A company’s order book shows future work under the company’s own definition; it is not revenue already earned. To judge revenue visibility, first identify exactly what is included, then separate signed contracts from awards and pipeline, map the amounts to expected delivery periods, and test cancellation, funding, execution and accounting risks.
A large balance can indicate demand, but only the portion that is contractually firm, economically viable and scheduled for delivery gives useful evidence about future revenue.

What an order book actually measures
“Order book,” “backlog,” “contracted backlog,” “order intake” and “pipeline” are management terms, not interchangeable measures. Each company sets its own perimeter. One issuer may count only signed purchase orders; another may include awarded projects awaiting signatures, framework options, limited notices to proceed, or work expected from a joint venture.
Read the definition and reconciliation before looking at the headline number. Check whether the company deducts revenue already recognized, and whether it adjusts for foreign-exchange movements, cancellations, scope changes or contract modifications. A BAE Systems offering memorandum, for example, describes an order-book measure linked to the IFRS 15 transaction price allocated to unsatisfied or partially satisfied performance obligations and reconciles that measure with order backlog. That accounting basis is more specific than a generic “future sales” statement.

There is no industry-wide guarantee that two companies’ backlog figures are comparable. A 2015 SEC-filed disclosure explicitly noted that revenue backlog had no standard industry definition and discussed uncertainty from cancellation, deferral, timing and recognition. Treat that filing as an illustration of the comparability problem, not as a current accounting rule for every issuer.
Start with the issuer’s definition and reconciliation
Use the latest annual report, quarterly filing, earnings release and investor presentation. Record the reporting date, currency, business segments and geographic scope alongside the number. Then answer these questions:
- Does the measure require a signed contract or accepted purchase order?
- Are letters of award, limited notices to proceed or framework agreements included?
- Are options, renewals, unfunded work, joint-venture projects or expected change orders counted?
- Is revenue already recognized subtracted from the opening balance?
- What additions, cancellations, foreign-exchange adjustments and scope changes explain the movement?
- Does the company show a reconciliation from opening backlog to closing backlog?
An SEC-filed 2024 example defines backlog using work awarded through signed contracts, limited notices to proceed or another assurance the issuer considers firm, while applying different inclusion rules to different contract types. That kind of contract-by-contract policy matters more than the label “backlog.”

| Category | What it usually means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Signed or accepted contract | An executed agreement or firm order accepted by the company, subject to its terms and performance conditions. | Strongest evidence among future-work measures, but still exposed to termination rights, customer credit, funding and execution risk. |
| Awarded but unsigned work | The customer has selected or awarded the project, but the definitive contract is not complete. A limited notice to proceed may authorize only part of the work. | Keep separate from fully contracted backlog. Determine what work is authorized and how much can be withdrawn before signature. |
| Options, unfunded amounts and pipeline | Potential future activity, including optional phases, projects awaiting funding or opportunities not yet awarded. | Use as a demand indicator, never as booked revenue. Quantify it separately from contractual commitments. |
Fluence defines contracted or order intake as firm and binding orders received and accepted. Its disclosures also distinguish contracted backlog from an uncontracted pipeline. Ameresco separately presents fully contracted backlog and awarded projects without signed customer contracts, noting that an award can precede detailed audits and contract completion. Those examples show why the categories should not be combined.

Map backlog to the period when revenue can be recognized
Total backlog answers “how much work is disclosed?” It does not answer “how much revenue will appear in the next quarter or year?” Look for a periodized schedule, a 12-month portion, delivery milestones, construction progress, service commencement dates and the company’s revenue-recognition policy.
Check the 12-month or current-year portion
A 12-month backlog measure is useful only when its definition is clear. It may represent work expected to be delivered or recognized during the next 12 months, not necessarily cash collected in that period. Compare it with the total backlog and ask whether the remainder is scheduled over several years or has no stated timing.

Identify the revenue-recognition trigger
Some contracts recognize revenue over time as performance obligations are satisfied; others recognize it at delivery, substantial completion or another milestone. Fluence describes product projects in execution before substantial completion, service contracts before service begins and digital agreements before subscription start. The same order value can therefore produce very different quarterly revenue patterns.
Allow for long conversion cycles
Ameresco describes a long conversion cycle for some awarded projects and reports a separate 12-month project-backlog measure. A project can remain in an order-book category while audits, financing, permitting, engineering, procurement or customer approvals are completed. Do not infer a near-term revenue surge from a multi-year project total.
Test whether new orders are replacing recognized revenue
Compare order intake with recognized revenue over the same period and scope. If additions exceed revenue recognized, the order book may be growing; if revenue exceeds additions, it may be running down. The comparison is informative only after checking the company’s definitions.

Fluence describes book-to-sales as adjusted order intake divided by revenue for the period. Before using a ratio, verify:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- the numerator’s treatment of cancellations, amendments, foreign exchange and acquisitions;
- whether the denominator is total company revenue or only the same segment;
- that both figures cover the same quarter, fiscal year and currency basis; and
- whether “adjusted” items make the ratio unlike the raw order and revenue figures shown elsewhere.
A ratio above one means more qualifying orders were recorded than revenue recognized during that period. It does not prove that future revenue, cash flow or margins will be strong. A single quarter can be distorted by a large project award, shipment timing or a customer cancellation.
Assess the quality behind the headline amount
Cancellation and termination rights
Read the risk factors and contract descriptions for customer termination, convenience cancellation, milestone acceptance and refund provisions. Fluence states that contracted backlog or pipeline may not become revenue in the originally expected period or at all. Treat that qualification as a central analytical issue, not boilerplate to ignore.
Funding and customer credit
An awarded project may depend on the customer obtaining financing, grants or internal approval. Examine advance payments, milestone funding, customer concentration and counterparty credit where disclosed. An unfunded or conditional award belongs in a lower-certainty category even if the gross project value is large.
Execution, scope and supply constraints
Engineering changes, permitting, labor availability, component shortages, subcontractor performance and disputes can delay or reduce conversion. Scope changes may increase or decrease the eventual transaction price. Check costs to complete and contract-asset or deferred-revenue disclosures when available.

Margin and working-capital economics
Backlog can be revenue-positive but economically weak. Fixed-price work may carry cost-overrun risk, while milestone contracts can require substantial working capital before collection. Fluence cautions that contracted backlog may not generate margins equal to historical operating results. Look for expected gross margin, loss provisions, advance billing and cash-conversion requirements rather than assuming every backlog dollar has the company’s average margin.
Concentration and geography
Identify whether a few customers or projects account for a large share of the balance. Also note currency exposure, regulatory approvals and country risk. A diversified backlog is generally less vulnerable to one cancellation than a similarly sized balance concentrated in one customer or jurisdiction, but the company’s own concentration disclosures should determine the conclusion.
Use a repeatable order-book worksheet
- Capture the definition. Copy the company’s wording, reporting date, currency, segment scope and included contract types.
- Split the categories. Put signed or accepted work, awarded unsigned work, options, unfunded amounts and pipeline on separate lines.
- Reconcile the movement. Start with opening backlog, add orders or awards, subtract recognized revenue, and record cancellations, foreign-exchange effects and other adjustments exactly as disclosed.
- Map timing. Record the 12-month or current-year amount, later-year amounts, delivery milestones and the accounting event that creates revenue.
- Test conversion conditions. Note funding, permits, customer approvals, termination rights, supply dependencies and execution milestones.
- Review economics. Record expected margin, costs to complete, cash requirements, customer concentration and any loss provisions.
- Compare with history. Use published historical cohorts or cancellation and conversion rates only when the company provides a comparable methodology. Do not calculate a conversion rate from unmatched totals.
- Form a conclusion. Describe visibility as high, moderate or low only after weighing certainty, timing and execution—not from the headline balance alone.
Worked example: interpreting Ameresco’s June 30, 2026 disclosure
Ameresco reported total project backlog of $6,725.649 million at June 30, 2026. The company divided that amount into $2,301.515 million fully contracted and $4,424.134 million awarded but not yet signed. It also reported $1,099.994 million of 12-month project backlog.
| Ameresco category | Reported amount (June 30, 2026) | Analytical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Total project backlog | $6,725.649 million | All projects included under Ameresco’s stated project-backlog policy; not all are signed contracts. |
| Fully contracted | $2,301.515 million | The firmer contractual portion, still subject to performance, funding and termination conditions. |
| Awarded, not yet signed | $4,424.134 million | Selected or awarded work that had not reached a signed customer contract; do not treat as equivalent to contracted backlog. |
| 12-month project backlog | $1,099.994 million | Ameresco’s stated near-term portion; timing and recognition depend on its definition and project milestones. |
The useful conclusion is not that $6.7 billion will become revenue immediately. The disclosure lets you distinguish contractual certainty from unsigned awards and isolate the company’s stated near-term amount. You would still need to read the project timing, funding and conversion-cycle discussion before forecasting quarterly revenue.

| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Definition and scope | Does the figure include signed work only, awards, options, pipeline, joint ventures or unfunded amounts? |
| Commitment and cancellation | Is there an executed contract, customer acceptance, funding condition or termination right? |
| Timing | What is expected within 12 months or each fiscal year, and which milestones trigger recognition? |
| Reconciliation | How did orders, recognized revenue, cancellations, foreign exchange and scope changes alter the balance? |
| Economics | What margins, costs to complete, working-capital needs and loss provisions attach to the work? |
| Concentration | How much depends on one customer, project, geography, regulator or supplier? |
| Track record | Does the issuer publish comparable conversion, delay or cancellation history? |
A company with a smaller, fully contracted, near-term backlog can offer more usable visibility than one with a larger total dominated by unsigned awards or options. Raw dollars are not a fair cross-company ranking until these dimensions match.
Accounting signals that help—and limits to what they prove
Contract assets, deferred revenue, remaining performance obligations and revenue recognized over time can help explain how work moves through the accounts. They are not substitutes for the company’s management-defined backlog. A remaining-performance-obligation disclosure may follow IFRS 15 or ASC 606 rules, while an investor-presentation backlog can include categories outside that accounting measure.
Look for a bridge between management metrics and statutory revenue where the issuer provides one. If no bridge is supplied, keep the measures separate in your analysis. A backlog increase without a corresponding accounting explanation may reflect new awards, a change in scope, foreign exchange or a revised definition rather than additional economically firm work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling backlog guaranteed revenue: Replace “will earn” with the exact contractual and timing qualification.
- Combining pipeline with contracts: Present pipeline as potential demand and keep it out of booked-revenue estimates.
- Comparing raw totals across companies: Normalize definitions, currencies, segments and reporting dates first.
- Using one book-to-sales quarter as a forecast: Check order size, seasonality, cancellations and the company’s calculation.
- Ignoring unsigned awards: Separate awarded-but-unsigned work and identify what remains to be negotiated or funded.
- Assuming backlog equals margin: Review contract type, costs to complete and working-capital requirements.
- Overlooking timing: Find the 12-month amount and recognition milestones instead of dividing total backlog by annual revenue.
- Inventing a conversion rate: Use only comparable historical cohorts and an explicit company methodology.
A practical verdict for investors
Revenue visibility is strongest when a company discloses a clearly defined, reconciled balance dominated by signed contracts, a credible near-term schedule, funded projects, manageable cancellation rights and economics consistent with its historical margins. Visibility is weaker when the balance relies on awards awaiting signatures, options or unfunded pipeline, has no periodized schedule, or is exposed to customer concentration and execution bottlenecks.
Read the order book as a structured probability assessment: first establish what is counted, then how firm it is, when it can be recognized, and what could prevent conversion. The number becomes useful only after those conditions are attached to it.
