You can make money selling a domain name you already own by listing it for a fixed price, inviting offers, or putting it up for auction. A sale is not guaranteed: your net proceeds depend on the price, marketplace and transfer fees, and the cost of keeping the domain registered while you wait. Compare the selling routes and check the domain’s renewal terms and legal status before listing it.
What selling a domain name means
Domain-name sales are aftermarket transactions: the seller transfers a name that is already registered to a buyer. This differs from registering an available name and paying its registration fee. GoDaddy describes its aftermarket as a service for buying and selling previously registered names through an online auction (GoDaddy 2025 Annual Report).
A listing creates an opportunity to sell, not a dependable income stream. The available platform information does not establish typical sell-through rates, median profits, or a reliable formula for valuing an individual domain. Treat automated estimates and marketplace performance claims as context—not as a forecast of what your name will earn.
Choose how to sell
Set a fixed Buy Now price
A Buy Now listing gives buyers a stated price they can accept without negotiating. It offers price clarity, but choosing a price still requires judgment. Afternic says setting a Buy Now price can increase the chance of selling by “up to 65%”; its reviewed seller page does not provide the underlying methodology or independent confirmation, so this should not be treated as an expected result for your domain (Afternic seller page).

Invite offers
A Make Offer listing lets buyers propose a price, which you can accept, reject, or negotiate. It leaves the final price open, but requires you to evaluate offers and respond. Sedo offers both Buy Now and Make Offer listings (Sedo Domain Marketplace Agreement).
Use an auction
An auction can let buyers compete, but it does not guarantee a particular price. Sedo offers auctions and says a direct auction has a $59 setup fee; an auction started after receiving an offer through Push to Auction does not incur that setup fee. Check Sedo’s current fee page before listing, because terms can change (Sedo fee page).

Consider lease-to-own
Afternic offers lease-to-own, which lets a buyer pay over time while the seller receives recurring payments during the agreement. This can make a purchase more accessible, but it changes the timing of payments; it does not establish that the seller will earn more overall or that the buyer will complete all payments (Afternic seller page).
Compare marketplaces and calculate your net
Fees depend on the marketplace, how a buyer finds the listing, and how the domain is configured. The rates below are the platforms’ published terms reviewed in 2026; recheck the live pages before committing, since fees and plan details may change.

| Route | Published seller fee | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Afternic Buy Now | 30% with Afternic Boost or 25% with Afternic Basic by default | Pointing names to GoDaddy Aftermarket nameservers reduces the stated rates to 20% with Boost or 15% with Basic. Afternic states a $15 minimum commission. Source: Afternic seller page. |
| Sedo direct marketplace sale | 10% for a Buy Now sale when the domain is parked or uses Sedo’s sales lander; 15% for other direct marketplace sales described on the fee page | The 15% category includes Make Offer or auction sales and certain Buy Now sales without parking or a sales lander. Source: Sedo fee page. |
| SedoMLS network sale | 20% | Applies to sales through SedoMLS. Source: Sedo fee page. |
| Sedo external transfer service | 3% of gross sale price, subject to minimum fees based on TLD category | This is for a sale agreed outside Sedo’s marketplace, not a universal marketplace commission. Other registrar or bank fees may apply, and marketplace commission can still apply if the parties had active Sedo negotiations for the listed domain. Source: Sedo fee page. |
To estimate what you would keep, subtract the platform commission, any applicable transfer or payment fees, and registration or renewal costs paid while holding the name. For example, on a hypothetical $1,000 sale with a 15% commission and $20 in other applicable fees, the amount before carrying costs would be $830. This is arithmetic, not a forecast: your actual fee route, transaction costs, and renewal schedule may differ. Check your registrar’s renewal price and the domain’s TLD terms.
When comparing routes, check more than the headline commission:
Rank #4
- Total fees: account for minimum commissions and any transfer, payment, or auction charges.
- Buyer reach: distribution networks may expand where a listing appears, but do not promise a sale.
- Listing controls: compare fixed pricing, offers, auctions, and any lease-to-own option.
- Setup requirements: a lower fee may depend on parking the domain, using a sales lander, or changing nameservers.
- Transaction support: confirm who coordinates payment and transfer, and what steps remain your responsibility.
Understand what marketplace reach figures do—and do not—show
Afternic’s seller page says its network has more than 100 distribution partners and 125 million monthly domain-purchase search queries. It also says Afternic Boost can contribute to a 10% increase in portfolio sales performance. These are Afternic’s platform claims, not independent measures of likely sales for an individual seller; search queries are not the same as unique buyers (Afternic seller page).
Sedo says its partner search tool covers more than 22 million domains and that it has more than 650 partners for domain promotion. Those are Sedo’s platform figures, not a guarantee of audience or a sale for your listing (Sedo Partner Program). GoDaddy reported approximately 81 million domains under management as of December 31, 2025—about 21% of approximately 387 million registered domains worldwide, with the worldwide figure attributed in its report to VeriSign’s latest Domain Name Industry Brief. That is company-scale context, not evidence of aftermarket sales volume (GoDaddy 2025 Annual Report).
Prepare the listing and protect the transaction
- Confirm authority to sell. Check that you control the registration and are authorized to transfer the domain.
- Check renewal costs and TLD restrictions. Review the registrar’s renewal schedule and the registry rules, pricing, and transfer requirements for the domain’s extension. Sedo advises users to research annual registration fees and notes that TLD terms can vary (Sedo Domain Marketplace Agreement).
- Review third-party rights. Avoid listing a name that trades on another party’s trademark or could infringe other rights. A marketplace listing does not establish that a domain is legally safe to sell or use.
- Describe the domain accurately. Verify any traffic, revenue, or other statistics you include. Sedo’s agreement assigns sellers responsibility for listing content and the accuracy of statistics, whether measured by Sedo or otherwise (Sedo Domain Marketplace Agreement).
- Define what is included. State whether the transaction covers only the domain or also a website, content, or other assets. Sedo’s transfer service manages domain-transfer steps for marketplace transactions; additional web pages or assets bundled with a domain must be arranged between the parties.
- Follow the platform’s payment and transfer process. A transaction platform can coordinate parts of the sale, but read its current rules and complete the required transfer steps. Do not assume every platform validates every seller claim or domain feature.
Can you earn money without selling your own domain?
Sedo’s Partner Program describes an alternative: publishers can embed domain search, use banner ads, or offer a domain-sales status tool. Sedo says partners earn 15% of Sedo’s transaction fee for a successful domain sale—not 15% of the domain’s gross sale price. Confirm current eligibility and terms with Sedo before joining (Sedo Partner Program).
Is a paid appraisal worth considering?
Sedo lists individual domain appraisals for $99. That is an optional paid service, not a guarantee that a buyer will pay the appraised amount or that you will realize that value after fees and carrying costs (Sedo fee page).
