You can’t buy the S&P 500 index itself. To invest in it, you buy shares of an index mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to track the benchmark, using an investment account. Before choosing a fund, check what it tracks, how it trades, its full costs, and how large-company U.S. stocks fit your goals and risk tolerance.

What it means to invest in the S&P 500

The S&P 500 is a stock-market index: a benchmark that measures the performance of a group of large U.S. companies. It is not a fund or security with shares you can purchase directly. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) puts it plainly: “You cannot invest directly in a market index, but because index funds track a market index they provide an indirect investment option.” You can read the SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Index Funds for more on how these funds work.

An index fund is an investment fund that aims to follow an index. It can be structured as a mutual fund or an ETF. When you buy shares in one, you own a stake in the fund—not the index itself. The fund holds or otherwise represents investments intended to track the benchmark, and its value can rise or fall.

What the index represents

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the S&P 500 as a benchmark for large-cap U.S. equities. Its profile says the index includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization. In the profile’s dated characteristics table, the index had 503 constituents as of August 31, 2026. The familiar “500” is the index’s name, not a promise that it always contains exactly 500 separately listed stocks. Some companies have multiple share classes, and index constituents can change.

The index is float-adjusted market-cap weighted. In practical terms, companies with a greater float-adjusted market value receive larger weights, so their share-price moves have more influence on the index than those of smaller constituents. The S&P 500 therefore represents a group of large U.S. companies, not 500 equal-sized bets, every U.S. company, or every kind of investment. Its composition and weights change over time. The index provider’s S&P 500 profile gives its characteristics.

Choose the investment account before the fund

The account is where you hold the fund. It can affect which investments you can buy, the charges you pay, and the rules that apply. Start by reviewing accounts available to you rather than assuming you need to open a new one.

Check an existing workplace plan

If you have an employer-sponsored retirement plan, look at its investment menu and fee information. It may offer an S&P 500 index option, a different kind of stock fund, or no S&P 500 fund at all. Compare the exact benchmark and share class shown in the plan materials; do not rely on a fund name alone.

Consider whether another account fits

If you do not have a suitable workplace option, an IRA or taxable brokerage account may be possibilities to investigate. The appropriate account, your eligibility, and any tax consequences depend on current law and your personal circumstances. The information here does not determine which account you qualify for or should use. Check the account provider’s current terms and consult a qualified tax professional if you need advice about your situation.

Whichever account you consider, examine its fees, investment menu, purchase rules, and available features. Some accounts may make one fund structure easier to use than another, or may not offer a fund you are considering.

Mutual fund or ETF: how the buying process differs

An S&P 500 mutual fund and an S&P 500 ETF can both provide exposure to the benchmark, but their shares are bought and sold differently. The mechanics can affect how you place an order and what costs to check; neither structure is automatically the better choice for every investor.

Feature Index mutual fund ETF
How shares trade Orders are generally priced at the next calculated net asset value (NAV). Shares trade on an exchange during the trading day at market prices.
Price relative to NAV Transactions generally use the next calculated NAV. The market price can be above or below NAV, at a premium or discount.
Costs to check Expense ratio, account or transaction charges, minimum investment, and any purchase or redemption rules. Expense ratio, account or transaction charges, bid-ask spread, and whether the market price is at a premium or discount to NAV.
Account features to verify Minimums, recurring purchases, and whether the account offers the specific share class. Fractional shares, recurring purchases, order options, and whether the account offers the specific fund.

These are general trading distinctions, not guarantees about every provider’s rules. An account provider can set its own requirements and charges. The SEC explains the differences in its Investor Bulletin: Characteristics of Mutual Funds and Exchange-Traded Funds.

What NAV and the ETF spread mean

NAV, or net asset value, is the value per fund share calculated from the fund’s assets and liabilities. A mutual fund order is generally priced at the next calculated NAV, rather than at a continuously changing price during the day. An ETF, by contrast, trades on an exchange at a market price, which can differ from NAV.

An ETF’s bid-ask spread is the difference between the price buyers are bidding and the price sellers are asking. It is a trading cost to consider in addition to the fund’s stated expense ratio. ETF investors can also consider whether a limit order is appropriate for their trading knowledge. A limit order sets a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price; it may not execute if the market does not reach that price. Check your account’s order options and instructions before placing a trade.

Compare the full cost, not just the expense ratio

An expense ratio is a fund’s stated annual operating expense as a percentage of assets. It is a useful comparison point, but it is not necessarily the total cost of investing. The SEC notes that fees, expenses, and trading costs can cause an index fund to underperform its index. Differences between a fund’s returns and its benchmark—often called tracking difference—also matter. Review the current prospectus and shareholder report rather than treating a low expense ratio as a complete measure of cost or results.

Costs and implementation details to check

  • Expense ratio: Find the current figure in the fund’s official materials. Confirm what share class the figure applies to.
  • Account charges: Check whether the provider charges account fees or other costs associated with holding or trading the investment.
  • Transaction charges: Look for commissions or transaction fees that may apply to a purchase or sale.
  • ETF bid-ask spread: Consider the gap between the quoted buying and selling prices, as well as whether the ETF’s market price is above or below NAV.
  • Minimum investment: Confirm the amount required to start or maintain an investment. Do not assume that two funds or accounts have the same minimum.
  • Fractional shares and recurring investing: Verify whether your account allows purchases of less than a whole share and whether it supports scheduled contributions or purchases.
  • Tracking difference and replication: Review the fund’s stated approach and how its returns compare with the index over the periods shown in its official materials. Past tracking does not promise future results.

These costs and features can vary by account, fund, and share class, and provider terms can change. Check them in the account’s fee schedule and the fund’s current documents before investing.

Examples of S&P 500 ETFs—and what the figures do and do not tell you

These examples show how to recognize funds that explicitly seek to track the S&P 500. They are not recommendations or a ranking. Their expense ratios are dated issuer figures and can change; check the issuer’s current page and fund documents before making a decision.

Fund Stated objective Expense ratio and date Issuer information
VOO — Vanguard S&P 500 ETF Seeks to track the S&P 500 Index. 0.03%, as of April 28, 2026, according to Vanguard. Vanguard VOO page
IVV — iShares Core S&P 500 ETF Seeks to track the S&P 500 Index. 0.03%, according to the iShares issuer page retrieved in September 2026. iShares IVV page

The stated expense ratio alone does not tell you what you will pay in account or trading charges, how the ETF’s spread affects a trade, or how closely the fund will track the index in a particular period. Nor does an expense ratio guarantee that two funds will deliver identical realized returns. Compare each fund’s current documents and the rules of the account where you would hold it.

How to invest in an S&P 500 fund: a practical checklist

  1. Identify the account. Review any workplace plan you can access, then investigate whether an IRA or taxable brokerage account is relevant to your circumstances. Read the account’s current fee schedule and investment menu.
  2. Search for the exact benchmark. Confirm that the fund’s objective explicitly says it seeks to track the S&P 500 Index. A product name that includes “500” is not enough to establish that it tracks the same benchmark.
  3. Confirm the structure and share class. Determine whether the investment is a mutual fund or ETF and whether your account offers that exact fund or share class. Note any minimum, purchase restrictions, or other account rules.
  4. Read the latest fund documents. Review the prospectus, fee table, and shareholder report. Check the objective, expenses, risks, purchase and redemption terms, and any disclosed approach to tracking the index.
  5. Calculate the costs you could face. Consider the expense ratio together with account fees, transaction charges, and, for an ETF, the bid-ask spread and possible premium or discount to NAV. Confirm details with the provider because they may change.
  6. Check the purchase process. Find out whether the account supports fractional shares or recurring purchases, how it handles orders, and what minimum applies. For an ETF, understand the available order types before submitting an order.
  7. Choose a contribution amount and schedule only if it fits. A regular contribution schedule can make investing systematic, but it does not prevent losses or assure a profit. Set an amount that is compatible with your budget and the level of risk you are willing to take.
  8. Review the portfolio around the fund. Consider what other investments you hold and what exposures they provide. A single S&P 500 fund represents large U.S. companies; whether you need other geographies, smaller companies, bonds, or cash depends on your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance.

These steps are a way to evaluate the investment and its mechanics, not a directive to buy. If the fund or account documents do not make a fee or rule clear, ask the provider to explain it before placing an order.

Risks and limits to understand before investing

The value can fall

An S&P 500 fund is exposed to the stocks in its benchmark. The fund’s value can decline, and you could sell for less than you invested. Tracking an index does not protect a fund from losses in the underlying market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many constituents do not mean equal exposure

Because the S&P 500 uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting, larger companies have greater influence on its performance. The index includes many companies, but it does not divide exposure evenly among them. A group of large U.S. companies is also not the same as a portfolio holding companies of all sizes around the world or other asset classes.

A fund will not match a hypothetical index return exactly

The index itself is not investable. A fund’s fees, expenses, trading costs, tracking error, and implementation can cause its results to differ from the benchmark. The SEC also notes that index funds may have less flexibility to respond to falling constituents and may use sampling. Read the fund’s documents to understand its stated approach and risks; do not assume that a fund’s return will equal the index’s return.

Regular investing does not remove market risk

Making contributions on a recurring schedule can help make the process consistent, but it does not guarantee a profit, prevent a loss, or establish that a particular schedule is right for you. Your ability to tolerate fluctuations and your need for the money are relevant to whether stock-market exposure is suitable.
