Short answer: Canva’s widely reported 300% price increase was a targeted 2024 repricing of some legacy Canva Teams subscriptions—not a permanent blanket increase for every customer. Canva later preserved original pricing for existing early adopters, while new customers now choose among Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Canva’s AI can be worth paying for when it accelerates high-volume, branded content production, but AI alone is unlikely to justify the cost for occasional users.
What the 300% Canva price increase actually was
In September 2024, some five-person Canva Teams customers were reportedly told that their annual price would rise from $119.99 to $500. The dollar increase was $380.01. Mathematically, that is a 316.7% increase and a new price approximately 4.17 times higher than the old one. Coverage commonly rounded it to “300%.”

Some affected customers were reportedly offered a first-year transition price of $300. The change applied to certain older Teams subscriptions, not universally to every Canva account, every country, or every plan.
Canva said the product had expanded substantially since Teams launched. Its explanation pointed to Visual Suite development, collaboration and brand-management tools, and investment in Magic Studio and other AI features. Fortune also reported Canva’s position that its pricing had remained unchanged for four years despite that expansion (Fortune; TechCrunch).

That distinction matters. Canva was not claiming that customers were paying only for image generation. The repricing was associated with a broader team-content platform that included shared assets, templates, brand controls, approvals, publishing workflows, and AI-assisted creation.
Did Canva ultimately implement the increase?
Not in the simple form suggested by the headline. Following customer backlash, Canva said it would preserve the original pricing for existing early Canva Teams adopters. Its pricing promise says current early users can remain on their existing pricing for their existing team. Fast Company also reported CEO Melanie Perkins saying Canva had reverted the decision after community feedback.
“Reverted” does not mean every account received identical treatment. Your price can depend on your country, currency, taxes, seat count, renewal date, and whether you changed or canceled the plan. Before switching, check your Canva billing page and save a copy of the current renewal details.

Canva Teams is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades. Existing Teams customers remain on their current plan unless they switch or cancel. New features exclusive to Business are not automatically added to legacy Teams accounts. Canva Business is now the route for new teams (Canva pricing).
Canva has also described Business as costing $20 per person per month for new sign-ups, with no seat minimum. Because the annual and monthly offers, geography, taxes, and checkout terms can differ, confirm the total price on your account before subscribing (Canva Business announcement).
What Canva’s AI features do in practice
Canva’s AI is not one feature with one level of usefulness. It spans several kinds of work:
- Writing: Generate, rewrite, summarize, or adapt copy.
- Images: Create images, remove or replace backgrounds, erase objects, and expand images.
- Design production: Generate layouts, presentations, and variations, then resize them for different formats.
- Video and animation: Assist with motion, video concepts, and other audiovisual content.
- Localization: Translate content and adapt it for different audiences.
- Data and marketing: Turn data into visual content and support advertising or marketing insights.
- Newer workflows: Canva’s 2025 AI announcements added Canva AI, Canva Code, and AI capabilities connected with Canva Sheets and interactive content.
Canva says Magic Studio products have been used more than 16 billion times since their 2023 launch. That is a company-reported usage figure, not independent evidence that each use produced valuable work (Canva’s AI announcement).

Current plans do not provide simply unlimited AI. Canva’s pricing page estimates that allowances vary by plan and task complexity. Its examples include up to 200 Standard or 20 Premium AI uses for Free users; up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium, or 20 Ultra uses for Pro; and up to 4,000 Standard, 400 Premium, or 40 Ultra uses for Business, depending on the usage mix. Allowances are shared, and higher-tier generations can consume capacity faster.
AI can reduce production work—but it does not replace a designer
Canva’s AI is most valuable when the goal is to produce a fast, acceptable first draft or many variations. It can help a small team turn one campaign idea into social posts, presentation slides, resized graphics, and internal communications without moving between several applications.
It is less reliable for pixel-perfect art direction, complex typography, consistent characters or product details, advanced retouching, and work requiring sophisticated color or layout control. Generated copy can contain factual errors or unsupported claims. Generated images can include distorted text, incorrect objects, or inconsistent branding.

Canva itself warns users to review AI outputs (Canva AI). The practical value proposition is therefore speed and accessibility, not the complete replacement of professional judgment, editing, or accountability.

Who may find Canva worth paying for
Likely good fits
- A small marketing team producing many assets every week.
- A business without an in-house designer.
- A team that needs shared templates, brand kits, permissions, approvals, and centralized assets.
- An organization already using Canva for presentations, documents, social posts, video, print, and internal communications.
- Users who would otherwise pay separately for stock media, lightweight video editing, presentation software, scheduling, and AI tools.
- Teams that benefit from keeping AI, brand assets, editing, and collaboration in one workspace.
Who should not pay mainly for Canva AI
- Occasional users creating only a few designs each month.
- Solo users who do not need premium assets, brand kits, scheduling, or substantial storage.
- Professional designers already using Adobe, Affinity, Figma, or specialized tools.
- Teams likely to hit pooled AI allowances.
- Organizations with strict requirements for data handling, content provenance, or generative-AI approval.
- Users who already receive comparable AI features through another subscription.
How to calculate whether Canva pays for itself
Do not divide the subscription price by the number of AI prompts. A prompt is not necessarily a finished, useful asset. Instead, calculate the value of completed work:

− rework and review costsFor example, estimate the number of finished assets your team produces each month, the realistic hours saved per asset, and the internal value of those hours. Then add subscriptions or contractor costs Canva genuinely replaces. Subtract time spent correcting inaccurate AI copy, rebuilding poor layouts, reviewing outputs, and managing unused seats.
A plan is more defensible when Canva saves substantial production time or replaces several tools. It is harder to justify when the only reason to upgrade is occasional experimentation with generative features.

Legacy Teams customers should compare before switching
An existing Teams subscriber may have a better deal than a new customer because early-adopter pricing can be grandfathered. Switching to Business may add features, but it could also eliminate the legacy price or change the included allowances.

Before changing plans, compare:
- Your current annual renewal price, including taxes and seat count.
- The Business price for the same number of users.
- The AI allowance and which tools consume it.
- Brand kits, approvals, permissions, storage, and collaboration features.
- Included third-party products or services, where available.
- Cancellation terms and whether you can return to the old plan.
Do not assume that canceling or upgrading preserves your old eligibility. Canva’s promise concerns current early adopters and existing teams, and account-specific treatment should be confirmed directly in billing.

There is no universal winner. Canva is strongest when a team values speed, templates, brand consistency, and cross-format publishing. Adobe is stronger for deep professional editing. Figma is stronger for product and interface work. Affinity is better suited to users seeking traditional design control.
Important privacy and rights questions
Do not treat “AI included” as a blanket guarantee that every output is commercially safe or that every organization’s data requirements are satisfied. Review the terms that apply to the specific feature, plan, and organization.

Separate questions include whether customer content is used in a design, how creator content is used to improve AI features, whether third-party model providers are involved, and what enterprise controls are available. Canva says it supports its creator community and uses creator content to improve AI-powered features; that statement should not be generalized into a claim about all customer content or every AI workflow (Canva AI).
Bottom line
The historical 300% figure was a targeted 2024 Teams repricing that Canva later softened for existing early adopters. It was not a universal, permanent 300% increase for all Canva customers.
Today, Canva can be worth the money for high-volume teams that use it as a central content operating system—especially when brand management, collaboration, premium assets, publishing, and AI all replace meaningful labor or multiple subscriptions. Canva Pro may make sense for a solo professional who already values those workflow features.
But AI alone is rarely a sufficient reason for occasional users, established professional designers, or teams that will not use their pooled allowances. Judge the subscription by useful finished work and time saved, not by the number of generations the plan advertises.
