How to Fix Netflix Not Working on Your TV, Phone, or Browser

Find out whether Netflix is failing on one device or across your home connection, then follow the right steps for a TV, Android, iPhone or iPad, or browser.

When Netflix stops working, first find out whether the problem is limited to one device or affects your home internet connection more broadly. Check another internet-connected app and another device, note Netflix’s exact error message or code, then try the fix that matches the result. This helps distinguish a connection problem from an app, device, or compatibility issue.

Work from the least disruptive checks toward steps that reset or remove app data. Retry Netflix after each step so you can tell what changed. If you see a specific error message or code, use its exact wording to find Netflix’s instructions rather than assuming every failure has the same cause.

Start by identifying what is failing

Netflix errors such as “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix” commonly point to a connection problem that prevents the device from reaching Netflix. Netflix describes this wording as typically indicating a network connectivity issue. But a single device’s app data, device-specific connection, or compatibility can also be involved. Use these checks before resetting anything or changing settings.

  1. On the device where Netflix fails, open another internet-connected app or run the device’s network test, if it has one. This helps show whether the device can reach the internet at all. If the other app works, that does not prove Netflix itself is working; it simply makes a general connection failure less likely.
  2. Try Netflix on another device using the same home connection. If Netflix works there, focus first on the original device, its Netflix app, or its compatibility. If Netflix also fails on other devices, check whether other internet services work before deciding the problem is Netflix-specific.
  3. If possible, try the affected device on a different connection, such as mobile data. Be mindful of your mobile plan. A difference between Wi-Fi and mobile service can help narrow the problem to the home connection, but it does not identify the exact cause by itself.
  4. Write down the exact wording of the error and any error code. Search that wording or code in the Netflix Help Center rather than assuming every Netflix failure has the same cause. A message such as “Not connected to the Internet” is useful context, but the full message and code are more helpful than a general description like “Netflix is broken.”

Use the pattern of failures to choose the next step. If one app fails on one device, check that device’s connection. If Netflix alone fails on one device while other services work, look at the app, platform support, and the exact error. If several devices or services fail on the same connection, investigate the modem, router, and ISP before removing app data.

What you find What it points toward Next step
Other apps work, but Netflix fails on one device A Netflix app, device-specific connection, or compatibility issue is more likely than a household-wide internet failure. Follow the steps for that device below, then look up the exact Netflix error.
Netflix and other internet apps fail on one device, while other household devices work The affected device’s network connection may be the issue. Check its network connection and restart the device. Use the device maker’s network test or instructions if needed.
Several devices or internet apps fail on the same home connection A home-network or internet-service problem is more likely. Restart the modem and router as described below. If the trouble persists, contact your internet service provider (ISP).
Netflix fails on an older TV or streaming device, but internet apps otherwise work The device may no longer be compatible with Netflix. Check whether Netflix currently supports the exact model before changing your network or buying another device.

Fix Netflix on a TV or streaming player

Try these actions in order, retrying Netflix after each one. Stop when playback works; there is no need to move on to a more disruptive step. TV menus and error screens differ by brand and model, so use the options available on your device rather than expecting every screen to match these labels.

  1. Fully power off the TV or player. Do not leave it in standby. Netflix’s general TV guidance says to leave the device off for 15 seconds, then turn it back on and try Netflix again. This is a simple first check before changing the network or signing out.
  2. Check whether the device is online. Open another internet-connected app or run the TV or player’s network test. If those fail too, focus on the connection rather than reinstalling Netflix. If other apps work but Netflix does not, keep the exact Netflix message or code and continue with the Netflix-specific steps.
  3. Restart the home network if other connection checks point to a network issue. Turn off the TV or player. Unplug the modem and router from power for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait about one minute for the connection to return before trying Netflix. Some equipment takes longer to reconnect, so allow more time if the router or modem has not finished starting up. Do not treat the one-minute wait as a guarantee that every device is ready; retry once the network equipment has reconnected.
  4. Sign out and back in if Netflix opens but will not load or play. Some error screens offer a More Details menu with options such as Reload Netflix, Sign out, or Reset. Use only the option actually shown on your device; menus vary by model. If a reload option is offered, it may be a less disruptive action to try before resetting. Signing out means you will need to sign in again.
  5. Use the exact error to choose the next step. Search the code or wording in the Netflix Help Center. If the instructions do not resolve a device-specific problem, contact Netflix or the device maker, depending on what the error indicates. If multiple services or devices remain offline after the network restarts, contact your ISP instead of repeatedly changing Netflix settings.

When Netflix is missing from the TV’s app list or the device cannot use the service despite working internet apps, check compatibility before assuming there is a connection fault. Some older devices have lost support; the compatibility section below explains what to verify before considering another streaming player.

Fix Netflix on an Android phone or tablet

Start with a restart and a connection check before clearing app data or reinstalling Netflix. Those later steps can remove downloaded shows and movies and sign you out, so make sure you know your Netflix sign-in details first. Android menu names vary by device and software version. The order matters: there is little reason to erase local app data if the phone simply has no working connection.

  1. Restart the phone or tablet. Open Netflix again after the device has restarted. If the app still fails, check whether the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile service as expected.
  2. Test the connection. Try another app that uses the internet. If other apps also fail, check the device’s Wi-Fi or mobile connection and consider restarting the home network. If other apps work, record the Netflix error and continue with the app-focused checks.
  3. Update Android and Netflix if updates are available. Follow the update options provided by your device and app store; the exact menu labels can differ. After updating, open Netflix and test again before taking the more disruptive step of clearing data.
  4. Clear Netflix app data only if simpler checks did not help. Find Netflix in your Android device’s app settings and use the available storage or app-data controls. The path and labels differ across manufacturers. Clearing the data removes Netflix downloads and signs you out, so you will need your account credentials to sign in again.
  5. Reinstall Netflix if the problem continues. Uninstall and reinstall the app using the device’s normal app-store process. This also removes downloads and requires you to sign in again. If the same error remains after reinstalling, look up the exact message or code instead of repeating the same reset.

If you rely on downloaded episodes or films for travel or times when you may be offline, consider that before clearing data or uninstalling. These actions remove those downloads. Do them only when you are ready to download titles again, if needed, and can sign in to the account.

Fix Netflix on an iPhone or iPad

If Netflix displays “Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection,” begin by checking the connection and the cellular-data setting. Netflix’s guidance also recommends restarting the home network when connection trouble persists. The goal is to establish whether the device can connect, and whether Netflix is allowed to use the connection you are trying.

  1. Test the connection. Open another app that uses the internet. Netflix recommends using fast.com as a connection test. If the test or other apps cannot connect, troubleshoot the device’s connection or home network before changing Netflix settings. If other services work but Netflix does not, keep the full message and any code for a more targeted Help Center search.
  2. Check cellular data for Netflix if you are using mobile service. In the iPhone or iPad’s settings, confirm that cellular data is allowed for Netflix. If you are using Wi-Fi, check that the device is connected to the intended network instead. The cellular setting is relevant when you expect Netflix to use mobile service; changing it will not resolve a problem with the home Wi-Fi itself.
  3. Restart the home network if the connection remains unreliable. Turn off the streaming device, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for them to come back online. Some equipment needs more than about one minute. Then retest the connection and try Netflix again.
  4. If you need to watch immediately, use an existing download if available. Netflix’s cited guidance says downloaded titles can play offline while you remain signed in. This does not repair the connection, but it may let you watch a title already downloaded to the device. Do not sign out or remove the app if you are relying on that offline option.

Fix Netflix in a computer browser

Browser playback depends on Netflix’s supported browser and the operating system and browser versions it currently requires. Netflix lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari for supported computer use, but requirements vary by platform and can change. Do not rely on an old version number from an unrelated guide. Browser support and playback resolution are also separate considerations: a supported browser does not necessarily mean every setup offers the same playback capabilities.

  1. Check the current Netflix browser and system requirements. Use Netflix’s live requirements information to confirm support for your browser, operating system, and device. The requirements can change, so check the current listing for your own platform rather than relying on a version number copied elsewhere.
  2. Update both the browser and operating system. Install available updates, then close and reopen the browser before testing Netflix again. Keeping the browser and OS current helps ensure the setup meets Netflix’s current requirements; it does not by itself rule out a network, account, or other device issue.
  3. Check whether other sites or internet apps connect. If they also fail, investigate the connection. If only Netflix fails, search the exact Netflix message or code in the Netflix Help Center. Do not assume that a Netflix-only browser problem means the home connection has failed if other services remain available.
  4. Try a different supported browser if one is available. This can help determine whether the problem is limited to a particular browser, but it does not establish that the network or account is otherwise problem-free. Confirm that the alternative browser is supported for your computer’s operating system.

Supported browsers, operating-system versions, and playback capabilities are not interchangeable across platforms. If you need a particular playback resolution, check Netflix’s current requirements for your specific setup instead of assuming that browser support guarantees the same resolution everywhere. Because those requirements are platform-specific and can change, the current Netflix listing is more useful than a fixed list of version numbers.

When to contact your internet provider

Contact your ISP when multiple devices or other internet services have trouble on the same home connection, or when connection checks continue to fail after restarting the modem and router. Netflix advises checking the device and network connection and contacting the ISP if the problem persists. A Netflix-only failure on one device, while other apps and devices connect, is a reason to investigate that device or its Netflix error first.

When you contact the ISP, give them concrete details:

  • Whether the issue affects one device or several.
  • Whether affected devices use Wi-Fi or a wired connection.
  • Whether other internet-connected apps work on those devices.
  • The time the problem started and whether it persists after the modem and router reconnect.
  • Whether Netflix fails on other devices using the same connection, or only on one particular TV, phone, tablet, or computer.

These details help describe the scope without guessing at a cause. If only the Netflix app on a single device fails while other apps and household devices work, note that distinction and look up the displayed Netflix code before asking the ISP to troubleshoot a broad connection problem.

Check compatibility before replacing a TV or player

Some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer have Netflix. That possibility matters when Netflix is missing from the device or the device is no longer supported; it is not a general fix for a network error, an account issue, or a temporary app failure. First check whether the device connects to the internet and whether the problem is limited to Netflix. Compatibility becomes a more relevant explanation when the device is older and the app is unavailable or the model is no longer supported.

Before buying a streaming device, verify that Netflix currently supports the exact model and check that your TV has the connection the device needs. Netflix lists the Amazon Fire TV/Stick family among supported TV streaming devices, but support for a device family does not confirm that every model, generation, or setup is suitable. Confirm current model compatibility and the TV’s available connection first.

A streaming player is a possible workaround only when the TV itself has lost Netflix compatibility and the player is supported for the intended setup. It will not repair a weak or unavailable home connection, fix an account issue, or resolve a temporary failure on a supported device. Compare potential devices by current Netflix support, the connection or port requirements, whether they work with your TV, and how they are set up. Check current model details before buying; a product family name alone is not enough to guarantee suitability.

Use the error message to avoid the wrong fix

Netflix’s wording can help narrow the problem, but it does not by itself prove the cause. “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix” commonly indicates that the device cannot reach Netflix. On iPhone or iPad, “Failed to connect to Netflix. Please check your device’s network connection” is a prompt to test the connection and check cellular-data access when using mobile service. “Not connected to the Internet” likewise makes checking the device’s network a sensible first step, but test other apps and devices to establish how broad the problem is.

Record the complete message and any displayed code, then search it in the Netflix Help Center. A code-specific instruction can be more useful than repeating general resets, especially when the device is online but Netflix alone is failing. If an error screen provides More Details with a reload, sign-out, or reset choice, use the option your device actually shows and follow any code-specific instructions. Menus and available choices are not identical across TVs and players.

A useful rule is to match the fix to the evidence: check the network when other apps or devices fail too; check app data, updates, and sign-in when Netflix alone fails on a phone or tablet; check current browser requirements on a computer; and verify model support when an older TV no longer offers Netflix. If the pattern is unclear, collect the message and repeat the connection check on another device before making a disruptive change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Netflix say it can’t connect?

A message such as “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix” typically points to a network connectivity issue that is preventing the device from reaching Netflix. It can also be isolated to one device’s app or compatibility. Check another internet-connected app on that device and try Netflix on another device using the same connection, then search the exact error wording or code in the Netflix Help Center.

What should I do first if Netflix is not working on my TV?

Fully turn off the TV or player rather than leaving it in standby, leave it off for 15 seconds, and restart it. Then test another internet-connected app or run the device’s network test. If other services also fail, restart the modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, reconnecting them, and allowing time for the connection to return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing Netflix data on Android delete my downloads?

Yes. Clearing Netflix app data or uninstalling the app removes downloaded shows and movies and signs you out. Try a device restart and connection check first, and make sure you have your Netflix sign-in details available before using either step.

Can I watch Netflix offline on an iPhone or iPad if the connection fails?

Netflix’s guidance says downloaded titles can play offline while you remain signed in. This can help if the title is already downloaded, but it does not fix the connection. Avoid signing out or removing the app if you are relying on that offline download.

Which browsers can I use to watch Netflix on a computer?

Netflix lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari for supported computer use. Requirements for the browser, operating system, and playback capabilities vary by platform and can change, so check Netflix’s current browser and system requirements for your setup rather than relying on old version numbers.

Could my older TV have lost Netflix support?

Yes. Some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer have Netflix. Verify current support for the exact model before changing network settings or buying another device. A compatible streaming player may be an option if the TV itself is no longer supported, but it will not fix a network or account problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact my internet provider about Netflix?

Contact your ISP when multiple devices or other internet services have trouble on the same home connection, or when connection checks still fail after restarting the modem and router. Tell them whether the issue affects one device or several and whether those devices use Wi-Fi or a cable. If only Netflix on one device fails while other apps work, investigate that device and its exact Netflix error first.

The Bottom Line

Start with scope: test another app and another device, then record Netflix’s exact error or code. Restart the affected device, use the TV, Android, iPhone/iPad, or browser steps that match your setup, and reserve app-data removal or device replacement for cases where simpler checks point that way. Contact your ISP when connection trouble affects multiple devices or services, and verify exact model support before buying a streaming player.
