If the fare for your flight falls after you book, you may be able to change or reissue your ticket and receive the difference as airline credit—but it is not automatic, and some tickets do not qualify. The result depends on your fare rules, the airline’s current policy, how you booked, and whether any part of the trip has already been flown. Check the terms before canceling or confirming a change.
What happens when a ticket price drops?
A lower fare on the airline’s website does not, by itself, trigger a refund or adjustment to an existing ticket. Usually, you have to take action through the airline’s change or reissue process—or ask the ticket issuer to do it. If the ticket can be reissued at the lower fare, the difference may become a nonrefundable airline credit. A refundable fare may instead return the difference to the original payment method. Some fares or booking situations may produce no useful credit.

The key question is not simply, “Is this flight cheaper now?” It is, “Can my existing ticket be changed or canceled on terms that leave me better off?” Compare the fare rules and the entire itinerary, then account for fees, credit restrictions, and deadlines.

A price drop alone generally does not require the airline to return money. A refund may be available because of the ticket’s refundable terms or another applicable policy, while a voluntary change on a nonrefundable ticket may produce credit instead. Ask which process the airline is applying and what the result will be before you submit a request.

First check whether the lower fare is comparable
Search for the same trip you already booked: the same dates, airports, flights, cabin, and number of passengers. A lower headline price may refer to a different itinerary or fare with different conditions. If you compare a flexible ticket with a more restrictive fare, the displayed difference may not be a realistic saving for your booking.
- Itinerary: Match the departure and arrival airports, dates, flight times, and connections as closely as possible. Confirm whether the cheaper result includes the same flights.
- Cabin and fare conditions: Check the cabin, baggage terms, seat-selection rules, change limits, and cancellation terms. A cheaper fare that removes a benefit you need may not be a better replacement.
- Passenger count: Compare the total for everyone on the reservation, not just a per-person price. A displayed fare may not be available for every passenger.
- Availability: The lower fare must still be available when the airline processes the change. A fare you saw earlier may no longer be offered.
Do not assume a search result can be applied to an existing ticket just because it shows the same flight. The airline or ticket issuer must confirm whether that fare is eligible for your ticket’s reissue. Even when the same flights are available, the booking class or fare conditions may differ, so the amount shown in a new search may not be the amount the airline will apply to your existing reservation.
Choose among keeping, changing, or canceling and rebooking
There are three basic choices. The best one depends on what you would actually receive after fees and restrictions—not just the difference between the old and new displayed fares.

| Option | What to check | When it may make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the ticket | Whether the current ticket already provides the flexibility and benefits you want. | When changing or canceling would cost more than the usable value of the potential savings, or when the cheaper fare is not comparable. |
| Change or reissue at the lower fare | Whether the existing ticket can be reissued, any change charge, and whether the difference is cash or credit. | When the airline permits a lower-fare reissue and the net value of the resulting refund or credit is worthwhile. |
| Cancel and book again | Whether you can cancel, what value you retain, the cancellation terms, and whether the new fare will still be available. | When the cancellation and rebooking route leaves you better off than a change, and you can accept the new ticket’s terms. |
The U.S. Department of Transportation advises travelers to check the airline’s policy. It notes that, in some cases, requesting a refund and booking again may cost less than changing a ticket. That is a comparison to make, not a guarantee: a cancellation may not be available on useful terms, and the lower fare could disappear before you book.
For either route, compare the whole transaction rather than only the change fee. A reissue may preserve your existing reservation but leave the difference as restricted credit; canceling may involve a different fee or forfeit value, and then require you to pay for a new ticket. The lower price is useful only if the final arrangement fits your plans and the remaining value is something you can actually use.
How to check and request the difference
- Open the reservation. Use the airline’s app or website to retrieve the booking. If an agency or online travel agency issued the ticket, check whether the airline or the issuer must handle changes. A direct-booking offer may not apply to an agency booking.
- Find the exact lower fare. Search the same flights, dates, airports, cabin, and passenger count. Record the fare conditions as well as the price.
- Read your ticket’s change and cancellation terms. Check whether the fare is refundable, whether it is Basic Economy or another restricted fare, whether a fee applies, and whether any segment has already been used.
- Ask what happens to the difference before confirming. Use the airline’s change or reissue flow, or contact the ticket issuer. Ask whether the amount will be refunded to the original payment method, issued as a credit, or forfeited; whether a fee applies; and whether you can keep the new itinerary and fare conditions.
- Check the credit’s practical value. If the difference becomes credit, ask who can use it, which trips or airlines it can pay for, whether it can be combined with another payment, and what booking or travel deadline applies. Terms vary by credit type.
- Compare the net result. Subtract any fee and account for restrictions or a deadline you may not be able to meet. Compare that usable value with the benefit of keeping your current ticket.
- Complete the transaction only after reviewing the outcome. Save the new confirmation and the credit details, including its amount, conditions, and expiration date if one applies.
If the change screen does not clearly state what happens to the fare difference, pause and contact the airline or ticket issuer. Do not rely on an assumption that the displayed difference will be returned as cash or credited automatically.

How to compare the real savings
For a straightforward comparison, use the value you can actually use—not the raw difference between two prices. For example, suppose a comparable replacement fare is $80 less, but processing the change costs $25. If the airline confirms that the remaining $55 will be issued as a credit you can use before its deadline, the change may be worthwhile. If the same $55 credit is restricted in a way that makes it unlikely you will use it, its practical value to you is lower. These are illustrative figures, not typical savings or a guarantee of any airline’s terms.
For cancel-and-rebook, include both sides of the transaction: any value retained from the old ticket, any cancellation charge or lost value, and the cost and conditions of the new booking. Confirm that you can complete the new booking before canceling the old one; otherwise, you could give up a confirmed itinerary without securing the lower fare.
- Cash returned: Usually the clearest measure of savings, but only if the ticket terms provide a refund and the airline confirms it.
- Airline credit: Count it according to its restrictions and your likelihood of using it, not as cash in hand. Confirm whose name it is issued in and what travel or booking deadlines apply.
- No retained value: A lower replacement fare may not help if cancellation or reissue terms eliminate the difference or make the transaction more expensive.
For example, a credit that expires before you expect to travel may be worth little to you even if its face value is substantial. A credit that can only be used by the original traveler may also be less flexible than one that can be applied more broadly. Treat the issuer’s stated amount and restrictions as part of the calculation, not as fine print to review later.
What the verified airline policies say
Airline rules are not interchangeable. The following examples were checked against official policy information dated October 9, 2026. Check the current policy and the terms attached to your own reservation before acting; a carrier example does not establish the rule for another airline or for every fare on that carrier.

Delta’s Low Fare Commitment says customers who booked directly with Delta can cancel within 24 hours for a full refund under its 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation policy. After 24 hours, the commitment says a price adjustment is unavailable unless the ticket is refundable. Delta’s U.S. Contract of Carriage describes the result when a ticket is reissued at a lower price: for a nonrefundable ticket, the difference is a nonrefundable Delta travel voucher; for a refundable fare, the difference is refunded to the original form of payment at reissue.

These terms do not mean every Delta passenger automatically receives a credit when a fare falls. Booking channel, fare type, and reissue terms matter. Confirm the amount and form of any adjustment for your specific ticket before proceeding.
American Airlines
American distinguishes Flight Credit from Trip Credit, and its rules vary by credit type, cancellation channel, deadlines, validity, and redemption conditions. American says the ticket must be canceled before the first flight departs to retain remaining value. Its Basic Economy information says changes may be restricted; some eligible AAdvantage members may be able to cancel certain Basic Economy tickets for travel credit subject to a fee.
Do not assume that a credit from one American ticket has the same use rules as another. Check the reservation and the specific credit terms, and act before the first flight departs if you are seeking to preserve remaining value.
Other airlines
Do not infer a universal rule from Delta or American. The applicable terms depend on the operating airline, fare, ticket status, and booking channel. Review the airline’s current policy and the reservation-specific change or cancellation options before taking action.
Booking through an agency or after starting the trip
If an agency issued the ticket
Start by checking the booking confirmation to identify the ticket issuer. The airline may direct you back to the agency for changes, and an airline offer limited to direct bookings may not cover tickets purchased elsewhere. Ask the issuer who can reissue the ticket and what service charges, if any, apply. Get the result for the specific reservation before authorizing a change.
Do not assume that calling the airline will bypass the agency’s process. The agency may control the ticket transaction, while the airline operates the flight. Clarify who is responsible for reissuing or canceling it, and ask whether any agency charge is separate from the airline’s own charge. A cheaper direct fare search is not enough to establish that the agency-issued ticket can be repriced on the same terms.

If you have already flown part of the itinerary
A partly used ticket may be treated differently from an unused one. Tell the airline or issuer which flights have been flown and ask how that affects the remaining ticket value and any lower-fare calculation. Do not apply the full-trip price difference to a partially used booking without confirmation; the value of the unused portion and the rules for the ticket determine what, if anything, remains.
Before the first flight departs
Check cancellation and credit terms before departure. American says remaining ticket value can be lost if the ticket is not canceled before the first flight departs. This makes timing important: waiting to see whether the fare falls further can put retained value at risk under the applicable terms.
That does not mean every traveler should cancel immediately when a fare drops. It means you should find out the deadline and outcome before waiting or abandoning the itinerary. If you are considering canceling, verify how the airline defines the deadline and whether the ticket’s remaining value will be preserved under the option you choose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Canceling before checking the outcome: Find out whether cancellation leaves you with a refund, a restricted credit, or no retained value before you give up the ticket.
- Treating credit as cash: A credit may have a named traveler, limited redemption options, or a deadline. Check its terms and whether you can realistically use it.
- Comparing different fares: A cheaper fare with different flights, restrictions, or included benefits may not be an equivalent replacement.
- Assuming every ticket can be changed: Basic Economy and other restricted fares may limit changes or cancellation. Verify the terms tied to your ticket.
- Ignoring the booking channel: The airline may not process a ticket issued by an agency, and direct-booking terms may not apply.
- Waiting past a deadline: Cancellation rights and retained value can depend on acting before the first flight departs or within another applicable deadline.
- Confirming without reading the final offer: Before submitting a change, check the amount due or credited, the new itinerary, and the new fare conditions.
Questions to ask before approving a change
If the website does not make the terms clear, ask the airline or ticket issuer for specific answers before authorizing the transaction:
- Can this ticket be reissued at the lower fare I found, for the same itinerary and passengers?
- What is the total amount I will pay or receive after all change or cancellation charges?
- Will the difference go to my original payment method, become airline credit, or be lost?
- If it is a credit, who may use it, what bookings can use it, and what are its booking and travel deadlines?
- Does my booking channel require the original ticket issuer to process the change?
- Will the new ticket have different restrictions, benefits, or cancellation terms?
Keep the answers and the final confirmation with your travel records. If the terms differ from what you expected, do not complete the change until the issuer explains the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Will an airline automatically refund me if my ticket price drops?
Usually not. A lower fare does not by itself trigger an adjustment. Check the ticket’s change or reissue terms and ask the airline or ticket issuer what will happen to the difference.

Can I get the difference back as cash?
Possibly, but it depends on the fare and the reissue terms. A refundable fare may return the difference to the original payment method; a nonrefundable ticket may produce airline credit or no useful value. Get confirmation before changing.
Should I cancel and rebook when the fare drops?
Compare canceling and booking again with changing or reissuing the ticket. Include any charges, lost value, new fare conditions, and whether the replacement fare is still available. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that refunding and rebooking may cost less in some cases, but it is not always available or better.
Can I get a credit if I bought Basic Economy?
Possibly, but Basic Economy restrictions vary by airline and ticket. American says some eligible AAdvantage members may be able to cancel certain Basic Economy tickets for travel credit subject to a fee. Check the terms for your exact reservation.

Can I request a fare adjustment if I booked through a travel agency?
Ask the ticket issuer who must process the change. An agency-issued ticket may need to be handled by that agency, and an offer limited to direct bookings may not apply. Confirm any agency or airline charges before authorizing a change.
When should I check cancellation rules?
Before canceling and before the first flight departs. American says remaining ticket value can be lost if the ticket is not canceled before departure. Other deadlines and outcomes depend on your ticket’s terms.
The Bottom Line
A lower airfare is an opportunity to check your ticket, not a guaranteed refund. Compare the same itinerary and fare conditions, ask the airline or ticket issuer what a change or cancellation will actually return, and account for fees, credit restrictions, and deadlines. Proceed only when the confirmed net value is worth giving up your current ticket terms.
