To open an HBL account, choose the application route and account that fit your residency, customer type and transaction needs; prepare the identity and supporting documents HBL requests; then submit the application and complete any follow-up verification. Requirements, limits and fees differ by product, so check HBL’s live application, the account’s Key Fact Sheet (KFS) and the latest Schedule of Bank Charges before applying.
Choose the right HBL application route
HBL offers digital applications and branch-based account opening, but the routes are not interchangeable. Start with your residency and applicant type, then check the product’s eligibility and restrictions.
| Route | Who it is for | How to apply | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital account | Eligible Pakistani residents. HBL lists categories including salaried and self-employed people, landlords, housewives, students, freelancers and minors; eligibility and documents vary by account. | Use the live digital application and follow its prompts. | Some locally opened digital accounts may require follow-up biometric verification. Check the specific product’s current KFS. HBL digital account information. |
| Asaan Account at a branch | New-to-bank resident Pakistani individuals aged 18 or older. | Apply at an HBL branch. | HBL states limits and remittance restrictions for this product. Ask the branch which supporting documents apply to your customer category. HBL Asaan Account. |
| Conventional Current Account | Individuals and non-individual entities. | Apply through HBL, including at a branch. | HBL lists account-specific balance and charge conditions. Individuals and entities have different documentation requirements. HBL Conventional Current Account. |
| Freelancer Digital Account | Freelancers applying through HBL’s dedicated digital route. | Use the freelancer application. HBL directs IT entities to a branch for a company account. | HBL states a two-working-day turnaround to open or decline an application; that is not a guarantee of approval. HBL Freelancer Digital Account. |
| Roshan Digital Account | Eligible non-resident Pakistanis and non-resident POC holders. | Submit an application remotely through HBL’s Roshan Digital route. | HBL says complete applications meeting its requirements are opened within 48 hours; document discrepancies may lead to requests for corrections or more information. What documents should you prepare?
There is no single checklist that applies to every HBL account. Prepare the items relevant to your chosen product and be ready to provide further information HBL requests under its policy.
- A valid identity document accepted for the account. Depending on the product and applicant, HBL lists CNIC/SNIC, NICOP or POC.
- Proof or source of income or funds if required for your product and customer category.
- Additional supporting documents HBL requests for its assessment.
For an individual Conventional Current Account, HBL lists an identity document, proof or source of income from the account holder and/or financial supporter, and other supporting evidence required under bank policy. For non-individual applicants, it lists identity documents for owners or directors, proof or source of income, and any other required supporting documents.
#1 Best Overall
Roshan Digital applicants should prepare scanned CNIC, NICOP or POC, a passport, evidence of non-resident status, and proof of profession and source of funds, as listed by HBL. Applicants for minor or entity accounts should check the particular product requirements rather than assume a standard individual checklist applies.
HBL’s terms effective January 1, 2026 say branch customers submit an account-opening form along with additional documents or information the bank requires. The terms give examples including attested CNIC/SNIC for local residents; NICOP/POC for overseas Pakistanis; and, for aliens, a passport plus valid Pakistani visa or other proof of stay and an ARC. These are examples, not an exhaustive list. HBL General Terms and Conditions.
How to apply for a local HBL account
- Select the product. Compare eligibility, account use, transaction restrictions and charges. If you are unsure whether Asaan or a conventional account suits your needs, ask HBL before submitting.
- Open the relevant application. For a digital account, use HBL’s live Apply Now flow; for a branch account, visit HBL and request the selected account’s application form. Follow the current application instructions rather than relying on a fixed sequence of online screens.
- Provide identity and supporting information. Enter the requested details and submit the documents required for your account and customer type. HBL may ask for additional information or evidence.
- Respond to HBL’s follow-up. Complete any verification or document correction HBL requires. For some digital current accounts, this may include biometric verification at a branch after activation; check the account’s current KFS for the applicable deadline and process.
- Review the account terms before using it. Confirm the account is open, understand its transaction limits and any balance condition, and check current service charges and debit-card terms.
What is different about an HBL Asaan Account?
HBL describes its Asaan products as current accounts for eligible new-to-bank individuals. Its product pages state a maximum account limit of PKR 3 million and a maximum monthly debit limit of PKR 1 million. HBL says inward remittances are allowed without a limit, while outward and commercial remittances are restricted. These limits and restrictions apply to the named Asaan products, not to every HBL account. Confirm the terms on the current application and KFS.
HBL says the digital Asaan Account’s first-year PAYPAK debit card is free, with subsequent charges governed by the prevailing Schedule of Bank Charges. Check the current schedule before relying on any fee or card-cost detail.

Not necessarily, but some local digital-account customers may need a branch follow-up. HBL’s July 2025 digital current-account KFS says biometric verification must be completed at a nearby HBL branch within 60 days of activation. It warns that a debit block applies if verification is not completed within that period, until verification succeeds. This condition is specific to the KFS-covered product; check the current KFS for your account rather than assuming it applies to every digital account.

HBL states that its Conventional Current Account does not pay profit. Its product page also gives a monthly average balance condition of PKR 40,000, with service charges under the prevailing Schedule of Bank Charges otherwise. These terms are specific to this account and may change; review the latest KFS and charge schedule before opening it.

How overseas Pakistanis can apply through Roshan Digital
HBL presents Roshan Digital Account opening as a remote process for eligible non-resident Pakistani individuals and non-resident POC holders. Submit the application with the identity, passport, non-resident-status, profession and source-of-funds evidence HBL lists. HBL says an application that is complete and meets its requirements is opened within 48 hours; if documents have discrepancies, it may request corrections or additional material. Treat this as HBL’s stated timeframe for qualifying applications, not a general account-opening guarantee.
Check the live terms before submitting
Account features, documentation, limits and charges can change. Before you apply, open the page and KFS for the exact HBL account you selected and review the current Schedule of Bank Charges. If a requirement is unclear—especially for a minor, freelancer, non-resident or business applicant—ask HBL to confirm the documents and any in-person verification needed for your case.
