For reaching the top of your iPhone screen, turn on Reachability at Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Reachability. It temporarily brings the top of the screen within easier thumb reach. For typing, use the separate one-handed keyboard option; for other needs, AssistiveTouch, Zoom, or a compatible grip may help.
Reach the top with Reachability
Reachability is the best first option when you can hold your iPhone comfortably but cannot reach controls near the top of the display. Apple describes it as a way to bring the top of the screen down for one-handed use in portrait orientation. It is built into iOS and requires no purchase. Apple Support explains Reachability and its gestures.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Reachability and turn on Reachability.
- Use the gesture for your iPhone model: on a Face ID iPhone, swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen; on a Home button iPhone, lightly double-tap the Home button.
- Tap the upper half of the screen to return to the full-screen view.
If VoiceOver is on, Apple documents a different gesture: swipe up from the bottom with one finger, then, without lifting that finger, swipe down. Availability of accessibility features can vary by country, region, and language, as Apple notes in its accessibility overview.
Make typing easier with one hand
The one-handed keyboard is separate from Reachability: it shifts the typing layout toward one side, but it does not move other app controls within reach. Apple’s keyboard accessibility guide confirms that iPhone has a “type with one hand” option, but the page does not give the steps to activate it. Because the keyboard menu can vary by iOS version, consult the current on-device keyboard options rather than relying on an unverified sequence.

If you need larger keys instead of a keyboard shifted to one side, rotate the iPhone to landscape. Apple says this provides a larger keyboard in many apps; app support and layout can vary.
Use AssistiveTouch for alternate controls
AssistiveTouch can put frequently used controls and actions in a movable onscreen menu. It is useful if particular gestures are difficult or you want shortcuts for selected actions, but the floating button takes up some display space. Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide describes its controls and customization options.

- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and turn it on.
- Customize the top-level menu or assign actions to a single tap, double tap, or long press so the menu contains controls you actually use.
- For quicker access, add AssistiveTouch to Accessibility Shortcut. After configuring the shortcut, triple-click the side button or Home button to use it.
Choose Zoom for visibility, not reach
If the difficulty is seeing or selecting small items, rather than physically reaching them, consider Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. Apple’s Zoom instructions describe full-screen or resizable-window magnification. Smart Typing can switch to Window Zoom when a keyboard appears. Magnification can make small details easier to inspect, but it also means less content fits in view; it does not bring distant screen areas closer to your thumb.

A phone grip or grip-and-stand may make a one-handed hold feel more secure, but fit depends on the phone and case. Apple’s Hikawa Grip & Stand for iPhone is described as an adaptive, MagSafe-compatible grip that also works as a stand. Check compatibility with your specific iPhone and case before buying; stock, price, and supported models may change. A grip is optional and does not replace Reachability when the problem is reaching the top of the screen.
