Fundamental announced $255 million in total funding on February 5, 2026, including a $225 million Series A for NEXUS, a “large tabular model” designed to make predictions from enterprise data. The company is positioning NEXUS as an alternative to workflows built primarily around large language models (LLMs)—not because LLMs cannot process tables, but because enormous structured datasets and predictive tasks such as fraud detection, demand forecasting, and maintenance planning require a different approach.

The funding demonstrates substantial investor and commercial interest. It does not, by itself, prove that NEXUS consistently outperforms established machine-learning methods in production.

The distinction matters: $255 million is the company’s disclosed total funding, while $225 million is the Series A. The available coverage does not provide a complete chronology of separately disclosed seed or angel rounds.

Reports also disagree about the company’s post-money valuation. TechCrunch reported $1.4 billion, while a syndicated Yahoo Finance report and a Hetz Ventures investor post cited $1.2 billion. The valuation should therefore be described as approximately $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion unless the company or lead investors provide a definitive figure.

Fundamental’s announcement and the TechCrunch report provide the primary funding details.

Why structured data is a different AI problem

Most public attention in AI has focused on unstructured data: text, code, images, audio, and video. LLMs are built primarily to generate or transform these types of content.

Companies also hold vast amounts of structured information in databases, spreadsheets, warehouse tables, transaction systems, customer records, and sensor networks. The important question for that data is often not “What should I write?” but “What is likely to happen next?”

  • Will a transaction be fraudulent?
  • Which machine is likely to fail?
  • How much inventory will a retailer need next week?
  • Which customers are likely to leave?

There are two separate difficulties. First, an enterprise may have millions or billions of rows—far more than can simply be placed into an LLM’s context window. Second, prediction tasks require carefully defined targets, historical features, validation procedures, and operational decisions. They are not the same as asking a chatbot to summarize a spreadsheet.

This does not mean LLMs categorically cannot analyze tables. It means that using one for very large-scale tabular prediction may require retrieval systems, data pipelines, agents, or additional specialized models.

What is NEXUS?

Fundamental describes NEXUS as a foundation model for enterprise prediction and a “large tabular model,” or LTM. The company says it was pretrained on billions of real-world tables and is designed to work with numbers, categories, dates, and free text.

In this context, “foundation model” does not mean “language model.” It refers to a broadly pretrained system that can be adapted to multiple downstream tasks. NEXUS is intended to bring prior knowledge from pretraining to new enterprise datasets rather than requiring a separate model-development process for every table.

Fundamental says NEXUS can reduce manual feature engineering and bespoke model design. It also says the system is deterministic and does not use the transformer architecture associated with most modern LLMs.

  • Professional AI & Creator Workstation: AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 GPU with 32GB GDDR6 is engineered for AI development, professional content creation, and compute-intensive workloads.
  • Massive 32GB Memory Capacity: 32GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus provides ample bandwidth for large AI models, 8K video editing, and complex 3D rendering.
  • Advanced RDNA 4 with AI Accelerators: 64 Compute Units with 3rd Gen Ray Tracing and dedicated 2nd Gen AI Accelerators for groundbreaking AI performance and visual computing.

  • Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.

Those are company descriptions, not independently verified performance conclusions. “Deterministic” generally means the same input and configuration should produce the same output; it does not mean every prediction will be accurate. Data leakage, changing conditions, poor labels, incomplete records, and distribution shift can still produce bad results.

NEXUS compared with a general-purpose LLM

Dimension General-purpose LLM NEXUS positioning
Primary data Text, code, images, audio, and other unstructured content Structured tables and enterprise datasets
Typical output Generated language or multimodal content Predictions and decisions
Architecture Usually transformer-based Fundamental says NEXUS is not transformer-based
Reproducibility May vary with sampling and prompting Fundamental says NEXUS is deterministic
Enterprise data workflow Often requires retrieval, context construction, or agents Designed to connect directly to tabular data
Typical tasks Summarization, question answering, and generation Fraud detection, forecasting, and predictive maintenance
Main risk Context limits and imperfect numerical reasoning Data quality, drift, calibration, and fit with the customer’s data

Use cases Fundamental identifies

Fundamental’s product materials describe several commercial applications:

Use case Industries cited Potential decision
Fraud detection Finance, insurance, e-commerce, and gaming Decide whether a transaction requires blocking or review
Predictive maintenance Healthcare, energy, mining, and telecommunications Recommend which equipment or assets should be inspected
Demand forecasting Retail, supply chain, manufacturing, and travel Forecast demand to support inventory and capacity planning

These examples come from Fundamental’s product positioning, not independently validated customer case studies. TechCrunch also reported that the company had secured seven-figure contracts with Fortune 100 clients, but the customers, contract terms, deployment details, and return-on-investment figures were not disclosed.

AWS deployment and enterprise buying

TechCrunch reported a strategic AWS partnership that would allow AWS users to deploy NEXUS from existing instances. Fundamental’s website also describes direct deployment and an AWS integration. Its site links to an article titled “Bringing the model to the data: NEXUS launches on Amazon SageMaker,” indicating a SageMaker deployment path.

That information does not establish that NEXUS is a native SageMaker service, available in every AWS region, or generally available to all AWS customers. The reviewed materials do not disclose regions, pricing, listing terms, maximum dataset size, latency targets, supported file formats, or service-level commitments.

What the funding proves—and what it does not

What is confirmed

  • Fundamental announced its emergence from stealth on February 5, 2026.
  • The company disclosed $255 million in total funding and a $225 million Series A.
  • Established enterprise and technology investors participated.
  • Fundamental has reported an AWS relationship and Fortune 100 commercial contracts.
  • The company has built a product specifically around structured-data prediction.

What remains unproven in the public materials

  • Whether NEXUS consistently beats strong gradient-boosted-tree, AutoML, or specialized deep-learning baselines.
  • How the company’s “classic ML” benchmark was designed.
  • Which datasets, time splits, metrics, baselines, and confidence intervals support the benchmark graphic on the product page.
  • How NEXUS performs on tables that differ substantially from its pretraining distribution.
  • Whether the reported Fortune 100 contracts represent production deployments and measurable improvements.
  • Public pricing, maximum data size, latency, deployment regions, and model-refresh procedures.

Fundamental provides a research and whitepaper link, but the available coverage does not provide independently audited benchmark results.

Who might consider NEXUS?

NEXUS could be attractive to a large enterprise with high-volume structured data, several valuable prediction problems, and limited capacity to build a separate bespoke model for each use case. Repeatable output, deployment control, and AWS compatibility may also matter to organizations with strict infrastructure or governance requirements.

A buyer should evaluate it against the company’s own historical data, using time-based holdout sets and production-like constraints. The comparison should include not only predictive accuracy but also calibration, latency, explainability, monitoring, implementation effort, and total cost.

When conventional machine learning may be better

A conventional approach may remain preferable when a dataset is modest, a well-tuned gradient-boosted-tree model already performs strongly, or the organization needs maximum control over training and governance. Open-source tools may be more economical for teams with mature data-science expertise.

A cluster of four MS-S1 MAX units successfully ran a DeepSeek-R1 671B Q4 large model. A reserved cluster power-on interface allows for unified start-up and shutdown

NEXUS may also be a poor fit if the task is primarily causal inference, optimization, anomaly detection, or a specialized forecasting problem that the product does not clearly support. A foundation model’s broad pretraining does not automatically make it the best choice for every domain.

Questions buyers should ask before signing

  1. What independent benchmarks compare NEXUS with strong tabular baselines?
  2. Were evaluations conducted with realistic time-based splits that prevent leakage?
  3. How does the model handle temporal drift, rare-event class imbalance, and calibration?
  4. What explanations are available for a fraud block, maintenance alert, or forecast?
  5. What data leaves the customer environment, what is retained, and is customer data used for training?
  6. What are the latency and throughput limits for real-time decisions?
  7. Which warehouses, file formats, APIs, batch systems, and streaming systems are supported?
  8. How are model versions, retraining, monitoring, rollback, and reproducibility managed?
  9. What are the pricing model, contract minimums, professional-services requirements, and cloud costs?
  10. Can the vendor provide named customer results with measurable production outcomes?

The investment story behind the round

Fundamental’s financing reflects a broader investment thesis: valuable enterprise AI does not have to be centered on chatbots or content generation. Structured business data drives many high-value operational decisions, and a specialized model could be useful if it delivers strong results with less model-building work.

The counterargument is that tabular machine learning is already a mature field. Any enterprise foundation model must justify its cost and complexity against proven methods, existing AutoML platforms, and models that customers can train and operate themselves.

For now, the most accurate description is that Fundamental has raised an unusually large Series A to commercialize an ambitious approach to enterprise prediction. The funding and reported contracts establish momentum. They do not yet establish that NEXUS is a universal replacement for conventional machine learning or LLM-based data workflows.
