Microsoft now calls its consumer subscription Microsoft 365; “Office 365” is the older name. Microsoft’s U.S. store lists the prices below, which can change.

The monthly plans cost more over a year: $119.88 for Personal, $155.88 for Family, and $239.88 for Premium. These totals are calculated from Microsoft’s listed monthly prices. If you expect to keep the subscription for at least a year, compare the annual price rather than looking only at the monthly payment.
1. Use the free web versions
For occasional work, the free versions may be all you need. Anyone with a Microsoft account can use browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint at Microsoft365.com. Microsoft says the free tier includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage, but not the full desktop applications.

- Go to Microsoft365.com.
- Select Sign in and log in with a Microsoft account.
- Open the app launcher.
- Choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
This option is suitable for basic editing, schoolwork, and documents you can work on while connected to the internet. It is not a free replacement for desktop Office if you need reliable offline access, desktop-only features, or advanced spreadsheet and document tools.
2. Split Microsoft 365 Family
Microsoft 365 Family is often the lowest-cost way to get the full desktop apps when several people can share the bill. Microsoft lists it at $129.99 per year and says it supports up to six people total. At six users, that works out to approximately $21.67 per person per year.
Microsoft says each person gets their own Microsoft account and 1 TB of OneDrive storage. Do not share one password or pass around a product key; the subscription owner must send invitations through Microsoft.
- Visit account.microsoft.com/services/office/sharing.
- Select Share.
- Choose Email invite and then Invite, or select Create link and Copy link.
- The recipient selects Get started in the invitation.
- The recipient selects Join now.
Sharing is not available with Microsoft 365 Personal or Basic. Microsoft says the invitee must remain in the owner’s Microsoft family group and may need to leave another family group before accepting the invitation.
There is an important catch for anyone comparing plans because of Copilot or other AI tools: Microsoft says AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with extended storage options, are available only to the subscription owner. They do not automatically transfer to the five additional users.
3. Check your employer’s Workplace Discount Program
Employees of eligible organizations may receive 30% off annual Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions through Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program, formerly called the Home Use Program. Microsoft says the discount remains available while recurring billing stays enabled.
- Open Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program page.
- Enter your work email address and select Get Started.
- Follow the eligibility link sent to your work email.
- Sign in with the personal Microsoft account that should own the subscription.
A work email address by itself does not guarantee eligibility. This is an employer-based program, and Microsoft no longer lists Office Professional Plus or Office Home and Business as current program options.
If you already have Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, Microsoft says a qualifying purchase can add time to the existing subscription. The discounted rate begins at the existing annual renewal date, and you must use the Microsoft account associated with the current subscription.

4. Use a qualifying school account
Eligible students and educators may qualify for free Office 365 A1 through Microsoft Education. Microsoft says A1 includes web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. It is not the same as a paid plan with full desktop applications.
Eligibility depends on the school and may be checked again later. Microsoft says that if you stop qualifying, the applications enter reduced-functionality mode: you can view documents, but you cannot create new documents or edit existing ones. School-linked services such as OneDrive and Office for the web also stop working.
Before relying on the account for important files, confirm whether your school provides a desktop-app plan rather than assuming that any school email unlocks the paid version.
5. See whether your nonprofit qualifies
Microsoft offers grants and discounts to eligible nonprofit organizations, but nonprofit affiliation does not automatically give every member a free personal Microsoft 365 account.

Microsoft says nonprofit grants are generally limited to paid employees and unpaid executive staff. Nonprofit discounts may also cover volunteers. Beneficiaries, members, and donors are not eligible merely because they are connected to the organization. Microsoft currently advertises Microsoft 365 Business Premium at a 75% discount for qualifying nonprofits after the organization registers and passes eligibility validation.
6. Consider Office Home 2024 instead of a subscription
Microsoft lists Office Home 2024 at $179.99 as a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac. It includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
It can be cheaper than Microsoft 365 if you need desktop Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on one computer for several years and do not need cloud storage, multi-device access, or continuously added features. At Microsoft’s current annual Personal price, the $179.99 purchase is lower than two years of Microsoft 365 Personal ($199.98).
That comparison is not identical, however. Microsoft says Office Home 2024:

- is licensed for one computer;
- receives security updates and fixes during its supported period;
- does not receive new feature additions;
- does not include an upgrade to the next major Office release;
- does not provide the subscription’s 1 TB OneDrive allowance or other ongoing services.
Also check the exact edition. Office Home 2024 does not include Outlook; Microsoft lists Office Home & Business 2024 separately with Outlook.
How to stop an unwanted renewal
A cheap first year is not cheap if the subscription renews at full price before you notice. If you do not want automatic renewal, turn it off after purchase rather than waiting for the expiration date.
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Find the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Select Manage.
- Select Turn off recurring billing.
- Review the explanation and choose I don’t want my subscription or I want to keep my benefits.
Microsoft says turning off recurring billing does not immediately cancel the subscription. Your benefits continue until the expiration date shown on the account page. If the page says Turn on recurring billing, automatic renewal is already disabled.
If you bought the subscription through Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or another retailer, you generally need to manage billing and cancellation through that seller.

Microsoft says canceling Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium reduces the account’s cloud-storage allowance to 5 GB. People using shared Family or Premium benefits also lose the expanded storage.
If the account contains more than 5 GB, Microsoft says you cannot upload, edit, or sync new OneDrive files. Outlook.com may also be unable to send or receive email. Microsoft says it may delete OneDrive files after six months if the account remains over quota, so download or move excess files before the subscription expires.

Discounted activation keys sold by unfamiliar marketplaces can be risky. Microsoft warns that unusually cheap standalone keys may be stolen, counterfeit, fraudulently obtained, or unauthorized for resale. A key may work initially and later be blocked, leaving you to pursue the seller for a refund.

- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the license.
- Enter the 25-character key, without hyphens if prompted.
- Complete the redemption process.
After redemption, Microsoft says the key is linked to the Microsoft account and normally is not needed again.
