First identify exactly what is restricted: deposits, trading, a particular blockchain network, your account, or all withdrawals. If the exchange still enables a withdrawal of your stablecoin, send it only to a destination that supports the same token on the same network. If withdrawal is disabled, check the exchange’s account notice and contact its authenticated support; do not assume that a trading or deposit restriction also blocks withdrawals, or that every restriction has the same solution.
For a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) that provides custody under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), the European Commission’s interpretation is that it must return the same type of crypto-asset the client held when requesting its return. It cannot require you to accept euros or a different token instead. That rule does not guarantee that a particular network or account will have an operational withdrawal route at every moment.
What kind of restriction is on your account?
Read the exchange’s official notice and the current withdrawal screen for the specific stablecoin. An exchange may restrict one service or route without restricting all the others. A headline about a token being delisted, or an email saying deposits are closed, is not enough to establish that withdrawals are unavailable.
- Trading or deposits are closed: Check whether the token still appears in the withdrawal screen and whether a network can be selected. A restriction on buying, selling or depositing does not by itself tell you whether you can withdraw.
- One network is paused: The token may have more than one network option, but use another only if both the exchange and your receiving destination explicitly support the exact token on that network.
- Your account is under review or frozen: This is different from a general network pause. Follow the exchange’s identity or compliance process and ask support what information is missing and whether withdrawals are affected.
- The provider is leaving a market or winding down: Follow the account-specific notice and any stated deadline. Do not assume that a general announcement guarantees a particular transfer route or time to withdraw.
Stablecoin service restrictions can also relate to MiCA compliance. On 17 January 2025, ESMA said national competent authorities should ensure CASP compliance concerning non-compliant asset-referenced tokens (ARTs) and e-money tokens (EMTs) as soon as possible and no later than the end of Q1 2025. That supervisory statement helps explain why an exchange might restrict an offering or trading service; it does not establish that withdrawals of every affected stablecoin are blocked everywhere.

Check whether a direct withdrawal is available
Use the exchange’s signed-in account notice and current withdrawal page rather than an old help article or a general announcement. Record the exact ticker, selected network, minimum amount, fee, limits, pause status and any deadline shown for your account. These details are exchange-specific and can change.
- Open the exchange’s official withdrawal page for the stablecoin in your account.
- Check which network options are currently enabled, along with the displayed fee, minimum, limits and any withdrawal status or deadline.
- At the receiving wallet or other provider, verify that it accepts that exact token on the same network. Check the token or contract details where the destination provides them; a matching ticker alone is not enough.
- Enter the destination address carefully and review the asset and network on both sides before confirming. If the exchange offers a test or small transfer and the fees and minimums make that practical, you may use it to check the route before sending a larger amount.
- Keep the withdrawal confirmation and transaction details. If the transaction does not arrive as expected, contact the receiving provider with those details rather than sending a second transfer blindly.
A transfer sent on an unsupported network or to a destination that does not support the token may be lost or difficult to recover. Exchange-independent guidance cannot confirm that any particular route is enabled for your account.

What MiCA says about returning the asset
MiCA’s custody rules matter when a CASP provides custody. In ESMA Q&A 2320, the European Commission’s answer, updated 18 February 2026, interprets Article 75(6) to mean: “The words ‘return crypto-assets held’ in Article 75(6) should be understood as meaning that the same type of crypto assets as the crypto-assets held at the time of the client’s request must be returned.” In other words, a covered custodian cannot make you accept euros or a different crypto-asset instead of the same type of asset you asked it to return.
The Commission’s answer allows a conversion to be offered if you request it at the time of withdrawal. Any conversion service remains subject to applicable authorisation and execution-policy requirements. ESMA Q&A 2550, also updated 18 February 2026, says a CASP cannot sell crypto-assets that are never transferable and let clients collect only a fiat equivalent; a fiat option may be offered, but transfer of the purchased crypto-assets must remain possible.

These interpretations do not mean that every stablecoin can be withdrawn immediately on every network. A technical pause, account-level review, unsupported network or other account-specific condition may still affect a route. Ask the provider to explain the particular restriction rather than treating a conversion offer as proof that direct return is impossible or available.
If direct withdrawal is unavailable, take these steps
- Contact support through the authenticated account. Use the exchange’s official in-account channel or another contact method it identifies as official. Avoid sharing passwords, recovery phrases or private keys with support.
- Ask what is restricted. Request confirmation whether the hold is temporary, network-specific, token-specific or account-specific, and whether it affects withdrawals as well as deposits or trading.
- Ask about a same-token route. Ask whether withdrawal of the same stablecoin is expected to resume, whether another network is supported by both the exchange and your intended destination, and what minimums, fees or deadlines apply.
- Ask what information is needed. If the provider requires an address declaration, proof of ownership or another compliance check, request its exact requirements and how to submit them securely.
- Keep a record. Save the notice, support case number and replies. If a deadline is stated, confirm what actions remain available before it passes.
- Evaluate any conversion offer separately. Under the Commission’s interpretation of MiCA, conversion must be your choice at the time of withdrawal, not a compulsory replacement for returning the same type of asset. If you consider it, check the conversion rate, fees, timing and withdrawal route before agreeing.
Do not misrepresent who controls a destination address, use a VPN to evade geographic or account restrictions, or send assets to an address you do not control. Those actions can create additional compliance, access or loss problems rather than resolving a hold.

Travel Rule checks for a self-hosted wallet
Transfers can require information under the EU’s Transfer of Funds Regulation and related EBA guidance. For a transfer to a self-hosted address, EBA guidance says a CASP must obtain and retain information about the address and identify the transfer. When the transfer amount exceeds EUR 1,000, the CASP must assess whether the customer owns or controls that address.
The guidance does not prescribe one universal proof method. An exchange may ask you to complete a declaration or another ownership check, and its process may differ from another provider’s. Answer accurately and ask the exchange what it accepts if you are unsure; do not claim control of an address that belongs to someone else.

Compare the available routes
The right route depends on what the exchange currently enables and what the destination accepts. No route is guaranteed merely because it is listed here.
| Route | What must be true | Recipient and verification | Custody after transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Withdraw to an existing self-hosted wallet | The exchange enables withdrawal of the same token on a network supported by the wallet; check current fees, minimums and limits. | You control the destination address. The exchange may request self-hosted address information and an ownership or control assessment for a transfer above EUR 1,000. | You are responsible for the wallet’s access credentials and recovery. |
| Transfer to another authorised CASP | The exchange enables the route, and the receiving CASP accepts the exact token on the same network. | Confirm the receiving account and address instructions directly with that CASP. Transfer information checks may apply. | The receiving CASP holds the assets under its own terms and applicable requirements. |
| Choose a conversion, then withdraw | The exchange offers conversion and a withdrawal route for the resulting asset. Conversion should be your choice at the time of withdrawal. | Check the resulting asset, destination support, rate, fees and any applicable verification. | Custody depends on where the converted asset is sent. |
Before moving assets to another provider, independently check that it is authorised for the relevant country in the ESMA register and that it currently accepts the exact token and network. Authorisation alone does not establish that a provider supports your asset or will accept a particular transfer.
What to consider before using self-custody
A self-hosted wallet puts control of the address with you, but it also makes you responsible for protecting the credentials that control the assets and for keeping any recovery information safe. Losing access can mean losing access to the funds. A hardware wallet is one optional way to hold credentials; it does not unlock an exchange withdrawal or override a restriction. Check that any wallet you choose supports the exact stablecoin and network before withdrawing.
If the exchange is unauthorised or withdrawing from the market
On 23 June 2026, ESMA advised clients of unauthorised providers to check the provider against the ESMA register, contact it first if they experience difficulties, and consider transferring assets to an authorised CASP or a self-hosted wallet. ESMA cautioned that users of unauthorised CASPs do not benefit from MiCA safeguards, including client-asset protection.

MiCA Article 64(8) requires a CASP whose authorisation is withdrawn to establish adequate procedures for the timely and orderly transfer of clients’ crypto-assets and funds to another CASP. The specific process and any deadline depend on the provider’s circumstances and notice. If an account is affected, rely on the provider’s official instructions and seek qualified legal or financial advice where the amount or dispute warrants it.
