Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo understand what your card will cost and how payments work, read your current credit card agreement alongside your latest statement. The agreement explains the rules; the statement shows which rates and balances currently apply to your account. Terms vary by issuer and account, so a sample agreement or general explanation cannot confirm your own terms.
Where to find your credit card agreement
Start with the agreement for your specific account. If you cannot find it, ask your card issuer for a copy. You can also search the CFPB Credit Card Agreement Database for a general agreement from an issuer. The CFPB says database agreements are submitted by issuers and are not specific to individual accounts. Check the issuing bank, since it may differ from the brand shown on the card.
What interest rate applies to each balance?
Find the pricing table or disclosure box, often near the beginning of the agreement. Record the APR for each relevant category separately: purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances. The agreement explains which transactions and fees belong in each category; your statement shows the balances currently subject to those rates.
Check whether an APR is introductory, variable, or a penalty rate. Note when a promotional rate ends and what event can trigger a rate change. Do not assume a rate printed in a sample agreement applies to your account: use your own agreement and latest statement to identify current terms.

How payments are allocated
When you pay more than the minimum, the amount above the minimum generally goes first to the balance with the highest APR. The issuer generally decides how to allocate the minimum-payment portion. This distinction matters if you carry balances at different rates: paying more than the minimum can direct extra money toward the costliest balance, but the entire payment does not necessarily go there. See the CFPB’s explanation of payment allocation.
When does a credit card charge interest?
Look for the agreement’s grace-period rules. A grace period is the time between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date when qualifying purchases may avoid interest. Issuers are not required to offer one. When offered, it commonly applies to purchases, not cash advances.

Generally, to avoid interest on eligible purchases, you need to pay the full balance covered by the grace-period terms by the due date. If you do not pay in full, interest may apply to the unpaid balance, and new purchases may begin accruing interest from their transaction dates. The agreement also specifies the conditions for regaining a purchase grace period after carrying a balance; do not assume it is lost permanently. The CFPB explains what a grace period is and how it works.
Cash advances commonly accrue interest from the transaction date rather than receiving a purchase grace period. Check the agreement for the rules that apply to your card and transaction type.

How the issuer calculates interest
Many issuers calculate interest daily, often using an average daily balance. Your agreement may describe a daily periodic rate, an average daily balance method, a daily balance method, or whether interest compounds. The exact method and account terms vary.
In the contract definitions described by the CFPB, the daily periodic rate for a balance is its APR divided by 365. That definition does not provide enough information to calculate your charge by itself: the applicable rate, balance history, dates, and agreement method all matter. See the CFPB’s explanation of credit-card interest calculations.

Minimum payments, due dates, and late-payment terms
Find the minimum-payment formula and any fixed minimum, then check the due-date and payment-receipt rules. Review the fees and the conditions that could trigger a penalty APR or end a promotional rate. The minimum is the amount required to avoid delinquency; it is not necessarily a practical target for paying down the balance quickly.
Minimum-payment formulas differ among issuers and products. In agreements with publicly available calculation information reviewed for the CFPB’s 2025 Consumer Credit Card Market Report, fixed minimum-payment floors ranged from $15 to $50, with $40 the most common floor. Those are findings from agreements reviewed for that report, not current universal amounts or a prediction of your minimum. Check your own agreement and statement. Read the CFPB’s 2025 market report.

Your statement may show how long repayment could take if you make only minimum payments, as well as a separate payment amount that would repay the current balance in 36 months. These are illustrations based on the balance at the statement date, not guaranteed schedules; future purchases are not included. The CFPB explains minimum payments and repayment disclosures.
How to compare two agreements
Use the same assumptions about how you expect to use each card, then compare the terms that affect that use:
- Rates: Purchase, balance-transfer, and cash-advance APRs; whether each is variable or promotional; and when an introductory rate expires.
- Fees: Annual, transaction, late, returned-payment, and other fees listed in the agreement.
- Grace period: Which balances qualify, what you must pay to avoid purchase interest, and the conditions for regaining the grace period after carrying a balance.
- Payment allocation: How payments above the minimum are directed across balances with different APRs.
- Repayment rules: The minimum-payment formula, penalty-rate triggers, and consequences of missing a payment or allowing a promotion to expire.
Which terms matter most depends on whether you expect to pay in full, carry a balance, transfer debt, or take cash advances. The agreements let you compare those costs and rules; they do not establish which card is best without knowing how you will use it.
