How to Make a Website for a Small Business in 9 Steps

A practical nine-step guide to building a small-business website, including platform choices, domain ownership, essential pages, costs, SEO, accessibility, testing, and maintenance.

Most small businesses can launch a professional website without custom coding. Start with the business outcome—not the platform—then choose the simplest setup that supports your main action: a call, quote request, booking, visit, or purchase.

A service business may need only a focused five-page site, while a product business needs catalog, checkout, inventory, shipping, and payment tools. The nine steps below take you from planning to launch and ongoing maintenance, while highlighting the costs and ownership decisions that can become expensive later.

Before you begin: decide what kind of website you need

Your business model should determine the website’s features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Business type Core requirements
Brochure or service business Services, proof, contact details, and a clear inquiry or quote request.
Local business Address or service area, hours, phone number, directions, reviews, and a Google Business Profile.
Appointment-based business Booking calendar, availability, confirmations, and cancellation policies.
Portfolio or consultancy Work samples, case studies, process, credentials, and an inquiry form.
Ecommerce business Products, checkout, payments, inventory, shipping, tax, returns, and customer support.
Restaurant or hospitality business Menu, reservations or ordering, location, hours, and accessibility information.
Membership, course, or subscription business Accounts, recurring payments, restricted content, and support.

A one-page website can be enough for an early-stage service business if it clearly states the offer, service area, credibility, contact method, and next action. Do not choose an ecommerce platform merely because it is popular if you mainly need leads or bookings.

  • FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
  • AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals

  • STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth

Step 1: Define the goal and target customer

Write a brief before opening a website builder:

  • Who is the primary customer?
  • What problem do you solve?
  • Where do you serve customers?
  • What is the main conversion: call, email, quote request, booking, visit, or purchase?
  • Which three results will you monitor—for example, calls, bookings, quote requests, or completed orders?

Complete this sentence: “After visiting this website, I want a prospective customer to ___.”

Expected result: a one-sentence brief and one primary call to action. A site can be technically impressive yet financially ineffective if visitors cannot tell what to do next.

Step 2: Choose the right platform

There is no universal best platform. Compare the total cost, operational burden, and likely next 12–24 months of requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Need Likely fit Why Main drawback
Fast, low-technical setup Wix, Squarespace, or GoDaddy Website Builder Hosting, HTTPS, templates, and many business tools are bundled. Less portability and deep customization.
Design-led service or portfolio Squarespace or Wix Polished templates and built-in business features. Complex workflows may need add-ons.
Product-first ecommerce Shopify Catalog, checkout, inventory, payments, shipping, and sales channels. Subscription and payment-related costs can grow.
Maximum flexibility and content control WordPress Large ecosystem and extensive customization. You must manage—or pay someone to manage—hosting, updates, backups, security, and plugins.
Unusual workflow or integration WordPress, Webflow, or a professional developer More control over structure and integrations. Higher setup and maintenance burden.

Hosted builder versus self-hosted WordPress

A hosted builder generally combines hosting, SSL/HTTPS, updates, and some security in one subscription. It is usually easier for a nontechnical owner to maintain, but moving the site later may be difficult and advanced features may require a higher plan or paid extension.

Self-hosted WordPress uses software from WordPress.org, but the software is only one part of the cost. You separately need hosting, a domain, themes or plugins, backups, security, maintenance, and possibly professional support. Do not describe it as automatically cheaper.

WordPress.com is a separate managed hosting and subscription service. It is not the same purchasing or maintenance model as self-hosted WordPress.

Check whether your choice includes:

  • Hosting and HTTPS.
  • Domain connection and transfer options.
  • Forms, booking, payments, and email integrations.
  • SEO controls, redirects, sitemaps, and image settings.
  • Mobile editing and responsive layouts.
  • Backups, exports, migration, and data ownership.
  • Contributor permissions and customer support.

Step 3: Choose and register a domain

Your domain is the web address, such as example.com. Hosting stores and serves the website, while SSL/HTTPS encrypts the connection between the visitor and the site. Hosted builders typically bundle hosting and HTTPS; a self-hosted WordPress site usually does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a short, pronounceable domain that is easy to say and type. Prefer the business name when it is legally appropriate. Avoid confusing spellings, unnecessary hyphens, numbers, obscure abbreviations, and trademarks owned by another business. A .com is familiar in the U.S., but another extension can work if it is credible and memorable.

Register the domain in the business owner’s account—not solely in an agency’s or employee’s account. Enable registrar security and auto-renewal. Keep the domain separate from the builder when portability and ownership are especially important.

  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Expected result: the business controls the address and can connect it to a compatible platform. Losing a domain can interrupt the website, business email, traffic, and local listings.

Step 4: Plan the pages and navigation

Draft the site map before selecting a template:

Home
├── Services / Products
├── About
├── Reviews / Case Studies
├── FAQ
└── Contact / Book / Shop

Remove pages with no distinct purpose. Add pages that answer important customer questions.

Minimum page set

Home

Explain what you do, who you serve, where you operate, the primary benefit, and the next action. Include trust signals, a short service overview, and contact details.

Services or products

Give each important service or product a meaningful section or page. Explain the customer problem, what is included, who it is for, the process or outcome, pricing or pricing guidance where possible, common questions, and the next action.

About

Introduce the operator, relevant experience, values, credentials, licenses, affiliations, or guarantees. Real photographs are generally more useful than generic stock images.

Contact

Include phone, email, form, address, hours, service area, response-time expectations, and directions where relevant. Provide an alternative contact method in case the form fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proof

Use genuine testimonials, reviews, case studies, a gallery, client logos, certifications, or before-and-after work. Do not invent testimonials or imply that every customer will receive a particular result.

Policies

Depending on the business, location, audience, and data practices, consider privacy, terms, refunds, shipping, returns, cancellation, accessibility, and cookie disclosures. A generic template is not legal advice, especially for regulated or national and international businesses.

Step 5: Prepare content and trust signals

Write for customer questions rather than leading with the owner’s biography. Every major page should answer:

  • What is being offered?
  • Who is it for?
  • Where is it available?
  • Why should the visitor trust this business?
  • What should the visitor do next?

Prepare your copy, image list, prices or pricing approach, policies, calls to action, testimonials, certifications, licenses, guarantees, and social or review links before building. Verify every phone number, address, opening hour, price, and service claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use plain language, descriptive headings, real business details, and meaningful image alternative text. Compress images without making them visibly poor. Show prices or starting prices when hiding them creates unnecessary friction. Local businesses should state their genuine service area.

AI can accelerate a first draft, but review every sentence. Replace generic language, fact-check claims, and ensure the copy reflects the actual business.

Step 6: Build the site and apply consistent branding

Choose a responsive template and configure the logo, colors, fonts, header, footer, navigation, buttons, image treatment, and mobile layout. Reuse consistent sections so visitors do not have to relearn the interface on every page.

Keep the design restrained. A legible site that makes the offer obvious is more valuable than an elaborate site that hides the call to action. Check the phone layout separately; a desktop preview does not prove that the mobile version works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Add contact, booking, payment, accessibility, and policy essentials

  • Connect the contact form to a monitored notification email and test actual delivery.
  • Add booking availability, confirmations, reminders, and cancellation rules where needed.
  • For ecommerce, configure the payment processor, shipping, tax, inventory, returns, and customer emails.
  • Use a reputable payment processor and avoid storing card data unnecessarily.
  • Consider a domain-based email such as [email protected]; Google Workspace is one option, but it is an additional cost rather than a website requirement.
  • Link privacy and other relevant policies.
  • Add spam protection without making legitimate inquiries difficult.

Accessibility checklist

Accessibility is a quality and inclusion requirement, not merely an SEO tactic. WCAG 2.2 is the current W3C Recommendation, published October 5, 2023. It includes criteria covering focus visibility, target size, dragging alternatives, consistent help, redundant-entry reduction, and accessible authentication. See the W3C WCAG overview and WCAG 2.2 changes.

  • Use sufficient text and background contrast.
  • Make navigation and forms keyboard-accessible with visible focus states.
  • Use a logical heading hierarchy and labels for form fields.
  • Use descriptive link text and alternative text for meaningful images.
  • Caption or transcribe important video.
  • Do not convey information by color alone or autoplay audio.
  • Make touch targets usable and separated.
  • Write error messages that explain how to recover.
  • Check menus, accordions, booking tools, and payment flows—not just ordinary pages.

No builder, plugin, or accessibility widget automatically guarantees legal compliance. Regulated businesses or businesses facing material accessibility risk should obtain qualified, jurisdiction-specific advice.

Step 8: Set up basic SEO and Google visibility

SEO is not a one-time submission and no checklist guarantees rankings. Google says its Search Essentials make content eligible to appear in Search, but do not guarantee crawling, indexing, or ranking.

Before launch:

  • Give each page a clear, descriptive title and useful meta description.
  • Use descriptive, stable URLs and crawlable text.
  • Link related pages internally.
  • Use descriptive image filenames and alt text.
  • Confirm mobile usability and HTTPS.
  • Create or confirm an XML sitemap if the platform provides one.
  • Remove duplicate, placeholder, and thin pages.
  • Redirect old URLs when replacing an existing site.
  • Add relevant structured data where appropriate.

Verify the site in Google Search Console. It can help verify ownership, inspect URLs, monitor indexing, and identify problems. Use the URL Inspection tool on the homepage and important service or product pages.

For an eligible local business, claim and complete the Google Business Profile. Keep the business name, address, phone, hours, category, service area, photos, and website consistent across the profile and site. A website does not replace an accurate Business Profile, good reviews, or clear local information.

You can try:

site:example.com

This may show whether Google has indexed some pages, but it is not a complete index report.

Performance targets

Use real-user performance as a practical quality check. Google’s “good” Core Web Vitals targets are:

Metric Measures Good target
LCP Loading performance ≤ 2.5 seconds
INP Responsiveness < 200 milliseconds
CLS Visual stability < 0.1

These are useful targets, not a guarantee of higher rankings. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance explains the thresholds, while its page-experience guidance covers secure delivery, mobile usability, intrusive interstitials, and overall usability.

Step 9: Test, launch, and maintain the website

Pre-launch checklist

  • Preview every page on a phone and desktop.
  • Test multiple browsers and a slow cellular connection.
  • Submit the contact form and confirm the message arrives.
  • Check confirmation and error messages.
  • Test booking, checkout, payments, shipping, and tax settings where applicable.
  • Click every important link, menu item, phone number, map, and social link.
  • Check spelling, prices, hours, address, service area, and policy links.
  • Test keyboard navigation and use an automated accessibility checker.
  • Confirm the domain points to the correct site and HTTPS works.
  • Remove passwords, “coming soon” pages, placeholder text, and accidental noindex settings.
  • Confirm analytics and Search Console.
  • Make a backup or export where supported.

For a simple public-site check, you can use:

nslookup example.com
curl -I https://example.com

A live page will commonly return a 200 status. A 301 or 308 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS can be normal; not every redirect is an error.

After launch

  • Regularly: monitor form submissions, calls, bookings, orders, and broken links.
  • Monthly: review Search Console indexing and search queries; update hours, prices, services, images, and customer questions.
  • Quarterly: review backups, test important forms and checkout, check domain and email renewal settings, and apply platform or plugin updates.
  • After major changes: test mobile layouts, redirects, analytics, policies, and key conversion paths again.

How much does a small-business website cost?

There is no responsible single price without assumptions. Build a first-year and renewal budget using these categories:

Cost category What to include
Domain Registration, renewal, privacy or security options, and additional domains if needed.
Platform or hosting Builder subscription or WordPress hosting; distinguish promotional, monthly, annual, and renewal prices.
Email Business mailbox or collaboration suite if needed.
Templates and extensions Premium themes, plugins, booking tools, forms, storage, or integrations.
Payments Card-processing, platform, transaction, or payout fees.
Content and creative work Photography, copywriting, logo, translation, or product images.
Maintenance Updates, backups, security, troubleshooting, and content changes.
Professional help Strategy, setup, migration, accessibility review, custom development, or ongoing support.

Vendor prices change by country, tax, billing period, promotion, and plan. For example, pages viewed in August 2026 showed Wix paid tiers labeled Light, Core, Business, and Business Elite, with displayed U.S.-reference annual-billing equivalents of $17, $29, $39, and $159.77 per month; the page stated that prices vary by location and exclude applicable taxes. Squarespace displayed website and commerce tiers with different transaction-fee structures. Shopify displayed Basic at $39 per month when paid monthly or $29 per month on annual billing, Grow at $105 monthly or $79 annual-equivalent, and Advanced at $399 monthly or $299 annual-equivalent, with payment-card rates beginning at 2.9% + 30¢ USD for Basic under applicable conditions.

These are page-specific reference prices, not universal renewal quotes. Check the official Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, WordPress.com, and GoDaddy Website Builder pages and checkout for the current U.S. price, billing commitment, taxes, included features, and renewal terms.

DIY, hire a professional, or use a hybrid?

DIY is reasonable for an informational or modestly transactional site with supplied content, ordinary integrations, and an owner willing to maintain it.

Best Value
HP 14 inch Laptop, 2027 Edition, Intel N150 CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 1TB Cloud Storage, Long Battery Life, Win 11 with Microsoft 365
  • 【Powerful Performance】Equipped with an Intel N150 CPU, featuring up to 4.4 GHz, ensuring efficient and powerful multitasking capabilities.
  • 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.

Hire help when the website drives significant revenue, ecommerce or fulfillment is complex, custom integrations are required, accessibility risk is material, the owner lacks maintenance time, or a migration could damage an established site.

A hybrid approach is often financially sensible: pay for strategy, information architecture, setup, migration, redirects, or an accessibility review, then handle ordinary content updates internally.

Common mistakes that cost businesses money

  1. Choosing a template before defining the conversion goal.
  2. Using a free subdomain when a professional custom domain is affordable.
  3. Putting every service on one vague page.
  4. Hiding the phone number or contact option.
  5. Publishing fake testimonials, unsupported claims, or placeholder business details.
  6. Assuming a desktop preview proves the mobile site works.
  7. Failing to test whether the contact form actually delivers messages.
  8. Forgetting domain renewal or leaving ownership with an agency.
  9. Installing too many WordPress plugins, increasing conflicts and maintenance risk.
  10. Treating SEO as keywords plus a sitemap submission.
  11. Assuming HTTPS alone makes a site secure; it encrypts the connection but does not replace strong passwords, updates, backups, access controls, or payment security.
  12. Assuming an accessibility widget guarantees an accessible site.
  13. Launching without mapping old URLs and redirects during a redesign.
  14. Blocking Google accidentally with passwords, noindex, bad robots rules, or broken canonical settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a small-business website without coding?

Yes. Hosted builders provide templates, hosting, HTTPS, and common tools without requiring code. Coding or professional help becomes more valuable for unusual workflows, complex ecommerce, migrations, and custom integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a blog?

No. A blog is optional. Create one only if you can publish genuinely useful material that answers customer questions or supports your sales process; a neglected blog is not a substitute for clear service or product pages.

Can I build the site for free?

A free plan can work for a temporary landing page, but it may use a platform subdomain, display branding or ads, limit storage and forms, and make migration harder. Price the domain, upgrades, email, add-ons, taxes, and renewal before deciding.

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

Eligible local businesses should generally claim and complete one because it manages information shown in Google Search and Maps. It does not replace the website, and businesses without a local presence may not qualify.

Can I sell products later?

Usually, but check the platform’s upgrade path, product limits, payment fees, shipping and tax features, exports, and migration options before choosing. A simple service builder may become restrictive as catalog and fulfillment requirements grow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should own the domain and website account?

The business owner should control the domain registrar account and have administrator access to the website, email, analytics, Search Console, payment processor, and Business Profile. An agency can receive delegated access without holding the only credentials.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
