How to Invest ₹2.5 Crore for Steady Retirement Income Without Running Down Your Savings

₹2.5 crore cannot promise one fixed monthly income. Build your retirement plan from the after-tax spending gap, then combine liquid reserves, eligible income products and diversified growth while accounting for limits, taxes, inflation and sequence risk.

₹2.5 crore does not translate into a guaranteed monthly income by itself. The sustainable amount depends on your after-tax spending gap, pension and other income, age, health risks, investment horizon, taxes, liquidity needs and whether preserving a legacy is important. Build the plan from the cash you need each month, then match different parts of the corpus to near-term spending, predictable income and long-term growth.

India Post currently displays 8.2% a year for the Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS), paid quarterly, and 7.4% a year for the Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), paid monthly. Those are product rates, not a promise that the entire ₹2.5 crore can earn them or that the resulting cash flow will remain adequate after tax and inflation.

Start with your after-tax monthly spending gap

List essential and discretionary expenses separately, including housing, food, utilities, insurance, travel, support for family members, planned large purchases and a reserve for medical care. Subtract your reliable pension, rent, part-time income and any other cash flow. The balance is the amount your investments must fund.

  • Record the gap after tax, not gross income.
  • Set aside emergency cash and expenses due in the next few years before choosing long-term investments.
  • Decide whether your priority is maximum current income, protection against inflation, or leaving most of the principal to survivors.
  • Note your time horizon and tolerance for a temporary fall in portfolio value.

For example, a ₹1 lakh monthly gap is ₹12 lakh a year before allowing for tax increases, inflation and irregular expenses. That arithmetic describes the cash requirement; it does not establish that any particular withdrawal rate is safe.

What ₹2.5 crore can and cannot do

A quoted interest rate applies only to an eligible deposit within that product’s limits and terms. Your net cash flow can be lower because of tax, limits, changing rates, reinvestment delays and the need to keep money liquid. A market-linked withdrawal can also include your own principal.

Do not apply one rate to the whole corpus. SCSS, for instance, has a ₹30 lakh maximum deposit in India Post’s official material, so it cannot absorb all ₹2.5 crore. The current rate shown by India Post was 8.2% per annum when accessed on 13 October 2026; confirm the rate at the time you invest.

Compare the main income sources

Option Payment pattern and predictability Access, term and limits Main risks and considerations
SCSS Interest paid quarterly; rate displayed by India Post was 8.2% a year on 13 October 2026. Five-year term; eligibility rules apply; ₹30 lakh maximum deposit according to India Post’s Annual Report 2024-25. Tax, lock-in and reinvestment risk; rate and scheme rules can change. Confirm current terms before purchase.
Post Office MIS Monthly interest; India Post displayed 7.4% a year on 13 October 2026. Current deposit ceiling was not established here; verify the latest scheme terms. Interest-rate, inflation and tax risk; principal access follows scheme rules.
Bank deposits Interest frequency and certainty depend on the deposit chosen. Tenure, premature-withdrawal rules and applicable deposit insurance need checking for each bank and account. Reinvestment risk when deposits mature, tax on interest and concentration risk if too much is held with one institution.
Mutual-fund SWP Scheduled unit redemptions; the amount is not a guaranteed yield. Usually more accessible than a lock-in product, subject to fund rules, exit loads and market liquidity. Withdrawals may contain principal. A market decline early in retirement can make a fixed withdrawal harder to sustain; returns are not assured.
Annuity Quotation-dependent stream, potentially for life or a chosen period. Terms, surrender value, liquidity and survivor options depend on the contract. Inflation risk, insurer and contract terms, and the trade-off between income and money left to heirs. No quotation was established here.
RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds Coupon and payment schedule must be checked in the current notification. Operational guidelines exist, but current coupon and redemption terms should be verified before investing. Rate-reset, tax and liquidity considerations; do not use an old coupon to forecast income.

A practical way to structure the corpus

Use separate “buckets” rather than chasing one headline return. The exact rupee allocation should follow your spending worksheet and personal advice, not a generic percentage.

Bucket 1: immediate liquidity

Keep emergency reserves and near-term expenses in accessible, low-volatility holdings. Include deductibles, known medical or home costs and the cash needed while investments are being transferred or renewed.

Bucket 2: predictable income

Use eligible interest-paying products, deposits or other instruments whose payment dates match your bills. Check deposit caps, maturity dates, premature-access rules and whether the interest is paid monthly or quarterly. Stagger maturities so one renewal date does not determine your entire income.

Bucket 3: inflation protection

A retirement that may last decades needs some growth exposure if your risk capacity and horizon permit it. Diversified funds can provide growth potential, but their value fluctuates and withdrawals are not guaranteed. Keep enough of the first two buckets so you are not forced to sell after a sharp fall.

Bucket 4: legacy or later-life needs

If leaving principal matters, identify that amount separately from money intended for spending. Survivor benefits, nomination, joint ownership, estate documents and the tax treatment of each holding affect what heirs receive.

How to use an SWP safely

An SWP is an instruction to redeem a specified number or value of mutual-fund units on a schedule. It is not an interest payment. When markets are down, the same rupee withdrawal sells more units, reducing the units available for future withdrawals.

  1. Define the annual spending gap after pension and other income.
  2. Keep near-term withdrawals outside volatile assets where possible.
  3. Choose a diversified fund category consistent with your horizon and risk capacity; do not infer a future return from a past performance table.
  4. Set a withdrawal amount that can be reviewed when spending, tax or market conditions change.
  5. Rebalance from assets that have risen rather than selling depressed holdings automatically.
  6. Review the plan at least annually and after major health, family or income changes.

The available evidence does not establish a universally safe withdrawal percentage. A planner must test your actual expenses, inflation assumptions, taxes, market sequence and desired legacy.

Tax can change the cash you actually receive

Tax depends on your income category, assessment year, chosen tax regime, instrument and transaction. Interest, capital gains and mutual-fund redemptions do not necessarily receive the same treatment. The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026-27 information describes applicable normal or special rates, while capital-gains treatment depends on the asset and transaction details.

  • Estimate tax using your residency, other income and the relevant assessment year.
  • For redemptions, record purchase dates, holding periods, cost and each transaction rather than treating the withdrawal as pure interest.
  • Do not call a pre-tax product rate your monthly income.
  • Recheck tax rules before each financial year and before large withdrawals.

Checks before committing money

  1. Write the spending-gap worksheet and a separate emergency reserve.
  2. Confirm SCSS or MIS eligibility, current rates, payment frequency, deposit ceilings and maturity rules on the latest India Post material.
  3. Obtain current bank-deposit terms and spread concentration across institutions only after checking the relevant protections and access rules.
  4. Request any annuity illustration in writing, including escalation, guarantee period, death benefit, surrender value and tax treatment.
  5. Verify the current RBI Floating Rate Savings Bonds notification instead of relying on an old operational-guidelines document.
  6. Have a qualified Indian fee-only planner or registered investment adviser review the plan if the cash-flow or tax decisions are complex; verify credentials and fees independently.

Common mistakes that reduce retirement income

  • Putting the entire corpus into a capped scheme and assuming the displayed rate applies to all ₹2.5 crore.
  • Calling an SWP a guaranteed return or ignoring that it can sell principal.
  • Using a stale RBI bond coupon or an old small-savings rate.
  • Locking up money needed for medical emergencies or near-term bills.
  • Ignoring inflation, taxes and the date on which each deposit matures.
  • Choosing an allocation before deciding whether principal must be preserved for heirs.

When to revise the plan

Recalculate after a pension change, major medical event, property sale, family-support obligation, tax-law change, product-rate change or sustained portfolio decline. A steady income plan is a monitoring process, not a one-time purchase.

The right answer for ₹2.5 crore is therefore a documented cash-flow plan: liquid reserves first, eligible predictable-income instruments within their limits, and enough diversified growth exposure to address a long retirement when your circumstances justify it. Only after those inputs are known can you state a defensible monthly withdrawal amount.
