Generally, no—not completely or reliably across crops and locations. Biofertilizers can improve nutrient availability and may support reduced fertilizer use in a well-matched crop and soil, but the evidence supports using them as part of integrated nutrient management rather than as a universal one-for-one substitute for mineral fertilizers.
What biofertilizers do—and what they do not do
Biofertilizers are preparations containing live or latent microorganisms applied to seed or soil. Depending on the organism, they may fix atmospheric nitrogen, help mobilize or solubilize nutrients such as phosphorus, or produce growth-promoting substances. These biological processes can make nutrients more available to plants; they are not the same as applying a known quantity of a mineral nutrient. The outcome depends on microbial activity in the crop and soil. FAO’s overview of biofertilizers and its plant-nutrition publication describe these roles.
What the yield evidence says
A 2018 global meta-analysis of 171 peer-reviewed publications reported these average yield responses by climate. They are pooled results across studies, not guaranteed outcomes for an individual farm or proof that a corresponding amount of fertilizer can be removed. Schütz et al., “Improving Crop Yield and Nutrient Use Efficiency via Biofertilization”, indexed by FAO AGRIS, also found that response varied with soil conditions.
| Climate category | Pooled yield response reported |
|---|---|
| Dry | +20.0 ± 1.7% |
| Tropical | +14.9 ± 1.2% |
| Oceanic | +10.0 ± 3.7% |
| Continental | +8.5 ± 2.4% |
The analysis found generally small biofertilizer yield responses where soil phosphorus was low. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi had greater success in soils with low organic matter and neutral pH. These findings underline why a pooled average should not be treated as a farm-specific forecast or fertilizer-replacement rate.

- PLANT STRESS SHIELD – Unique desert‑adapted strains recharge plant nutrient pathways, helping crops shrug off pH swings, heat waves, drought spells, and transplant shock while keeping foliage vibrant and stress‑resistant all season, preserving soil biodiversity for long‑term garden health.
- INDOOR‑TO‑OUTDOOR VERSATILITY – Granular formula integrates seamlessly with seed starting soil, raised‑bed blends, coco, and any similar setups, treating up to 20 plants per 100 g pouch and leaving no dust cloud or messy slurry behind—great for seedlings, houseplants, veggies, and young trees alike.
- CLEAN & ECO‑RATED – OMRI Listed and ECOcert approved granules blend directly for a well-rounded soil treatment, delivering living beneficial mycorrhizal fungi for soil without synthetic additives or harsh chemicals. Negligible amounts of heavy metals won’t pass to your plant so it won't harm kids, pets, and pollinators—verified by science-backed quality labs.
When partial fertilizer substitution may be possible
Integrated nutrient management combines nutrient sources—including mineral fertilizers, organic materials, and biofertilizers—to meet crop needs. FAO gives a pulse-production example in which farmyard manure, 50% of recommended NPK, and Rhizobium inoculation are used together; it describes this specific practice as saving 50% of chemical fertilizer. That figure belongs to the example, not to pulses everywhere or to other crops. See FAO’s technical resource on plant nutrient management.
Some nitrogen-fixing organisms can contribute nitrogen when paired with a compatible crop, and nutrient-mobilizing microbes may help plants access nutrients already present in soil or other nutrient sources. Those contributions may support a locally appropriate reduction in selected inputs, but they do not establish that the crop’s full nutrient requirement is covered.

Why results vary
Effectiveness depends on the crop, the microbial product, and local conditions. FAO identifies several factors that can limit performance, while USDA Agricultural Research Service reviews ongoing questions about efficacy and compatibility.
- Crop and location fit: A microorganism suited to one crop or growing environment may not work as well with another.
- Soil and weather conditions: Native microbial competition, poor aeration, high temperature, soil moisture, acidity, salinity or alkalinity, and toxic elements can affect performance.
- Product viability and handling: Microbial products can have short shelf lives and may require careful storage and application. Carrier materials also present limitations.
- Field consistency: A 2024 review record identifies limited and inconsistent field efficacy among commercialization challenges. Fadiji et al. (2024), indexed by FAO AGRIS, addresses formulation challenges.
A USDA ARS-hosted review states: “Microbial inoculants cannot replace chemical fertilizers now or in the immediate future.” Its practical framing is integrated input management, with attention to compatibility and inconsistent efficacy. The USDA ARS publication record dates to 2017.

How to decide whether to use one
- Match the organism to the crop. Check that the product is intended for the crop and use in question; for example, Rhizobium inoculants are crop-specific and used with compatible legumes.
- Check local suitability. Consider soil conditions and local crop guidance rather than assuming a result from a different climate, soil, or trial applies to your field.
- Follow the product label. Pay close attention to storage, timing, and application instructions so the microorganisms remain viable and are used as directed.
- Use soil testing and local nutrient recommendations before changing fertilizer rates. Treat an inoculant as a possible part of a nutrient plan, not a reason to remove fertilizer without assessing crop needs.
