There is no guaranteed way for everyone to get an Xbox Game Pass subscription for free. Xbox may show eligible accounts a limited-time promotion, but offers depend on factors such as region and subscriber status—and a promotion can require a credit card and renew at the regular price unless you cancel. Sign in and check the terms shown for your account before accepting anything.
Check whether Xbox is showing your account a promotion
Xbox’s plan comparison page says promotional offers may be limited to new subscribers, may not be valid for all subscribers, are available only for a limited time, and apply only in select regions. The public page cannot confirm which offer, if any, is available to your signed-in account.
Read the checkout terms before accepting an offer. Xbox says a credit card is required and that, after the promotional period, the subscription automatically continues at the then-current regular price, plus applicable taxes, unless canceled. The renewal price can change. Check the displayed duration, renewal date, and amount rather than assuming that a promotion is a free trial or that it will end automatically.
Know the difference between a free offer and a low introductory price
A discounted first period still costs money. For example, the Canada-localized Microsoft Store listing for Xbox Game Pass Essential showed CAD $1 for 14 days, then CAD $13.99 per month, when accessed in 2026. That is a dated example for a specific regional listing—not a price or offer guaranteed for every Canadian account, and not evidence of availability in the United States or elsewhere. Check your local Store listing for the terms that apply to you: Xbox Game Pass Essential – 14 Day Trial Initial Recurs Monthly.

Can Xbox Rewards points get you a free subscription?
Xbox says Microsoft Rewards points can be earned through activities such as playing, completing quests, and shopping. Rewards require a Microsoft account, are available only in select markets, and vary by plan and Rewards Level. But points should not be treated as a guaranteed way to obtain Game Pass: Xbox’s comparison page says points spent at the Microsoft Store are currently for single-item purchases, excluding subscriptions. Xbox Gift Card redemption also has its own eligibility and timing terms. Check the rules and redemption options shown in your market before counting on points to cover a membership.
Free Play Days let you try games, not join Game Pass
Free Play Days can make selected games playable for a limited event window, but they do not provide a Game Pass subscription. Xbox’s October 1, 2026 announcement offered selected games to all Xbox members from October 1 through October 4 without an Ultimate, Premium, or Essential membership; that event has ended. Other event titles may require a membership, as the September 2026 announcement illustrates. Check the current Free Play Days announcement for dates, games, region, and membership requirements, and do not assume an expired event is still available.

Play free-to-play games without Game Pass
Xbox’s plan comparison says multiplayer access for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. That can be a no-membership option for games in that category, but games are sold separately; it does not unlock Game Pass or its paid catalogue.

Xbox subscriptions recur until canceled. If you accept a promotion and do not want a paid renewal, use your Microsoft account or Xbox console to cancel before the next billing date. Verify the account’s renewal date and amount, and check for a cancellation confirmation so you know the change was completed. Xbox’s billing and offer terms are on its plan comparison page.
