You can make money on YouTube through advertising, YouTube Premium, fan payments, Shopping, and brand partnerships—but views do not translate into a guaranteed payment. The route available to you depends on your location, channel eligibility, content, and the monetization features you enable.
How do I make money on YouTube?
Most YouTube income falls into two groups: revenue from features available through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and money earned through arrangements outside YouTube, such as brand partnerships. YPP features let eligible creators earn when viewers watch monetized content, pay for channel benefits, support a live stream, or shop. Each feature has its own requirements and availability.
YouTube does not publish a universal per-view payment or typical monthly income figure in the official guidance cited here. Earnings depend on the revenue source and the circumstances of the channel, content, viewers, and transactions. A view count alone cannot tell you what a creator will earn.
Advertising and YouTube Premium
Creators who meet the standard YPP eligibility requirements can earn a share of revenue from ads on eligible long-form videos and Shorts. Ads are not guaranteed to appear on every upload: content must meet advertiser-friendly requirements, and turning ads on does not ensure that they will serve. YouTube Premium can also contribute revenue when Premium subscribers watch a creator’s content, subject to the relevant requirements and monetization module. Memberships and viewer payments
Channel memberships offer recurring monthly payments in exchange for perks such as badges, emoji, or members-only benefits. Super Chat and Super Stickers let viewers pay to highlight a message or display an animated sticker during eligible live streams and Premieres. Super Thanks is a one-time viewer purchase that highlights a comment on eligible long-form videos or Shorts. Eligibility and availability vary by feature and location. Shopping and products
Eligible creators may connect a store and showcase their own products. Some eligible creators can also tag products from other brands through YouTube Shopping’s affiliate feature. This is a commerce route, not a requirement that a creator buy products to participate; feature and regional availability apply. YouTube’s earning guidance describes these options.
Brand partnerships
A creator may work with brands as a separate income source. A partnership’s payment and obligations depend on the agreement; YouTube’s official guidance does not establish a standard sponsorship fee or guarantee that a channel will receive offers. How many subscribers do you need to get paid on YouTube?
There are two important YPP threshold levels. The lower level can provide earlier access to eligible fan-funding and Shopping features in supported regions; it does not, by itself, unlock the higher-threshold ad-revenue route.

The thresholds and feature distinctions are set out in YouTube’s feature guidance and YPP overview and eligibility rules. Shorts-feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold.
Thresholds are not approval or a promise of earnings
Meeting a threshold makes a channel eligible for review; it does not guarantee acceptance, access to every feature, or revenue. For standard YPP eligibility, YouTube also requires the channel to be in a supported country or region, follow monetization policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable two-step verification, have access to advanced features, and link or set up an AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube reviews channels and continues to check compliance.
How to choose the right monetization route
Choose based on how your audience engages and what you can reliably offer—not on views alone. A channel can use more than one route when eligible.

When assessing a route, check its eligibility threshold, audience action, supported format, regional availability, and any policy or delivery obligations. For sponsorships, review the actual agreement rather than assuming a typical rate.
What can prevent or limit YouTube earnings?
Policy, originality, and rights
Monetized content must comply with YouTube’s monetization policies, Community Guidelines, copyright and rights-clearance rules, advertiser-friendly content guidelines, and relevant commerce policies. YouTube describes monetizable content as original and authentic. Review the channel monetization policies before building a business around content you do not own or have permission to use.
Content-level ad suitability
YPP membership does not mean every video or Short will receive full ad monetization. YouTube may review individual uploads against advertiser-friendly requirements, so a channel’s overall status and a specific video’s ad suitability are separate considerations.

Location and feature-specific rules
Supported countries, local law, channel attributes, and feature-specific requirements can affect access. A threshold does not automatically enable every monetization option; check the feature’s current availability for your location in YouTube Studio and the applicable official guidance.
Inactivity and taxes
YouTube says it may turn off monetization for a channel that has not uploaded a video or posted to the Posts tab for six months or more. Creators may also owe tax on YouTube earnings in their country of residence; tax obligations depend on jurisdiction and individual circumstances. Check your eligibility in YouTube Studio. Compare your subscriber count and qualifying activity with the applicable YPP threshold, and confirm that your country and channel meet the other prerequisites.

Apply when eligible and complete the account requirements. Follow YouTube’s YPP application flow, link or set up AdSense for YouTube, and wait for channel review. Meeting the numerical threshold alone does not guarantee acceptance.

Accept the relevant monetization modules and enable features. After joining, accept the terms for the features you want and turn them on where available. Check each feature’s separate eligibility conditions.
