data quality.
  6. GTIN lookup: Verified by GS1 can support identification of the licensed company or product, but it normally does not establish the manufacturing facility.

Weaker evidence includes the first digits of a UPC or EAN, a generic scanning app’s country label, a marketplace listing without sourcing documentation, and social-media barcode charts.

If you want to avoid products from a particular country

Do not filter products solely by UPC or EAN prefix. That method can fail because companies register identifiers in different countries, products may be made under contract, components can originate in several countries, and assembly, packaging and substantial transformation can occur in different places.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the actual label and, when the purchase matters, ask the manufacturer or importer for clarification. Product categories can also have specialized origin rules, so a barcode cannot replace the applicable labeling or customs standard.

Practical checklist

  • Read the full human-readable number.
  • Identify whether the symbol is UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-E, a 2D code or another format.
  • Check the final digit if it is a standard UPC-A or EAN-13.
  • Look up the GTIN in Verified by GS1.
  • Compare the returned company or product with the packaging.
  • Do not infer manufacturing country from the first digits.
  • Look for a printed origin statement.
  • If the barcode is an extended GS1 symbol, check for explicit application identifiers such as AI 422.
  • For legal, customs, safety or high-value questions, obtain documentation from the manufacturer, importer or relevant authority.
