How to Prepare for GST Payments When Monthly Sales Increase

A practical India GST cash-planning method for rising sales: estimate net liability, verify eligible input tax credit, reconcile ledgers and confirm your return-period due date.

When sales rise, do not treat the full increase as spendable cash: estimate output GST by supply and rate, subtract only eligible input tax credit, account for balances already in your GST ledgers, and reserve for the payment date shown for your return period. There is no universal percentage of sales to set aside. Your net liability depends on your supplies, applicable rates, eligible credits, filing category and ledger balances.

Build a rolling GST cash forecast

Update a month-by-month worksheet as sales invoices and purchase documents arrive. Forecast the liability rather than applying a flat percentage to revenue.

  • Taxable sales, grouped by applicable rate and supply type.
  • Estimated output tax, adjusted for credit notes and returns.
  • Purchase-side input tax credit that appears eligible, checked against GSTR-2B.
  • Expected net liability after eligible credits.
  • Amounts already deposited in the electronic cash ledger and available balance in the electronic credit ledger.
  • The date funds need to be available, based on the selected return period and the GST Portal’s due-date display.

This is a planning worksheet, not a substitute for correctly classifying supplies or determining credit eligibility. A sales increase can raise expected output tax, but sales growth alone does not establish how much cash will be payable.

Estimate credits before forecasting cash due

Use GSTR-2B as a key check when determining input tax credit for GSTR-3B. GSTN says GSTR-2B draws on supplier-reported B2B documents and other specified information. Match it to purchase records, follow up on missing or incorrect supplier documents, and separate eligible credit from ineligible amounts or amounts requiring reversal. Do not assume every purchase invoice reduces the current payment. GSTN guidance on GSTR-2B.

Reconcile the estimate before filing and paying

Before filing, compare the worksheet with the records and ledgers that determine the actual return liability. Portal reports and features may change, so use the reports currently available for the period.

  1. Match sales invoices, credit notes and debit notes to outward-supply reporting.
  2. Match purchase documents to GSTR-2B and identify the eligible credit to claim.
  3. Compare the return liability with the liability register and review the system-generated GSTR-3B summary and filed return copy.
  4. Calculate expected cash payment using the liability and the balances in the electronic cash and credit ledgers.
  5. Keep challans and bank confirmations, then verify that a cash deposit has actually been credited to the electronic cash ledger.

CBIC rules provide for paying return liability by debiting the electronic credit ledger or electronic cash ledger, as applicable. For a cash deposit, the process includes generating a challan; the cash ledger is credited after the bank successfully credits the government account and a Challan Identification Number is generated. A generated challan alone is not proof that the money is available in the ledger. CBIC’s CGST Rules.

Check the filing cycle before setting payment dates

Due dates depend on filing category, return period and, for some QRMP dates, the state or union territory of the principal place of business. These are general dates in official guidance, not a guarantee that a particular period has not been extended. Check the live due date shown for the selected period on the GST Portal and any current notification. GST Portal return guidance.

Monthly filing

GST Portal guidance gives the general GSTR-1 due date as the 11th of the succeeding month for monthly filers, subject to extensions by government notification. GSTR-1 reports outward supplies. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ describes monthly GST payment on or before the 20th of the succeeding month as a general summary; confirm the applicable category, current provisions and portal date for your return. GST Portal guidance and CBIC sectoral FAQ.

QRMP

The Quarterly Return Monthly Payment scheme combines quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns with monthly tax payments through challan. GSTN guidance describes eligibility as PAN-based aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore in both the current and preceding financial years, provided the last due GSTR-3B return has been filed. Check current eligibility wording, your filing preference and portal status; a rise in sales does not, by itself, tell you that your filing cycle has changed. GSTN’s QRMP FAQ.

Under GSTN’s general QRMP dates, quarterly GSTR-1 is due on the 13th of the succeeding month. Quarterly GSTR-3B is generally due on the 22nd or 24th after the quarter, depending on the state or union territory of the principal place of business. GSTN’s 2025 advisory says to check updated notifications. GSTN’s QRMP advisory.

Consider whether optional IFF reporting helps customers

If you are on QRMP, the optional Invoice Furnishing Facility lets you furnish outward invoice details, including B2B invoices, for the first two months of a quarter. That can let recipients receive credit information sooner. IFF is optional and does not replace the quarterly return or monthly payment pattern. GSTN guidance on IFF.

Make the reserve operational

Once the worksheet gives you a realistic estimate, keep the expected payment amount separate from money available for ordinary business spending and update it as invoices, eligible credits, ledger balances and return-period dates change. Near filing, replace estimates with reconciled return figures and portal ledger values. Schedule the transfer early enough to allow for successful bank settlement and confirmation in the cash ledger.
