How to Correct Your Social Security Earnings Record Before Claiming Benefits

Find a missing or incorrect Social Security earnings entry? Compare your record with wage and tax documents, use the right correction route, and act promptly because the ordinary deadline is limited.

Check your complete earnings history in your my Social Security account, compare questionable years with your wage and tax records, and ask the right party to correct the problem. If an employer reported your wages incorrectly, ask the employer to submit Form W-2c. For other errors, request a correction from the Social Security Administration (SSA)—online if you are eligible, or by phone or appointment. The ordinary correction period is three years, three months, and 15 days after the relevant year, so do not wait until you apply for benefits to investigate a discrepancy.

Why check your earnings record before claiming?

Social Security benefits for you and, in some cases, your family are based on the earnings shown in your record. The SSA warns that earnings missing from the record could result in lower benefit amounts. A correction may also affect eligibility, entitlement, benefit estimates, or other determinations; the effect depends on your record and the SSA’s decision.

Review the earnings history itself, not only a retirement estimate. The displayed record may not show earnings above the annual amount subject to Social Security tax. Those excess earnings are not covered earnings, so their absence from the record does not by itself indicate an error. A benefit estimate is useful for planning, but it does not replace checking whether the underlying years and amounts are accurate.

It is worth checking before you claim because there may be a limited period to correct the record, and because establishing what happened can take time. You may need to find old wage documents, contact a former employer, or answer questions from the SSA. Checking early gives you more opportunity to assemble that information; it does not guarantee a particular benefit increase or correction outcome.

How to check the complete earnings history

  1. Sign in to your my Social Security account. Review the earnings history year by year and note every amount that looks missing, understated, or unfamiliar. Check the full history rather than looking only at the estimate or the most recent year.
  2. Compare questionable years with your own records. Check W-2s, tax returns, pay slips or wage stubs, and other records showing where and when you worked. Match the documents to the year and the employer; a discrepancy in one year does not necessarily mean the entire history is wrong.
  3. Separate a recent posting delay from a possible error. The SSA says last year’s wages may not appear until later in the current year. Its March 2026 publication recommends checking your Statement in August for the prior-year amount. That is agency guidance, not a guarantee that every person’s earnings will post by then.
  4. Check whether the online correction option is available. Eligible users may see “Request a correction online” in their account. The option is not available to everyone; if you do not see it, contact the SSA through another route.

As you compare records, write down the year, the amount shown in the account, the amount you believe is correct, and the employer or type of work involved. This simple comparison helps you describe the issue clearly whether you use the online process, call the SSA, or make an appointment. It also helps distinguish a missing entry from an amount that is present but understated.

Do not treat a very recent year as a definite omission until you have considered the reporting delay. For an older year, or an amount that conflicts with your records, begin gathering proof and follow the correction process promptly. If the prior-year amount still is not listed after the point when the SSA says to check, contact the agency rather than assuming that it will eventually appear.

Identify what kind of discrepancy you found

The right route depends on whether earnings are missing, were reported incorrectly by an employer, belong to someone else, involve self-employment, or may simply not have posted yet. Identifying the category first can save time: an employer correction, a request to remove earnings attributed to you by mistake, and a self-employment correction do not necessarily follow the same steps or deadline rules.

What you see What to check Likely next step
Wages are missing or lower than your records show Identify the employer, year, and amount; compare the entry with W-2s, wage statements, pay records, or other evidence of work. If an employer’s report was wrong, ask the employer about a corrected W-2c. Otherwise, request an SSA correction.
An employer reported the wrong wages Compare the SSA entry with the W-2 and your pay records. Ask the employer to submit Form W-2c. The SSA says the employee need not file a separate correction after the employer submits it.
Earnings appear that are not yours Note the years and amounts, and check whether a name or Social Security number may have been used incorrectly. Use the SSA’s process for removing earnings that do not belong to you. Online requests may be available; some cases require identity verification and an office visit.
Self-employment income is missing or wrong Identify the tax year and the tax return reporting the income. Ask the SSA about correcting the record. Late-correction rules for self-employment income have particular restrictions and may differ from wage rules.
Last year’s wages are not displayed yet Consider when the employer reported wages and when the SSA processes them. Follow the SSA’s guidance on checking again before treating the absence as a definite error.

Possible causes of a mismatch include an employer reporting wages under the wrong name or Social Security number, a name change after marriage or divorce that was not reported, an incorrect employer report, or work performed using an SSN that did not belong to you. The mismatch does not by itself tell you which explanation applies. Compare the record with your own documents and explain what you can establish when you contact the SSA.

Also distinguish a wrong employer report from a mistake in how earnings appear in the SSA record. If your W-2 itself shows incorrect wages, ask the employer about correcting that report with Form W-2c. If your W-2 and other records appear right but the SSA history does not match them, request help from the SSA. If you see work you never performed, use the process for earnings that are not yours instead of treating it as an ordinary missing-wage case.

Gather evidence before you contact the SSA

The SSA’s March 2026 publication lists a W-2, tax return, pay slip or wage stub, other wage records, and other documents showing that you worked as possible evidence. Gather copies that support the particular year and amount in question. If your concern is earnings attributed to someone else, the SSA’s 2026 FAQ recommends bringing copies of filed tax returns for the years involved to an office visit; Form SSA-7008 may be requested in some cases.

Try to connect each document to the discrepancy you are asking the agency to review. For example, identify which year and employer a W-2 concerns, or which tax return relates to the self-employment income in question. If several years are affected, organize the evidence by year so it is clear which records support each part of your request. The SSA may ask for more information, so keep your own copies of what you submit.

If you do not have documents, write down the details you can establish:

  • The employer’s name and work location.
  • The dates you worked and the amount you earned.
  • The name and Social Security number used for the work.
  • Any other information that can help identify the employer or period.

Lack of a W-2 does not mean you should leave the issue unexplained. The SSA lists other wage records and documents showing work as possible evidence; if you have none, provide the employer, location, dates, amount earned, and name and SSN used, as the agency recommends. Be as specific as you can, and explain where the information comes from.

The SSA may need to contact the employer, or may ask you to do so. The agency says the time needed to address a discrepancy can depend on the information provided; it does not give a single expected processing time. Do not plan around an assumed turnaround date. Keep notes of when you contacted the employer or SSA and what you were asked to provide, especially if the correction period is approaching.

Request a correction from Social Security

Online, by phone, or by appointment

If your account offers “Request a correction online,” follow that process and provide the year, employer, amount, and evidence requested. If the option is unavailable—or if your case requires additional identity verification—contact the SSA to ask how to proceed. The agency’s correction publication describes requests online, by mail, by phone, and in person by appointment. Online eligibility is not universal, so the absence of the option does not mean you cannot ask for a correction.

The SSA’s publication, current as of October 11, 2026, lists the national number as 1-800-772-1213 and TTY as 1-800-325-0778. Contact arrangements can change; confirm current instructions on SSA.gov before mailing documents or traveling to an office. If you need an office visit, follow the current appointment instructions rather than assuming you can walk in.

When you contact the agency, state plainly whether earnings are missing, understated, or not yours. Identify the year or years, the employer or income type, the amount shown, and what you believe should be shown. Tell the SSA what supporting documents you have and whether you have already asked an employer to correct its report. This keeps the conversation focused on the specific entry at issue.

For earnings that are not yours, the SSA describes a process that can involve identity verification and an office visit. Follow the instructions for your specific case; the agency’s description of a declaration under penalty of perjury applies to that process and should not be assumed to be a step for every kind of correction.

Written requests and Form SSA-7008

When a written request is needed, federal rules say it must state that the earnings record is incorrect and be signed. It should identify the period in question and describe or include the available evidence. It may be filed with an SSA employee at an office or another authorized location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Form SSA-7008 is titled “Request for Correction of Earnings Record.” It asks for identifying information, names or Social Security numbers used, and supporting details. Use the SSA’s current form and filing instructions; a form or written request does not guarantee that the record will be changed.

A clear written request should make it easy to identify both the entry you dispute and the evidence you are offering. Specify the year or period, say what is wrong with the record, and include or describe the documents you have. If you used another name or SSN for the work, include that information as requested on the form. The regulation requires a signed statement of the error; SSA-7008 is the agency’s dedicated correction form, not a substitute for following the current instructions that apply to your case.

If your employer reported wages incorrectly

Ask the employer to correct the wage report by submitting Form W-2c. The SSA says you do not need to make a separate correction request after the employer has submitted the corrected form. Keep your own copy of the W-2c and any related correspondence, and check your Social Security earnings history later to confirm the correction appears.

If the employer cannot or will not correct the report, or if the issue is not an employer reporting error, contact the SSA and provide the evidence you have. Explain which year and amount are disputed and what you have already asked the employer to do. A W-2c is the route for an employer’s correction of its wage report; it is not something the employee can file in place of the employer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that submitting a request to your employer immediately changes the SSA record. The agency says an employee need not make a separate correction once the employer has submitted the W-2c, but you can still review the earnings history later to see whether the update is reflected. If it is not, contact the SSA and explain that the employer submitted a correction.

Know the correction deadline—and its limits

The ordinary period for correcting an earnings record is three years, three months, and 15 days after the relevant year. The SSA’s 2023 FAQ states this general limit for wages. The SSA Handbook explains that “year” means calendar year for wages and taxable year for self-employment income. If the final day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, legal holiday, or another specified federal non-work day, the period extends to the next work day.

Before the period ends, the SSA says it will correct the record for any reason when satisfactory evidence shows the record is wrong. Start well before the deadline if you can: you may need time to locate records, contact an employer, or respond to a request for more information. Do not wait for a benefit application to discover that an older year is incomplete, particularly if you are already near the end of the ordinary period.

Some corrections can be allowed after the ordinary period, but the exceptions depend on the reason. Federal rules include cases such as certain corrections to agree with tax returns; a written request or benefit application filed before the deadline while the relevant decision remains open; an investigation begun before the deadline; errors apparent from SSA records; fraud; earnings assigned to the wrong person or period; some omitted or understated wages; and special rules for self-employment income and Railroad Retirement Board records. These are not a blanket extension for every old record. Ask the SSA to evaluate the facts and the rule that applies to your case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, a late correction is not automatically impossible, but neither should you assume that an old entry can always be changed. The reason for the error, the type of earnings, the evidence, and whether a request or other relevant action occurred before the deadline can matter. If you discover a discrepancy after the ordinary period, describe the full circumstances to the SSA and ask which exception, if any, applies. A general statement that the entry is wrong does not establish eligibility for a particular exception.

What to do if earnings belong to someone else

Do not try to resolve an unfamiliar entry by changing unrelated personal information. Make a list of the earnings and years you believe are not yours, collect tax returns or other records that help establish your work history, and contact the SSA about its process for removing them. The agency may offer an online route, but some people will need to verify their identity in person. In some cases, the SSA may request Form SSA-7008.

Because this procedure can involve identity verification and a signed declaration, follow the instructions the SSA gives for your situation. Do not assume that the office-visit requirements described for non-owned earnings apply to a missing-wage correction or an employer’s W-2c submission.

For an office visit about earnings attributed to someone else, the SSA’s 2026 FAQ recommends bringing copies of filed tax returns for the years in question. Be ready to identify which entries are not yours and provide the information the agency requests to verify your identity. The SSA may ask for a declaration under penalty of perjury as part of this specific process; do not treat that as a universal requirement for all earnings-record corrections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do about self-employment income

For self-employment, identify the taxable year and the tax return associated with the income. The deadline is calculated by taxable year for self-employment income, rather than the calendar-year convention used for wages. The rules for making a correction after the ordinary period have specific restrictions, so do not assume that a late wage correction exception applies to self-employment income. Give the SSA the relevant return and ask it to assess the correction under the rules for that income type.

Keep the self-employment question distinct from an employer’s wage report. The documents and tax year involved may differ, and late-correction treatment is not interchangeable. If a return is the evidence for the amount you believe should be reflected, identify the return and year when you ask the SSA to review the record. The agency will determine whether the record can be corrected under the applicable rule.

A practical checklist before you claim

  • Review the full earnings history in your my Social Security account, not only the benefit estimate.
  • For each discrepancy, record the year, employer or income type, displayed amount, and amount supported by your records.
  • Check whether recent wages may still be pending, using the SSA’s guidance for the prior-year Statement.
  • Compare the record with W-2s, tax returns, pay slips or wage stubs, and other documents showing work.
  • Ask the employer to submit a W-2c when the employer’s wage report is wrong.
  • Use the SSA process for missing wages, non-owned earnings, or self-employment income as appropriate.
  • Keep copies of your evidence and correspondence, and confirm whether the record changes.
  • Act before the ordinary correction period expires; if it has passed, ask about the specific exception that may apply rather than assuming the record is either unchangeable or automatically eligible for correction.

The main decision points are the type of error, the evidence you can provide, whether an online request is available to you, and whether the ordinary deadline has passed. You do not need to buy a product or hire a paid intermediary to use the SSA’s correction process; the agency provides the form and instructions directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I correct my Social Security earnings record?

Review the full history in your my Social Security account, compare the questionable year with W-2s, tax returns, pay stubs, or other work records, and identify the exact year and amount at issue. If eligible, use “Request a correction online.” Otherwise, contact the SSA by phone or ask about an office appointment. If an employer reported wages incorrectly, ask the employer to submit Form W-2c.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if earnings are missing?

First check whether the wages are recent and may not have posted yet; the SSA says last year’s wages may appear later in the current year and recommends checking the Statement in August for the prior-year amount. If an older amount is missing or a discrepancy remains, gather evidence such as a W-2, tax return, wage stub, or other records showing work, then request a correction from the SSA.

What is the deadline to correct an earnings record?

The ordinary correction period is three years, three months, and 15 days after the relevant year. For wages, the year is the calendar year; for self-employment income, it is the taxable year. Some exceptions permit corrections later, but they depend on the facts and the type of error. Ask the SSA to evaluate your case rather than assuming every old record can—or cannot—be changed.

Does my employer need to do anything to correct my earnings record?

If the employer reported your wages incorrectly, the employer should submit Form W-2c. The SSA says you do not need to file a separate correction once the employer has submitted the corrected form. Keep a copy of the W-2c and check your earnings history later; contact the SSA if the issue remains.

What if earnings on my record are not mine?

Make a list of the years and entries you believe belong to someone else and contact the SSA about its process for removing them. Online requests may be available, but some cases involve identity verification and an office visit. The SSA’s 2026 FAQ recommends bringing copies of filed tax returns for the years in question; Form SSA-7008 may be requested in some cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I correct self-employment earnings after the deadline?

Self-employment income has specific rules for corrections after the ordinary period, and they can differ from wage-correction exceptions. Identify the taxable year and relevant tax return, then ask the SSA to assess your situation under the rules for self-employment income. The ordinary deadline passing does not by itself establish whether a particular exception applies.

Will correcting my record increase my Social Security benefit?

Missing earnings could result in lower benefit amounts for you or your family, but a correction does not guarantee a particular change. The effect depends on your earnings record and the SSA’s determination; the agency says changes may affect eligibility, entitlement, benefit estimates, or other determinations.

The Bottom Line

Check the full earnings history, match questionable entries to wage and tax records, and route the problem according to its cause: an employer should correct its own wage report with Form W-2c, while other discrepancies should be raised with the SSA. Act promptly because the ordinary deadline is three years, three months, and 15 days, and any late-correction exception depends on the specific facts.
