How to Pay Estimated Taxes After a Large Capital Gain

A large capital gain may call for an estimated federal tax payment, but the answer depends on your total tax, withholding, safe harbor and when the gain arrived.

A large capital gain does not automatically mean you must make a federal estimated-tax payment. The IRS generally looks at how much tax you expect to owe after withholding and refundable credits, then compares your payments with a current-year or prior-year safe harbor. If the gain arrived late or your income was uneven, the annualized income installment method may help match payments to when income was received.

For a 2026 estimate, use the 2026 Form 1040-ES and IRS Publication 505, not a percentage of the sale proceeds. Your taxable gain, other income, deductions, credits, withholding and payment history all affect the result.

First decide whether an estimated payment is required

The federal estimated-tax rules are a pay-as-you-go system: taxpayers generally pay income tax during the year through withholding, estimated payments, or both. The IRS cautions that “A sizable capital gain by itself may not give you a requirement to make a quarterly estimated tax payment.” What matters is your expected overall tax and how much has already been paid in.

The general individual test

For many individuals, estimated payments are generally required if both of these conditions apply:

  • Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
  • You expect to owe at least $1,000 in federal tax after subtracting withholding and refundable credits.
  • Your withholding and refundable credits are expected to be less than the smaller of 90% of your current-year tax or the applicable prior-year safe-harbor amount.

The prior-year comparison is generally 100% of the prior-year tax. It is generally 110% instead for a taxpayer whose prior-year adjusted gross income was over $150,000, or over $75,000 if married filing separately. Check the instructions for the relevant tax year, including exceptions and special rules, before relying on a safe harbor.

These are general rules, not a result for every taxpayer. Your filing situation and other facts may affect the calculation. Meeting a safe harbor can help avoid an underpayment penalty; it does not necessarily mean your eventual tax bill is fully paid. Conversely, a voluntary estimated payment can reduce the amount due with a return, but making one does not by itself establish that you were legally required to pay that amount.

The $1,000 test and the safe-harbor comparison answer related but different questions. The first asks whether you expect to owe at least that amount after withholding and refundable credits. The second compares payments with a percentage of current-year tax or the applicable prior-year amount. Do not assume that passing one comparison alone settles the result. Publication 505 and the matching tax-year instructions explain exceptions and special situations that may change how the general test applies.

Withholding can count toward the calculation

Do not look only at estimated-tax payments. Federal income-tax withholding and refundable credits are part of the comparison. If you receive wages or other income subject to withholding, increasing eligible withholding may be an alternative to making a separate estimated payment. Compare the expected withholding by payment period with the amount needed under the applicable rules; a year-end total alone may not show whether an earlier installment was short.

This matters when a gain occurs after earlier installments have already come due. Your year-to-date withholding, earlier estimated payments and the period in which new income arose all belong in the calculation. Keep a record of what was withheld and paid, and when, rather than relying only on a single annual total.

Work out the tax on the gain, not a percentage of the sale price

The sale proceeds are not the same thing as the taxable gain, and the gain alone does not determine the tax. A useful estimate requires the taxable gain and the rest of your expected tax picture. The rate applied to a gain is not necessarily the same as the rate applied to ordinary income, so a generic percentage of proceeds is not a sound shortcut.

Gather the figures that affect the estimate

  • The transaction’s taxable gain and its tax character, based on your records and applicable tax rules.
  • Your other expected income, deductions and credits for the year.
  • Expected federal withholding and any estimated payments already made.
  • Your prior-year tax and adjusted gross income, if you are checking the prior-year safe harbor.
  • The dates income was recognized, if you may use the annualized income installment method.

For tax year 2026, use the applicable Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 worksheets. Publication 505 includes a Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet for estimated-tax computations involving net capital gain or qualified dividends. Follow the tax-year instructions and use the worksheet that fits your facts rather than treating the entire gain as ordinary income or applying a flat rate.

Why the gain date and character matter

Two taxpayers with the same sale proceeds can have different taxable gains and different total tax outcomes. The amount treated as gain, its character, the taxpayer’s other income and deductions, and the applicable capital-gain and qualified-dividend treatment all matter. A calculation based only on the amount deposited after a sale leaves out information needed to estimate tax.

The date the gain was recognized can matter separately from its amount. A gain realized during a later payment period may affect the installment calculation for that period and the remaining periods. If you may use annualization, keep transaction records showing when the gain was recognized, along with the records needed to support the taxable amount. Those dates help establish whether income was uneven and support the period-by-period worksheet calculation.

If your transaction involves complicated basis, an installment sale, real estate, a business, a trust, foreign issues or state tax, the general federal individual worksheets described here may not settle the question. Get advice from a tax professional or consult the authority and rules that apply to that transaction. State income-tax payment requirements are separate and are not determined by the federal tests in this guide.

Choose between regular installments and annualizing uneven income

After estimating your overall tax, decide how to account for the timing of your income. The regular installment approach is often easier when income arrives relatively evenly. If a large gain or other income arrived later in the year, annualizing may better reflect when you received it.

Approach How it works When it may fit Trade-off
Regular installments and safe-harbor comparison Compare expected withholding and estimated payments with the required annual payment under the applicable rules; regular installments generally spread that amount across payment periods. Income is relatively even, or you prefer a simpler approach and can meet the applicable payment requirement. A later gain may make an earlier period look underpaid if the calculation assumes income arrived evenly.
Annualized income installment method Calculate required installments using income accumulated during the relevant periods, rather than treating the full year’s income as though it arrived evenly. A one-time gain or other uneven income makes the timing of income important to the installment calculation. It takes more calculation and supporting records; Form 2210 with Schedule AI is used to show the annualized calculation when applicable.

Neither approach is guaranteed to minimize tax or eliminate a penalty. Compare your income timing, expected final tax, withholding and payments already made, as well as the effort required to document annualization. Do not assume that an annualized calculation changes the tax owed for the year: it changes how required installments are evaluated in light of when income arrived.

The practical choice is not simply “pay quarterly” versus “do not pay.” First estimate the annual tax and determine the applicable required-payment amount. Then consider whether the regular installment approach or annualization best reflects your income timing and payment history. A regular calculation is generally more straightforward when income is even. Annualization can be useful for a late or one-time gain, but it requires more detailed period calculations and records. Either way, check the applicable safe harbor and avoid treating a voluntary payment as proof of the legal minimum.

When annualization may help

Suppose a taxpayer’s income was modest early in the year and a large investment gain was recognized later. Treating that gain as if it had been earned evenly throughout the year may not reflect the actual timing. Annualized installments use cumulative income periods to calculate what was due as income accumulated. The IRS says a taxpayer with a sizable gain may make or increase the payment for the quarter in which the gain was realized; the precise installment depends on the taxpayer’s figures and the applicable worksheet.

For 2026, Publication 505’s Annualized Estimated Tax Worksheet is Worksheet 2-9, and its capital-gain worksheet for annualized estimated tax is Worksheet 2-10. Use the matching tax-year worksheets and follow their instructions. When annualizing to show that payments matched uneven income, the IRS FAQ says to attach Form 2210 with Schedule AI. Retain records supporting when the gain was recognized and how you calculated each installment.

Annualization is not a flat adjustment to the total gain or a way to change the final tax. It evaluates installments based on income through cumulative periods. Work through the worksheet for each period, using the relevant income and tax information through that point. If your circumstances include more than a straightforward investment gain, the worksheet may be difficult to apply; the form instructions or a tax professional can help clarify which method and records fit your situation.

Use the correct federal payment period and due date

The ordinary federal individual estimated-tax schedule has four payment periods, but they are not all three months long. The usual dates below apply to the periods shown; weekends, legal holidays, fiscal years, farming or fishing, and other special rules can change timing.

Income/payment period Usual due date
January 1–March 31 April 15
April 1–May 31 June 15
June 1–August 31 September 15
September 1–December 31 January 15 of the following year

If income subject to estimated tax does not arise until a later period, Publication 505 explains that the first payment may be due for that later period, with later installments as applicable. Do not assume that a gain realized late in the year means a payment was necessarily due in an earlier period; use the relevant worksheet and timing rules. If you are annualizing, calculate each cumulative-period installment rather than simply dividing an annual amount into four equal payments.

For example, if you recognize the gain in the June–August period, the usual due date associated with that period is September 15. That is not, by itself, enough to determine the amount due: your total expected tax, prior payments, withholding and annualized calculation can all affect it. Check the current tax-year instructions for adjusted dates and special rules instead of assuming the ordinary calendar applies to every taxpayer.

Calculate the amount with the tax-year worksheets

  1. Estimate your full-year tax. Use the applicable Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 worksheets, including the capital-gain or qualified-dividend worksheet where relevant. Include the gain and your other expected income, deductions and credits.
  2. Subtract amounts already being paid in. Account for expected withholding, refundable credits and estimated payments already made. Keep the payment periods in view, especially if income or withholding was uneven.
  3. Check the general payment tests and safe harbors. Determine whether you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits, and compare payments with the applicable current-year and prior-year amounts. Apply the higher-income prior-year percentage if the AGI rule applies, and check for exceptions.
  4. Decide whether to annualize. If income arrived unevenly, use the annualized worksheets to calculate installments based on income through each period. Use Worksheet 2-9 and, where applicable, Worksheet 2-10 in 2026 Publication 505.
  5. Confirm the installment date and amount. Match each calculated installment to its payment period and applicable due date. If a date may be affected by a weekend, holiday or special rule, verify the current instructions.
  6. Keep the calculation record. Save the worksheets, dates and records supporting the gain and payments. If annualization is relevant, retain the information needed to complete Form 2210 Schedule AI.

The amount to pay cannot be determined from the sale proceeds alone. Without the transaction details and the rest of your tax information, there is no reliable individualized payment number to give. Avoid using an arbitrary fraction of proceeds as a substitute for the Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 calculation.

When filling out the worksheets, use the version for the tax year at issue. Tax-year-specific instructions matter: the 2026 worksheet numbers and payment guidance should not automatically be carried over to a different year. Revisit your estimate if your income, deductions, credits, withholding or estimated payments change during the year. A revised estimate can help you make a more informed payment for a later period, though it does not automatically erase a shortfall from an earlier one.

Make the payment through an IRS channel

The IRS lists payment through an IRS online account, Direct Pay from a bank account, by phone or through the IRS app, and by check or money order using a Form 1040-ES voucher. Payment channels and their instructions can change, so confirm the current options on the IRS payment site before acting. Form 1040-ES is used to figure and pay estimated tax.

  1. Choose a listed payment method. Use an IRS channel and follow its current payment instructions; if mailing a check or money order, use the appropriate Form 1040-ES voucher.
  2. Select the payment type and tax year carefully. Identify the payment as estimated tax and choose the correct tax year in the payment flow. A payment applied to the wrong year or category may not be credited as intended.
  3. Verify the amount and submit by the relevant date. Use the installment amount from your calculation, not a guess based on sale proceeds.
  4. Keep proof of payment. Save the online confirmation or, for a mailed payment, the voucher and payment records. These records help reconcile payments when preparing the return or reviewing a possible penalty.

Before submitting, check that the payment is designated for the correct tax year and as an estimated-tax payment, not another payment category. Keep the confirmation number or other proof with your calculation records. If mailing a payment, retain a copy of the voucher and the payment information. Confirm current payment instructions on the IRS site, since channels and steps can change.

Understand the underpayment penalty before the year ends

The federal system is pay-as-you-go, and a penalty may apply if too little tax was paid through withholding and estimated payments during the year. The general routes to avoiding a penalty include meeting the applicable safe-harbor amount or owing less than $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits; special rules apply. Use IRS Topic 306 and the relevant tax-year instructions when evaluating your situation.

The penalty is period-specific. Paying more later, or receiving a refund when you file, does not automatically erase a shortfall from an earlier installment period. If income was uneven, a correctly calculated and documented annualized income installment may show that a smaller earlier installment was appropriate. Form 2210 is used to determine whether a penalty is due; Schedule AI documents annualized income installments when applicable.

This is why payment timing and records matter even if you expect to settle the full balance when filing your return. A total paid by year-end may not show whether the required amounts were paid in each period. Conversely, if your income genuinely arose unevenly, annualization may support a different period-by-period result than an even-income assumption. Use the applicable worksheet and preserve the supporting calculations.

If you realize a gain after an installment date

Recalculate using the income timing and the appropriate worksheets. A later gain may affect a later installment without proving that the same amount should have been paid in an earlier period. If the regular calculation suggests an earlier shortfall, assess whether annualization applies and document the result rather than assuming that a late payment or a year-end refund settles the period-by-period question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you cannot determine the required amount

Work through the applicable Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 instructions, checking your payment and withholding records by period. A tax professional may be useful when the gain’s basis or character is uncertain, the transaction has specialized tax treatment, or the annualized calculation is difficult to apply. Do not substitute an unsupported flat rate for a calculation based on your actual tax facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a large capital gain automatically require a quarterly estimated-tax payment?

No. The IRS says a sizable gain by itself may not create a payment requirement. The general individual test considers whether you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits and whether withholding and credits are below the smaller of 90% of current-year tax or the applicable prior-year safe-harbor amount. Exceptions and special rules may apply.

Can I use a percentage of the sale proceeds to estimate what I owe?

That is not a reliable shortcut. Sale proceeds are not necessarily the taxable gain, and the gain’s character, your other income, deductions, credits and withholding affect the result. Use the tax-year Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 worksheets, including the capital-gain worksheet where relevant.

What if I realized the gain late in the year?

A later gain may affect the installment for the period in which it was recognized. If your income was uneven, Publication 505’s annualized income installment method may help calculate required payments based on cumulative income periods. Keep records of the gain date and use the matching worksheets; do not assume the gain was due in an earlier period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I increase withholding instead of making a separate estimated payment?

Eligible withholding can count toward the calculation, and increasing it may be an alternative to a separate estimated payment. Compare withholding and other payments by period, not only as a year-end total, because an underpayment penalty can be period-specific.

What are the usual federal estimated-tax due dates?

For most individuals, the usual dates are April 15 for January–March, June 15 for April–May, September 15 for June–August, and January 15 of the following year for September–December. Weekends, legal holidays, fiscal years, farming or fishing, and other special rules can change the timing.

Where can I pay federal estimated tax?

The IRS lists an online account, Direct Pay from a bank account, payment by phone or through the IRS app, and check or money order using a Form 1040-ES voucher. Confirm current options and instructions on the IRS payment site, select the correct tax year and estimated-tax payment type, and keep proof of payment.

Does paying later or getting a refund at filing fix an earlier underpayment?

Not automatically. The underpayment penalty is period-specific. A later payment or year-end refund does not necessarily cure an earlier installment shortfall. If income was uneven, a properly calculated annualized installment may support a different result; Form 2210 and Schedule AI apply when relevant.

The Bottom Line

A large gain does not decide the payment question on its own. Estimate your federal tax using the taxable gain and your full tax picture, compare withholding and payments with the applicable safe harbor, and use annualization if the timing of income makes it relevant. Pay through an official IRS channel by the applicable period deadline, and keep the calculations and payment records.
