To move an NFT to a different wallet address, send it from the current wallet to the destination’s public address and approve the on-chain transaction. First confirm that the destination supports the NFT’s network and asset type, and keep enough of the network’s fee currency in the sending wallet. A transfer to the wrong address generally cannot be undone.
If you only want to use the same wallet in a different app, importing its recovery phrase or private key may restore access to the existing address—but it does not move the NFT to a new address, and sharing or exposing those credentials puts the wallet at risk.
Decide whether you need a new address or just a different app
These are different actions:
- Use the same wallet in another app: A compatible app may let you access the existing self-custodial wallet using its recovery phrase or private key. The NFT remains associated with the same blockchain address. OpenSea explains private-key export for accessing a wallet elsewhere in its private-key export guidance.
- Move the NFT to a new wallet address: Send it to the new address in an on-chain transaction. This is the appropriate route if the original credentials may be exposed: using those same credentials in another app does not secure them.
Never give anyone your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key to help with a transfer. For a move to a new address, the recipient needs only the public address.
Before you transfer, check the NFT, destination, and fees
Confirm the NFT and its network
Check the NFT’s item details and the network it is on. The destination wallet must support that network and the NFT’s asset type. Transfer steps and compatibility can differ by chain, token standard, wallet, and custodial service; not every NFT or platform follows the same process.

Get the destination address right
Copy the public address from the receiving wallet and verify it carefully before approving. OpenSea’s documented transfer flow also accepts an ENS name; if you use one, confirm that it resolves to the intended destination before signing.
Leave fee funds in the sending wallet
Transfers incur network fees, often called gas. The amount varies with the network, transaction, and conditions at the time, so there is no reliable fixed fee to quote. Keep enough of the required fee currency in the sending wallet for the transfer. If you are moving several assets, transfer the fee currency last so you do not strand later transactions without funds.

If you suspect the sending wallet is compromised, treat the situation as a security incident. MetaMask warns that an attacker may sweep newly added gas before you can use it. Its account migration guidance covers asset inventory and transfer sequencing.
How to send the NFT using OpenSea
OpenSea’s help article, published March 12, 2026, describes transferring from an NFT’s item page or from the NFTs tab on your profile. Labels can change, so follow the current prompts in the interface and in your wallet.

- Open the NFT’s item page, or go to your profile and select the NFTs tab.
- Choose the NFT and select the transfer or send action.
- Enter the destination wallet’s public address or an accepted ENS name. Confirm the destination details before continuing.
- Review the transaction in OpenSea and in your wallet. Check the destination, network, and fee request, then approve only if they match your intent.
- Wait for the transaction to complete. OpenSea’s documented flow offers a confirmation, and you can check the transaction on the relevant blockchain explorer.

Verify receipt—and what to do if the NFT is not visible
Look for the marketplace confirmation, then check the transaction on the explorer for the NFT’s network to confirm that it completed and went to the intended address. If the NFT does not appear in the receiving wallet’s display, that alone does not prove the transfer failed. Check the on-chain transaction first, then consult the receiving wallet’s NFT display and network-support instructions.

What can go wrong
- Wrong address or network: A completed send may be irreversible. OpenSea warns, “Once it’s been sent, you won’t be able to undo it.” Confirm the destination and network before approving.
- Not enough fee currency: The transaction may not proceed without the required network fee. Keep funds available for each remaining transfer; during a broader migration, move gas tokens last.
- Credentials exposed: Do not share or enter your recovery phrase or private key in response to an unsolicited request. If the original credentials may be compromised, creating a fresh wallet and moving assets is safer than importing the same credentials into another app, but added gas in a compromised wallet may be swept.
- Unsupported NFT or custodial withdrawal: A wallet’s ability to receive a particular NFT depends on its network and asset support. Custodial services may have their own withdrawal procedures. Check the NFT, chain, and platform’s current instructions before acting.
Is a hardware wallet required?
No. A hardware wallet can be used as the destination if you want keys held by a hardware device, but it is not necessary to transfer an NFT. Whatever wallet you choose, confirm that it supports the NFT’s network and asset type, and back up its credentials securely.
