To move from India to Switzerland for more than 90 days, first establish the correct route—such as work, study or family reunification—with the authority for your intended canton. Indian citizens generally need a national visa for a long stay, and the visa process is subject to the canton’s authorization. A job offer alone does not authorize work. After arrival, register with your commune within 14 days; if you are moving for a job, register before starting work.

Choose your route before applying

Swiss entry and residence requirements depend on why you are moving, how long you intend to stay and your circumstances. The Embassy of Switzerland in India distinguishes short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period from national-visa applications for stays longer than 90 days. Long-stay examples include study, family reunification and marriage in Switzerland. The long-stay application is subject to authorization by the migration authority responsible for your intended place of residence.

For a stay exceeding three months, Swiss public guidance says foreign nationals need a residence permit. The competent canton handles the relevant authorization and determines the route and supporting evidence. Permit labels used for third-country nationals include L, B, C, Ci, G, F and N, but they represent different circumstances; they are not categories every newcomer may freely choose among.

Reason for moving What to establish before travel
Employment The prospective employer generally applies to the cantonal authority for work authorization. A national visa may also be required for entry after authorization.
Study Apply under the student national-visa route and confirm the residence authorization and documents with the canton for the intended place of study.
Family reunification Confirm that your relative’s status allows sponsorship and that the family meets the applicable conditions, including suitable accommodation.
Another long-stay purpose Ask the intended canton which permit and visa process applies to your specific circumstances; the routes above are not exhaustive.

The Embassy of Switzerland in India publishes separate national-visa checklists for students, family reunification and people who already have authorization to enter Switzerland. Use the checklist for your actual route and check whether the canton requires additional documents. The Embassy’s guidance, checked on October 7, 2026, gives an approximate processing time of 8–12 weeks and warns that it can vary considerably by canton and case. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed decision date.

How to get a Swiss work permit from India

Indian nationals are subject to Switzerland’s third-country rules for employment. The prospective employer normally starts the application with the cantonal employment or migration authority and generally has to show that no suitable candidate could be recruited in Switzerland or an EU/EFTA state. Admission is limited and aimed at highly qualified candidates. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) describes the general profile as university or other higher-education graduates with several years of professional experience; whether a particular applicant and job qualify is decided through the relevant process.

  1. Have the employer confirm the route. Ask the prospective employer which canton will handle the application and what documents it needs from you.
  2. Wait for the required decisions. Cantonal authorities screen the application; approved applications go to SEM for federal review. Where a visa is required, the visa-authorization process follows the necessary approvals.
  3. Travel only when authorized. A job offer is not a work permit or entry visa. Use written confirmation from the employer and authorities to plan travel and avoid treating an offer as permission to work.
  4. Register after arrival, before work begins. The local registration deadline and worker-specific restriction are set out below.

Register with your commune after arrival

Register with the communal authority where you live within 14 days of arrival. If you are an employee, you must complete registration before taking up work. Registration is a local arrival requirement, not a substitute for the visa or residence and work authorizations you need before travelling.

Ask the commune or canton how to book an appointment and which evidence to bring. Federal guidance does not establish one registration document checklist that applies to every permit type and municipality, so confirm the current requirements for your destination rather than relying on a generic list.

Housing: secure an address and check family requirements

Identify the intended city and canton early enough to investigate current listings, lease terms and what proof of accommodation the local authority requires. The official guidance covered here does not establish current city-by-city rents, deposit norms, apartment availability or a universal landlord-document list; verify those locally rather than assuming a national figure or rule.

Accommodation is also an immigration condition in some family-reunification cases. Swiss guidance says a sponsor must have housing large enough for the family under Swiss standards. It does not prescribe a single apartment size in the guidance summarized here, so do not assume that a particular number of rooms automatically meets the test.

Can you bring your spouse and children?

For third-country residents, Swiss guidance describes family reunification for a spouse or registered partner and unmarried children under 18, subject to the sponsor’s permit status and the applicable conditions. Switzerland must recognize the marriage or registered partnership. The sponsor must have adequate accommodation and must not rely on social assistance; a self-employed or unemployed sponsor must show sufficient financial resources. The canton decides the individual case.

For the specified spouse situation in which the spouse cannot communicate in the local national language, the guidance lists at least oral A1 ability or enrollment in a language course. Check with the canton which language and evidence requirements apply to your case; do not assume that this condition applies identically to every family member or situation.

Arrange compulsory health insurance

Swiss health insurance is compulsory. The federal work guidance says to insure yourself and your family no later than three months after arrival or beginning work. Confirm the applicable start date and coverage details for your status with an insurer or official guidance, and arrange coverage for each family member.

Before you leave India: practical sequence

  1. Define your purpose and destination. Identify whether the move is for work, study, family reunification or another long-stay reason, and choose the intended canton.
  2. Confirm the permit route. Contact the responsible cantonal authority or use the relevant official process. Do not select a permit type from its label alone.
  3. Prepare the route-specific application. Follow the current Embassy checklist that matches your case and check for canton-specific supporting documents.
  4. Wait for authorization and any required visa. Allow for variable processing and avoid making irreversible travel or employment plans on the assumption that approval is automatic.
  5. Arrange housing and arrival logistics. Check local rental listings and commune instructions; if family reunification is involved, account for the accommodation condition.
  6. After arrival, register within 14 days. Employees must register before starting work.
  7. Complete health-insurance arrangements within the stated period. Confirm the deadline for your individual status and include family members where applicable.

Rules and administration can differ by canton, and the Embassy’s visa estimate is not a guarantee. For a move planned from India in 2026, verify the latest forms, evidence and deadlines with the Embassy and the canton responsible for your intended Swiss residence.
