The basic workflow is to choose a design, print it, attach it to the magnetic material, trim it, check the finish, and work out your costs before listing it. This is a practical low-equipment starting point, not a guarantee of sales or profit.
1. Choose a simple magnet to make
Begin with a flat photo or original-design magnet. A straightforward format keeps the materials and assembly manageable while you learn how your chosen paper, adhesive, and magnetic sheet work together. 2. Gather materials for the basic method
- A printed photo or design.
- Adhesive magnetic sheet material intended for craft or photo-magnet projects.
- Scissors or a cutter suitable for the material.
- Optional laminate or another protective finish, if it works with your chosen materials.

3. Prepare and print the image
Decide the finished magnet’s size and shape before printing. Crop or arrange the image to fit, allowing for the material you will trim away. For a small product, check that important text and details will remain legible at the final size.
The cited craft method describes printed photos but does not prescribe printer settings, paper, or a specific image resolution. Choose settings appropriate to your printer and paper, and make a sample print if you need to check color or sizing before preparing a batch.

4. Attach the image and trim it
- Cut out the printed image roughly, if needed, so it is easy to position.
- Expose the adhesive on the magnetic sheet and place the image carefully, smoothing it from one side to the other to limit wrinkles or trapped air.
- Trim around the image with scissors or a suitable cutter. Keep the edge even and avoid cutting into the printed area.
- If you are adding a laminate or protective layer, confirm that it adheres cleanly to your materials and does not interfere with the finished item.
Follow the instructions that come with your specific sheet and finish; the sources do not establish a universal adhesive application method or drying time.
5. Inspect each finished magnet
Before offering an item for sale, check the image, backing, and edges. Try it on the type of surface you expect customers to use and confirm that it holds as intended. This is a useful quality-control check, not a substitute for any safety assessment that applies to your product.

- Look for lifted corners, bubbles, wrinkles, loose layers, or rough cuts.

6. Calculate costs and create an accurate listing
Work out your costs before setting a price
There is no universal price or profit figure established for handmade magnets. Calculate your own costs per order, including image and magnetic materials, packaging, your labor, shipping, and marketplace charges. Account for waste and any time spent preparing designs, packing orders, and handling customer service. Then test whether buyers respond to the price you set; demand and margins depend on the product, audience, and costs.
Etsy’s official fee information lists a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount in the designated listing currency, alongside listing, payment-processing, and potentially advertising or other fees. Payment processing and some charges depend on location or service, and fees can change, so check the current Etsy fees page when calculating your costs.

Make the listing clear and policy-compliant
Etsy’s listing setup covers photos or video, category, item details, price, quantity, and shipping and processing information. Use clear images of the actual product, describe its size and materials accurately, and state what the buyer will receive. Etsy says items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller under its policies; mass-produced resale is not allowed in the handmade category. Read the current Etsy handmade policy and listing instructions before publishing.
Etsy says it does not require its sellers to have a business license, but sellers must follow laws that apply to their business. That statement is specific to Etsy and does not determine what permits, tax registrations, or other requirements apply where you live. For sales to the European Economic Area or Northern Ireland, Etsy’s listing guidance notes that traders may need manufacturer and safety information under the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR); consult current official guidance for your circumstances.

Check which safety rules apply to your magnet
In the United States, magnet rules depend on the product’s design and intended use; the standard should not be treated as automatically covering or exempting every decorative refrigerator magnet. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states: “The CPSC published a final rule in the Federal Register (87 FR 57756) that establishes a mandatory safety standard for magnets: Safety Standard for Magnets (16 CFR part 1262).” The rule applies to subject magnet products manufactured after October 21, 2022, with scope and exclusions described in the agency’s magnet guidance.
For qualifying loose or separable magnets in a covered subject magnet product that fit entirely within a small-parts cylinder, the CPSC standard’s flux-index limit is less than 50 kG² mm². This is a scoped technical requirement, not a specification for every magnet sheet or finished craft magnet. If you plan to sell in the United States, assess your product’s design, intended use, regulatory scope, and any applicable testing or certification obligations rather than relying on its decorative appearance alone.
