Choose the route that fits your store
Google supports several ways to provide product information. The right choice depends on whether you have manufacturer barcodes, a compatible point-of-sale (POS) system, online product data, and the ability to maintain inventory feeds.
| Route | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Business Profile Product Editor | Adding individual items manually | Enter products one at a time. If automatic products are added later, Google says they may replace manually uploaded products. Google Business Profile Help |
| Local Inventory app | Eligible stores with a compatible POS and barcode products | Google documents automatic inventory workflows and names Clover, Square, and Lightspeed as examples of supported POS systems. Check current compatibility and eligibility with Google. Google Business Profile Help |
| Merchant Center inventory data | Stores that can maintain product and local inventory data at scale | Product IDs must match between product and inventory sources, and store codes must match linked Business Profiles. Google Merchant Center Help |
| Online products shown as local inventory | A business with one physical store that also sells products online | Google describes an automatic option that uses online price and availability to set local product details. Its stated scope is a single physical store. Google Merchant Center Help |
| Supported delivery-partner inventory | Stores whose in-store inventory is supplied by a supported partner | Google says inventory may come from partners such as Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats; review the linked or pending source and opt-out process in Google’s guidance. Check eligibility for automatic in-store products
Google’s stated automatic Product Profile route is limited to the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia. It requires a physical store, a verified Business Profile, an eligible business vertical, manufacturer products with UPC or EAN barcodes, and either a wired barcode scanner or compatible POS. Feature availability can vary by region. See Google’s eligibility and setup guidance before buying equipment or changing your inventory process.
A wired scanner is relevant to that automatic workflow, not a universal requirement: manual Product Editor entry and other Merchant Center routes are separate options. Google says the service was called Pointy before and is now fully integrated into Google; the Local Inventory app is the current integrated service.

Add products through your Business Profile
- Confirm the profile is verified and published. The automatic in-store route requires a verified Business Profile, and local products need a published profile to be eligible. Google Business Profile Help Google Merchant Center Help
- Open the Products or Edit products flow. Use the product controls on the Business Profile. If Google asks you to connect Merchant Center or request access, follow that prompt. Google Business Profile Help
- Enter each item in Product Editor if you are adding products manually. Supply accurate product details and submit the item for Google’s review. Manual entry is an individual-item option; it does not itself guarantee display.
- For automatic syncing, verify your setup first. Check the country, vertical, barcode, scanner or POS compatibility, and any other stated eligibility conditions before relying on the Local Inventory app.
Set up Merchant Center inventory so products match the store
For feed-based inventory, matching identifiers are essential: the product ID in the product data must be consistent with its local inventory record, and each store code must correspond to the Business Profile it is meant to represent. A mismatch can prevent Google from associating a product with the right store. Google explains the mapping requirements in About data mapping across feeds and accounts.
For the online-to-local option, Google says a single-store business that sells products online can have online products automatically showcased to local shoppers. Online price and availability are used to set local product details, which can appear as local inventory on Search, Shopping, and Maps through free local listings. Make sure the online information accurately reflects the local details you want shoppers to see. Google Merchant Center Help

Why products may not appear
- The store or feature is ineligible. Check the country, business type, physical-store, verification, barcode, and POS requirements for the automatic route. Regional feature availability can differ. Google Business Profile Help
- The Business Profile is not verified or published. Resolve profile status before troubleshooting individual inventory items. Google Merchant Center Help
- Product data is not matched to local inventory or the correct store. Compare product IDs across data sources and verify that store codes match the linked Business Profiles. Google Merchant Center Help
- The product has not been approved or lacks eligible inventory. Review Merchant Center diagnostics and approval status. Products generally need associated inventory; products that are all out of stock are generally ineligible, except for specified pickup cases. Google Merchant Center Help
- Manual entry was assumed to guarantee placement. Submission is not a promise of display; Google’s approval and local eligibility rules still apply. Google Merchant Center Help
Product questions in Maps are not a product catalog
Google may ask some physical-goods stores yes-or-no questions about whether they carry certain product categories. This feature is not available for every profile, and answering signals categories rather than submitting individual products or their stock levels. Use a product submission route if you want specific items represented. Google Business Profile Help

Eligible products can appear across Google surfaces, including Maps, Search, Shopping, and the Business Profile, but placement depends on feature availability, account and product eligibility, and approval. Google describes free local listings as organic listings; it does not establish a guaranteed level of traffic, clicks, or sales. Google Merchant Center Help
