A June 22, 2026 report later put Valve’s announced U.S. starting prices at $1,049 for the 512GB model and $1,349 for the 2TB model. That makes the old estimate useful as historical context, not as a guide to today’s price.
What did Linus Tech Tips estimate the Steam Machine would cost?
In November 2025, Linus Sebastian estimated a price of “$699 USD, if there are no changes in the market.” Video Games Chronicle reported the estimate after Linus Tech Tips built a PC using components chosen to approximate the Steam Machine’s announced specifications. It was an estimate based on a comparison build, not a confirmed Valve price. Video Games Chronicle
The build calculations help explain how the estimate was reached. Linus Tech Tips put the cost at about $602 using low historical component prices. At prices current at the time, a similar build could cost about $910 at retail, or about $813 with less expensive brands. Linus then estimated that Valve might sell the machine for roughly $700, taking into account direct-to-consumer sales and potentially lower component sourcing costs. These were reported estimates for that comparison, not a market-wide price survey.
What prices were later reported for the Steam Machine?
Windows Central reported on June 22, 2026 that Valve announced four U.S. configurations. The prices below are those reported at that date; check Valve’s current regional store page for live availability and checkout pricing. Windows Central

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Configuration | Reported U.S. price |
|---|---|
| Steam Machine, 512GB | $1,049 |
| 512GB Steam Machine with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| Steam Machine, 2TB | $1,349 |
| 2TB Steam Machine with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
Against the reported base prices, the earlier $699 estimate is $350 below the 512GB configuration and $650 below the 2TB configuration, using simple subtraction. It should not be described as the confirmed launch price or as the machine’s current price.
Why was the estimate not an official Valve price?
Valve’s November 2025 announcement introduced the Steam Machine as part of a new Steam hardware lineup and gave a 2026 launch window, but did not establish a price. Valve’s announcement The $699 figure came from Linus Tech Tips’ own comparison-build analysis. Valve’s pricing goal, as quoted by Video Games Chronicle, was “if you build a PC from parts and get to basically the same level of performance, that’s the general price window that we aim to be at.” That describes a target relative to comparable PC performance, not a specific price commitment. GameSpot also reported Linus Sebastian saying he had no confirmed price and understood Valve to expect a PC-like price rather than a console-style price subsidized by game sales. He recalled suggesting $500 as a console-style price and perceived an unfavorable response in the room. That is Linus’ account of a conversation, not a formal Valve statement. GameSpot
How should you judge whether the Steam Machine is worth its price?
A price comparison is more useful when it considers what the configuration offers, not just the headline number. A June 2026 PC Gamer review describes the Steam Machine as a compact living-room gaming PC running SteamOS, with a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 six-core/12-thread CPU, semi-custom RDNA 3 graphics, 16GB DDR5 system memory, 8GB GDDR6 VRAM, and either 512GB or 2TB of storage. Treat those specifications as the review’s account and check Valve’s product page for definitive current details. PC Gamer

- Upfront price and storage: Compare the configuration you would actually buy. The reported base prices differ by storage capacity, and controller bundles cost more.
- Performance per dollar: Compare gaming performance with a PC at a similar total price. A parts list alone does not settle the value question; the whole system and its use matter.
- Size and setup: A compact living-room machine may suit someone who values a small footprint and a straightforward TV setup more than a larger DIY PC.
- SteamOS and controller: SteamOS integration and a controller bundle may add convenience for a Steam-focused setup. PC Gamer highlighted form factor and integration as advantages while raising price and performance-per-dollar concerns; those are reviewer judgments, not universal outcomes.
What the $700 figure means now
The $699 number explains what Linus Tech Tips thought might be possible in November 2025 under its assumptions about component costs and Valve’s sourcing. The later reported U.S. prices were substantially higher. For a purchase decision, use current regional pricing and compare the storage and bundle you want against similarly priced alternatives, while weighing the Steam Machine’s compact design and SteamOS experience.
