If your PAN–Aadhaar linking request fails because your name contains initials or other details do not match, first compare the records held by the two authorities. The Income Tax Department’s guidance is to correct the name, phone number or date of birth in either the PAN or Aadhaar database so the details match. For a PAN correction, its 2026 procedure specifically says to enter the expanded name when Aadhaar contains initials; the Aadhaar name will be printed on the PAN card.
Why initials can cause a PAN–Aadhaar mismatch
Linking depends on matching demographic details in the PAN and Aadhaar records. An initial in one record and a full name in the other can therefore prevent validation. The mismatch may also involve a phone number or date of birth. Compare the details in the underlying records rather than relying only on what appears on the physical cards. The Income Tax Department lists the mismatch and directs users to correct either record so both match: Link Aadhaar help.
Choose which record to correct
Use the record that is inaccurate as the starting point. The Department points PAN holders to Protean or UTIITSL for PAN corrections and to UIDAI for Aadhaar updates. Follow the relevant authority’s current application instructions and provide supporting documents; do not expand an initial or alter a name without documentation that supports the change.
- Correct PAN: Use the PAN correction route if the PAN record is wrong and Aadhaar has the correct details. The Department’s PAN information page lists the available service-provider route: PAN services and information.
- Correct Aadhaar: Use UIDAI’s update route if Aadhaar is wrong and PAN has the correct details. Check UIDAI’s current requirements for the specific update before applying.
How to enter a name with initials on a PAN correction application
The Income Tax Department’s 2026 PAN correction procedure addresses this case directly: if the Aadhaar name contains initials, enter the expanded name in the application’s name field (S. No. 1 A). The procedure also says the Aadhaar name will be printed on the PAN card. Use the expansion supported by your documents, and check the application instructions for any category-specific rules. The procedure states that initials in the first and last names are not allowed for exempt categories. See the official PAN correction procedure.

Check status, correct the records and retry linking
- Check whether PAN and Aadhaar are already linked. On the Income Tax Department e-filing portal, use the pre-login Link Aadhaar status option with your PAN and Aadhaar, or check status after logging in. The portal also allows both registered and unregistered users to submit a linking request, including without logging in. The Department’s Link Aadhaar service instructions describe the request and status routes.
- Compare the records. Check the name, phone number and date of birth held in each database, then identify which record needs correction.
- Apply through the relevant authority. Use Protean or UTIITSL for a PAN correction, or UIDAI for an Aadhaar update. For a PAN correction involving initials in the Aadhaar name, enter the expanded name as the 2026 procedure directs.
- Submit or retry the linking request. Use the e-filing portal’s Link Aadhaar facility and check status there. If you have paid the linking fee but the portal has not verified it, the Department’s instructions say to wait four to five working days before trying the request again.
- Ask about biometric authentication if online linking still fails. Contact a PAN service provider to confirm the designated centre, current instructions and charges before visiting.
What to do if online linking still fails
The Income Tax Department identifies biometric-based authentication at dedicated PAN service-provider centres as a route when linking cannot be completed online. Its instructions say to bring your PAN, Aadhaar and a copy of the fee challan, and to pay the centre’s applicable biometric authentication charge. Confirm the centre’s current process and fee with the provider before travelling. The Department does not say that an OTP will resolve every initials-related mismatch.
Who is required to link Aadhaar, and what happens if PAN is inoperative
The Income Tax Department says individuals allotted PAN on or before 1 July 2017 who are eligible to obtain Aadhaar are required to intimate their Aadhaar number, subject to exemptions. Its listed exemptions cover residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya; non-residents under the Income-tax Act; people aged 80 or more at any time during the previous year; and people who are not Indian citizens. The Department notes that exemptions may be changed by later notifications, so check its current guidance for your circumstances.

A separate deadline applies to PANs allotted using an Aadhaar enrolment ID: the Department says holders had to link using the actual Aadhaar number by 31 December 2025. For those who did not meet that deadline, PAN became inoperative from 1 January 2026, except for notified exempt categories. This is a special rule, not a general deadline for every PAN holder.
According to the Department, while PAN is inoperative, tax refunds are not paid, refund interest is not payable for the specified period, and higher tax deduction or collection rates may apply under the cited provisions. It says these consequences continue until PAN becomes operative. The Department also states that the fee to make PAN operative by intimating Aadhaar is ₹1,000. Check the current official guidance before acting, since rules and portal instructions can change.
