Check what each fare, partner transaction, or card purchase earns, then compare an award with the cash trip you would actually book. Whether status is worthwhile depends on the benefits you expect to use—not simply on reaching a published threshold.
Understand what you are earning
AAdvantage earnings can include Base Miles, Bonus Miles, and Loyalty Points. They are not interchangeable measures of progress. American defines Base Miles as “standard AAdvantage® miles that also earn Loyalty Points.” Bonus Miles generally add redeemable miles without adding Loyalty Points. Both types of miles can be used for redemptions, but a miles promotion does not necessarily help you qualify for status.
See the AAdvantage terms and conditions for the current definitions and earning rules. Read the specific offer terms before acting on a promotion, especially if your goal is status rather than a larger mileage balance.
Choose earning activity that fits your travel
Eligible flights and partner activity can earn miles and Loyalty Points; eligible purchases on AAdvantage credit cards are another route. The right route depends on what you already spend and which activities qualify. Do not add spending or choose a more expensive fare just to earn rewards without comparing the added cost with benefits you will realistically use.

Paid American Airlines and partner flights
For eligible tickets, earnings may be based on ticket price or, for certain partner flights and fares, on distance and booking code. Price-based calculations exclude government taxes and fees, and not every fare qualifies. Partner flights may earn Bonus Miles rather than Base Miles, so check both the mileage and Loyalty Point treatment for the particular itinerary.
Before travel, make sure your AAdvantage number is attached to the reservation and that your account details match the booking. Keep the receipt and boarding pass until the credit appears. Use the AAdvantage FAQ and the relevant partner terms to confirm eligibility and earning details.

Basic Economy tickets
American’s FAQ says eligible Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after December 17, 2025 do not earn miles or Loyalty Points. Because eligibility and program terms can change, verify the rule for your ticket before purchase rather than assuming a low fare will contribute to your account.
Eligible card purchases
Eligible purchases on AAdvantage credit cards may earn miles and Loyalty Points, subject to the card and program terms. American says eligible card-purchase miles and Loyalty Points typically post to the primary cardmember’s account in 8 to 10 weeks; the FAQ does not specify a date for that timing. A purchase bonus or other promotion may award Bonus Miles without advancing Loyalty Points. Check the issuer’s current terms and American’s FAQ before counting card activity toward a goal.

Use miles by comparing real itineraries
AAdvantage miles can be used for award travel and upgrades, including on American and American Eagle, with some partner redemption options. There is no fixed value per mile established here: the value depends on the trip and the cash alternative. Avoid judging a redemption from a general cents-per-mile estimate when the itinerary you want may have different restrictions, availability, or mileage requirements.
- Find the award itinerary you would actually take, including dates, destination, connections, and any relevant restrictions.
- Check the mileage required and availability for those exact flights. Award prices and availability can change before ticketing.
- Compare the award with the cash fare for the same or a genuinely acceptable alternative itinerary.
- Consider whether using miles is preferable to saving them for another trip, based on your travel plans and the terms available at that time.
Apply the same comparison to upgrades: check the eligible flight, upgrade requirements, and availability rather than assuming an upgrade will be available simply because you have enough miles. American’s page on AAdvantage miles with American Airlines provides program information for American and American Eagle redemptions.

Decide whether pursuing status makes sense
Loyalty Points count toward status and program rewards. Status benefits can include mileage bonuses, checked-bag allowances, boarding priority, and upgrades, but the benefits available to you can vary by flight and are subject to program terms. A status tier is useful only to the extent that its benefits fit the routes and travel you actually take.
Before pursuing a tier, compare the remaining qualification effort with the benefits you expect to use. Include the cost of any additional eligible activity, and do not count a transaction that earns only Bonus Miles as Loyalty Point progress. American’s Loyalty Points and status page explains the relationship between points and status.

Evaluate the 2026 Loyalty Point Rewards
American’s 2026 reward page lists the following Loyalty Point milestones and associated options. These are program-published thresholds, not a measure of the cash value of a reward. The menu, selection requirements, deadlines, and expiration conditions can differ by reward or location.

Choose based on what you will use, not just the headline tier. Review the 2026 Loyalty Point Rewards page for the current options, location eligibility, and the specific terms attached to each choice. Members qualifying from March 1, 2026 can make selections through March 31, 2027; check the page for any applicable selection and expiration conditions.
Keep your plan current
AAdvantage terms, partner eligibility, award availability, mileage requirements, benefits, and reward menus can change. Confirm the rules that apply to the particular flight, transaction, or reward before committing money or miles. The program’s official terms and pages are the authoritative place to check current conditions.
