First identify what kind of financing each offer is: a term loan, line of credit, invoice factoring, merchant cash advance, or another product. These structures can have different pricing and repayment mechanics, so a low-looking rate on one offer may not be comparable to a number quoted for another.
This guide focuses on financing for U.S. small businesses. U.S. consumer credit disclosure standards do not automatically apply to small-business credit, and rules can differ by jurisdiction and product. Get the complete written offer and payment schedule before comparing costs.

Start by identifying the financing product
“Digital business loan” describes how financing may be found or originated, not a single standardized loan structure. Before comparing price, establish what the provider is offering and how repayment works. The Federal Reserve Board’s March 2025 publication identifies business credit cards, lines of credit, term loans, invoice factoring, merchant cash advances, and SBA loans as distinct types of business financing. Their quoted prices and cash flows may not be directly comparable.

Ask for the payment schedule, total repayment, and whether the rate is fixed or variable.
- Line of credit: The business can draw funds up to an approved limit. Clarify whether quoted costs apply to the amount drawn, whether there are fees for maintaining or using the line, and how repayment affects available credit.
- Invoice factoring: Financing is tied to invoices. Ask what invoices are eligible, what amount will be advanced, what charges apply, and how and when any remaining proceeds are paid.
- Merchant cash advance (MCA): A provider advances money in exchange for repayment associated with future sales or receipts. Determine the total amount owed, how collections are calculated, and whether the contract describes payments as fixed or sales-linked. FTC staff guidance published in 2020 describes MCAs as a generally higher-cost, short-term option; that is descriptive guidance, not a current market-wide price estimate.
- SBA-backed financing: A participating lender makes the loan under a particular SBA program. Program rules and fees can differ from other digital offers. The SBA’s 7(a) and microloan pages describe different programs and terms.
Ask the provider to name the legal product and identify the contract that governs it. If the offer uses terms such as “factor rate,” “holdback,” “remittance,” or “estimated APR,” request a written definition and the calculation behind the figure before treating it as comparable to another offer.

Build a like-for-like comparison
Use one row per written offer and capture the same information for each. A headline rate is only one entry in the comparison; an offer with a lower stated rate can still cost more if it has substantial required fees, a short repayment period, or a demanding payment cadence.
| What to compare | What to record or ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Amount requested and deposited | Gross amount financed; each deduction at funding; net dollars expected in the business account | Costs should be compared against usable proceeds, not just the amount printed at the top of the offer. |
| Quoted pricing | Stated interest rate, APR, estimated APR, factor rate, or flat fee; what each figure includes and assumes | Different pricing labels may describe different calculations, and some quoted figures exclude fees. |
| Required charges | Origination, application, maintenance, late, servicing, and other required fees, including when each is charged | A required charge affects the real cost even if it is not included in the advertised rate. |
| Total repayment | Total dollars due over the full schedule, including required charges that are not deducted at funding | This is the clearest dollar comparison when offers have different labels or payment structures. |
| Payment schedule | Payment amount or calculation, frequency, first due date, and whether payments can change | Frequency and variability affect whether the business can meet obligations from incoming cash. |
| Term and payoff | Expected or scheduled repayment period; how the contract defines a paid-off balance | A shorter schedule can create greater cash-flow pressure even when the total cost is lower. |
| Rate behavior | Fixed or variable pricing; for a variable rate, the index, adjustment timing, and applicable limits | A variable rate may change the payment or total cost over the life of the financing. |
| Security and guarantees | Collateral, lien or security interest, and any personal guarantee | These terms describe obligations beyond the payment amount and should be understood before signing. |
| Early repayment | Prepayment fee, payoff calculation, or discount; whether early payment reduces the total cost | Paying early may not save money if charges are fixed or the contract imposes a fee. |
Request the full written schedule and contract, not just a summary screen or verbal estimate. If a provider will not state the total repayment or explain its pricing in writing, you do not yet have enough information for a sound comparison.
Calculate the dollars that matter
For each offer, separate net proceeds from total repayment. Net proceeds are the dollars the business can actually use after amounts withheld at funding. Total repayment is the sum of all required payments and charges over the contract, including charges paid separately rather than withheld upfront.
Recommended Free Tools
A simple first-pass dollar cost is:
Total dollar cost = total required repayment and charges − net proceeds received.
This calculation is useful for understanding cash outflow, but it does not by itself make offers with different durations and payment patterns economically equivalent. A loan repaid over a longer period can have a different annualized cost from one with the same dollar cost repaid quickly. Use the provider’s APR or estimated APR when it is available, and ask for the assumptions and full fee schedule behind it. Do not calculate or claim an APR from a factor rate or a partial offer: timing of payments and all fees matter.

For example, suppose a hypothetical offer lists $20,000 but deducts $500 at funding, so the business receives $19,500. If the full schedule requires $23,000 in payments and there are no other required charges, the simple dollar cost is $3,500: $23,000 less $19,500. If there are additional fees, include them in the repayment-and-charges total. This illustration is arithmetic, not a market offer or an APR estimate.
Check whether the comparison includes costs that are easy to miss: fees taken out of the advance, periodic account or maintenance charges, late charges, and charges due at payoff. Do not count a charge twice if it is already included in the stated total repayment. Ask the provider to reconcile its advertised total with the scheduled payments and the fee section of the contract.

Understand interest rates, APR, factor rates, and flat fees
An interest rate describes the rate charged on borrowed money, but a rate quote alone does not tell you the complete cost if required fees are omitted. APR is intended to express borrowing cost on an annualized basis, but a business-financing offer may not provide it or may label a figure as an estimate. Check what cash flows, fees, and timing the estimate includes rather than assuming two APRs were calculated on identical terms.
The Federal Reserve Board’s March 2025 publication explains that Truth in Lending Act (TILA) disclosure standards for consumer credit products do not apply to small-business credit. As a result, business financing offers may quote pricing differently from consumer credit disclosures. The publication also notes that some nonbank providers use factor rates instead of APR or interest rates, and that a stated interest rate may omit fees.
What a factor rate tells you—and what it does not
A factor rate is a pricing figure used in some financing offers; it should not be read as an APR. A factor rate of 1.15, for instance, does not mean the annual cost is 15%. The Federal Reserve publication discusses one lender’s advertised factor rate of 1.15 and an analysis estimating its APR at approximately 70%. That is one specific example, not a standard conversion, typical rate, or basis for estimating another offer. The repayment schedule, cash-flow timing, and fees can change the comparison.

Ask the provider to show how its factor rate translates into total dollars due, what fees are added or withheld, and what payment assumptions underpin any APR estimate. If the provider cannot give an APR, compare net proceeds, full scheduled payments, and all required charges, while recognizing that a total-dollar figure does not replace an annualized comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFlat fees need a full schedule too
A flat fee can obscure how expensive financing is when payments are made quickly. FTC staff guidance from 2020 notes that some online small-business financing involves flat fees rather than interest and may require weekly or even daily repayment. That guidance describes possible structures; it is not a current market-wide price survey. Ask whether the stated fee is the complete charge, whether payment timing affects the estimated APR, and whether there are additional fees or early-payoff adjustments.
Compare payment amount, frequency, and term
Ask for the dates and amounts—or the exact formula for calculating each payment—for the entire repayment period. A monthly amount can be easier to plan around than daily deductions, but cadence alone does not establish which offer is cheaper. Compare both the dollar cost and the schedule against the timing of the business’s receipts and essential expenses.
- Write down the first due date and every payment interval. Identify whether payments are monthly, weekly, daily, or triggered by sales or receipts.
- Record the payment amount or calculation. For fixed payments, capture each amount and whether it can change. For sales-linked repayment, record the percentage or other formula and how collections are taken.
- Determine the expected payoff period. If payments vary with sales, ask how the contract estimates the repayment duration and what happens when sales are higher or lower than expected.
- Map payments against the business’s cash cycle. Compare due dates with when customers pay and when payroll, taxes, rent, suppliers, and other commitments fall due. Use the business’s own records rather than assuming a lender’s example fits.
- Stress-test a weaker period. Work out whether the business can make the required payments if receipts arrive late or fall below plan. For variable or sales-linked payments, ask the provider for written examples of how the payment amount changes.
The cadence can materially change the burden. FTC staff’s 2020 guidance describes daily or weekly repayment for some online financing. By comparison, the SBA says most 7(a) term loans are repaid with monthly principal-and-interest payments. These are descriptions of those financing contexts, not a promise that every online product or SBA loan follows one schedule.
Check whether the rate can change
Ask whether the offer’s pricing is fixed or variable. With fixed pricing, confirm what amount or payment is fixed and whether fees or payment dates can still change. With variable pricing, get the benchmark or index, the margin, how often the rate can adjust, and any limits or floors stated in the contract. Ask for an example showing how an adjustment would affect payment and total repayment; do not assume a current quote will remain unchanged.

The SBA says 7(a) rates may be fixed or variable, are negotiated between lender and borrower, and are subject to program maximums. Its current 7(a) page lists maximum variable-rate spreads by loan size as follows:
| 7(a) loan amount | Maximum variable-rate spread listed by SBA |
|---|---|
| $50,000 or less | Base rate + 6.5% |
| $50,001–$250,000 | Base rate + 6.0% |
| $250,001–$350,000 | Base rate + 4.5% |
| Above $350,000 | Base rate + 3.0% |
These are program-specific maximum spreads, not a promised rate for a particular borrower or a benchmark for every digital lender. The SBA page gives a maximum 7(a) loan amount of $5,000,000. Verify current program terms with the SBA and lender when applying, because program pages and terms can change.

Ask the lender to identify all charges in the written offer, where they appear in the contract, when they are due, and whether they reduce the amount deposited. If the provider uses a separate fee schedule, reconcile it with the payment schedule. Ask which party pays any program fee and whether the contract allows a lender-paid charge to be passed through to the borrower.
For SBA 7(a), SBA lender guidance says the lender pays the annual service fee and cannot pass that fee to the borrower, while the upfront guaranty fee may be passed through. These are specific SBA program rules, not general rules for all business financing. Confirm the current governing program materials and the amount applicable to the offer.

Identify any collateral requirement, security interest, or personal guarantee and read the provisions describing what they cover. A comparison of rates and payments is incomplete if one contract also places business assets or a personal guarantee at risk. If the contract language is unclear, ask the provider to explain it in writing before signing.

Review the payoff clause even if early repayment is not part of the current plan. Ask whether paying sooner reduces interest or fees, whether a fixed fee remains due, and whether there is a prepayment charge or discount. The SBA lender guidance describes a specific penalty for qualifying 7(a) loans with maturities of at least 15 years when 25% or more of outstanding principal is prepaid during the first three years: 5% of the prepayment in year one, 3% in year two, and 1% in year three. This rule is limited to the stated qualifying loans and must not be generalized to other SBA loans or business financing. Check current governing guidance for the loan under consideration.
Use SBA programs as a separate comparison, not a universal benchmark
An SBA program may be relevant if its eligibility, purpose, and application process fit the business, but SBA terms should not be used as a stand-in for the price of an online offer. The SBA’s current pages describe program-specific amounts, rates, fees, and repayment practices; the lender makes or negotiates the offer within applicable program rules.
SBA 7(a)
The SBA identifies 7(a) as its primary business loan program and lists a maximum loan amount of $5,000,000. Rates are negotiated between lender and borrower subject to program maximums and can be fixed or variable. Most 7(a) term loans use monthly principal-and-interest payments. These program limits and general practices do not promise a particular borrower’s rate, fee, approval, or schedule.
SBA microloans
SBA microloans are made through approved intermediaries, which make credit decisions and set rates and terms. The SBA page lists a maximum repayment term of seven years and eligible uses including working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery, and equipment. It describes a general interest range of 8%–13%; treat that as an indicative program-page range, not a personal offer, and confirm current terms with the intermediary.
When comparing either program with another offer, use the same worksheet: net proceeds, every required charge, total repayment, payment dates, rate behavior, collateral and guarantees, and early-payment terms. A program’s maximum, range, or typical schedule is not a substitute for the actual lender’s written offer.
A practical review before choosing an offer
- Collect complete documents. Obtain the offer, contract, fee schedule, and full repayment schedule for every candidate. Keep the provider’s written explanations of unfamiliar pricing terms.
- Normalize the funding amount. Record both the amount financed and the amount expected to reach the business account after deductions.
- Reconcile the price. Add scheduled payments and separate required charges. Confirm whether stated totals already include any fee so it is not counted twice.
- Compare annualized figures carefully. Record APR or estimated APR only with its stated assumptions and included charges. If one offer provides only a factor rate or flat fee, do not invent a conversion; compare the dollar schedule and ask for the provider’s calculation.
- Compare obligations, not just cost. Note payment amount, frequency, term, variable-rate mechanics, collateral, guarantees, and early-payoff provisions.
- Test affordability using business cash flow. Check ordinary and weaker periods against the specific due dates. Consider whether frequent or variable deductions leave enough cash for operating obligations.
- Resolve inconsistencies in writing. If the summary, schedule, and contract show different numbers, ask which terms control and request a corrected written version before agreeing.
Choose only after you understand both the total dollars the business must repay and when those dollars leave the account. A lower headline rate is not a better offer if fees, timing, or contract obligations make it more costly or less workable for the business.
