To move leftover money from a forex card to an Indian bank account, request a refund or redemption from the card’s issuer. There is no universal transfer screen that works for every card: the issuer sets the available channel, eligible receiving account, documents, charges, conversion rate and processing time.
What to do after returning to India
- Identify the issuer and exact card. Use the bank’s official app, internet banking, card portal, customer support or a forex-enabled branch to ask how to redeem the residual balance on your specific product.
- Check when the final card transaction took place. The RBI FAQ describes issuer practice of refunding unused foreign-exchange balances only after 10 days from the last transaction. Axis Bank separately requires the last transaction to be more than 10 days before encashment. - Ask for the net amount and requirements before submitting. Confirm whether you can redeem the full balance or only part, whether the card can remain active, which Indian bank account can receive the funds, what identification or forms are needed, how the balance will be converted to rupees, and what charges, taxes and processing time apply.
- Keep the card and transaction details until the credit arrives. If the card has expired, ask the issuer how it handles residual funds. Axis says an expired-card balance can be encashed at a branch or accessed by requesting a replacement card.
RBI guidance recognizes redemption of unused balances on prepaid travel cards issued to resident Indians on request, subject to conditions for amounts authorised but not yet settled and other permitted retained amounts. The following are product-specific examples from bank FAQs, not a universal set of instructions for all forex cards.

What happens to the currency, fees and credit time?
The reviewed issuer and RBI materials do not establish one current refund fee, conversion rate, exchange-rate spread or processing time for all forex cards. Before authorising redemption, ask the issuer for its live conversion rate, any encashment or closure charge, applicable tax, expected credit time and the resulting net INR amount. RBI’s circular on charges for forex prepaid and travel cards does not by itself set the fee for your particular refund. RBI charges circular.

Can you transfer part of the balance and keep using the card?
That depends on the issuer and product. ICICI’s FAQ says a partial refund to a bank account may be possible while the card remains active; Axis says partial or full encashment does not require surrendering its card. Do not assume either option is available on another card. Ask whether the refund closes, suspends or leaves your card usable, and whether any minimum balance or other condition applies.

A forex card balance is not necessarily available as ordinary rupee funds that you can send through a generic UPI or bank-transfer screen. The official bank instructions described here direct cardholders to the issuer’s own refund or encashment process. Start with the bank that issued the card, rather than trying to route the balance through an unrelated transfer feature.
