How to Open a Business Bank Account: Documents, Steps, and What to Expect

To open a U.S. business bank account, choose an account and provider, gather personal identification and business records, confirm who must apply, then submit the application and complete the bank’s verification. The exact checklist varies by bank and business structure, so use your selected bank’s current requirements as the final authority.

When to open a business bank account

The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends opening an account “as soon as you start accepting or spending money as your business.” A dedicated account helps keep business and personal funds separate and can help with legal compliance and protection; having an account alone does not create or guarantee liability protection. The SBA’s business bank account guide discusses the timing and benefits.

Choose the account and provider

A business checking account is the usual starting point for receiving and spending operating money. Depending on the business, you may also need savings, a business credit-card account, or merchant services. Match the account to how you receive payments, pay bills, handle cash, and access support.

Compare providers using the costs and services that matter to your business:

  • Monthly maintenance fees, transaction fees, and any minimum-balance requirement.
  • Opening deposit requirements, which vary by provider and are not universal.
  • Interest rate, if the account pays interest, and any introductory offer or early-termination fee.
  • Cash deposit limits, branch and ATM access, online access, and customer support.
  • Services needed for payroll, bookkeeping integrations, or payments; confirm current features directly with the provider.

If you accept card payments, compare merchant-service costs separately, including discount rates, transaction charges, address verification (AVS) and ACH fees, and monthly minimums. A payment processor may provide payment functionality, but the SBA notes that a processor still needs a business checking account to receive funds. See the SBA’s comparison guidance.

Gather identification and business documents

There is no single checklist that applies to every bank or business. The federal Customer Identification Program rule sets minimum identity information banks must obtain, while each bank uses its own procedures and may ask for additional records. Start with the bank’s application checklist; these are common items to prepare:

  • Tax identification: an Employer Identification Number (EIN), or, for a sole proprietorship, a Social Security number (SSN) may be accepted.
  • Business records: formation documents, ownership agreements, and a business license, as applicable to your business.
  • Personal identification: identifying information and often a government-issued photo ID for the person applying and other people the bank asks to verify.
  • Business details: the business name, address, structure, and information about owners or people who control the entity, if requested.

Under the federal rule, a bank’s minimum identifying information for a customer includes name, address, and identification number; for an individual, it also includes date of birth. For an entity, the address may be its principal place of business, a local office, or another physical location, and a U.S. person’s identification number is a taxpayer identification number. The rule also requires risk-based procedures designed to give the bank a reasonable belief that it knows the customer’s true identity. Read Federal Reserve Regulation §1020.220.

Bank examples illustrate why it is important to check the specific provider’s list. Chase’s account-opening guide describes examples of photo IDs, tax identifiers, and business documents, with requirements that can depend on state and business circumstances. Bank of America’s sole-proprietor checklist is another provider-specific example and describes personal and business information it may request. Neither list is a nationwide rule.

Confirm who needs to apply

Your business structure affects which records establish the business and which people the bank may ask to identify or involve in the application.

  • Sole proprietor: The SBA and Bank of America’s example indicate that an SSN may be used instead of an EIN. Confirm the selected bank’s policy.
  • Corporation, partnership, or other entity: Be prepared to provide applicable formation or ownership records and information about people with ownership or control.

Before starting, ask the bank whether every owner or signer must participate, whether a controlling manager must provide information, and whether you need an appointment or an in-person visit. The SBA says applicants can begin online or at a local branch, but availability depends on the provider and circumstances. See the SBA guidance and Chase’s provider-specific guide.

Apply and complete the bank’s verification

  1. Review the bank’s current checklist. Confirm required documents, participating applicants, application options, and any opening deposit requirement directly with the bank.
  2. Submit the application. Apply online or at a branch if the provider offers those options, and make sure the business and applicant information matches the supporting records.
  3. Respond to verification requests. If the bank cannot resolve an identity or document issue using the information submitted, it may ask for additional information or another verification method.
  4. Wait for the bank’s decision. Approval and processing times depend on the institution and application; there is no guaranteed instant approval or universal completion time.

The federal rule requires banks to use risk-based procedures to form a reasonable belief that they know a customer’s true identity. Federal Reserve Regulation §1020.220 describes those requirements.

Be prepared to provide beneficial-owner details

A bank may ask who owns or controls the business. FinCEN’s CDD Rule FAQs, updated May 6, 2026, describe a February 13, 2026 order under which covered financial institutions may limit identifying and verifying beneficial owners to three circumstances: the entity’s first account at that institution; a later account opening when facts call the reliability of previously obtained information into question; or when needed under risk-based ongoing customer-due-diligence procedures. The FAQs also say a financial institution may choose to continue identifying and verifying owners at each new account opening. FinCEN states that whether an institution uses the order is within its discretion. Bring owner details if requested, and check the bank’s instructions. Read FinCEN’s CDD Rule FAQs.
