Check Form 1099-DA to see whether the broker reported your digital-asset basis to the IRS. That determines how to correct the transaction on Form 8949: when basis was not reported, generally enter your documented correct basis in column (e) and zero in column (g), unless another adjustment applies. When basis was reported but is wrong, enter the reported amount in column (e) and use column (g) to make the adjustment calculated under the IRS instructions. Keep records that support the correct basis and report the transaction even if the form is missing or incomplete.

How do I fix the cost basis on my crypto 1099?

For a U.S. federal return, compare the Form 1099-DA with your acquisition and transaction records, then report the transaction using Form 8949 and Schedule D as directed by the IRS. The key question is not simply whether a number appears on your copy of the statement. It is whether the basis was reported to the IRS.

Read the form’s box 2 indicator. If box 2 says basis was reported to the IRS, follow the reported-basis correction path. If basis was not reported to the IRS, follow the unreported-basis path. Do not treat a customer-facing figure alone as proof that the broker furnished that basis to the IRS. The Form 8949 instructions explain how to enter each case.

Form 1099-DA basis status Form 8949 column (e) Form 8949 column (g) What supports the correct basis
Basis was not reported to the IRS Enter your correct basis, established from your records Enter zero for the basis correction unless another adjustment applies Acquisition records and related transaction details
Basis was reported to the IRS but is incorrect Enter the amount reported to the IRS Enter the correction calculated using the IRS worksheet Acquisition records and related transaction details

Column (e) is not handled the same way in both cases. If the broker reported basis, do not replace the reported figure in column (e) with your corrected figure. Retain the reported amount there and use the adjustment process in column (g) to reconcile it to your documented basis. The Form 8949 instructions provide the worksheet and reporting details; use them for the applicable tax year rather than guessing at an adjustment.

This distinction preserves a connection between the information return the IRS received and the amount you believe is correct. Column (e) reflects the reported basis in the reported-basis case; column (g) records the correction. If the IRS was not furnished basis, there is no reported basis figure to preserve in column (e), so you enter the correct amount supported by your records. Follow the instructions for the full entry, since another adjustment could apply for reasons beyond a basis mismatch.

Use Form 8949 with Schedule D as instructed. The Schedule D instructions direct taxpayers with missing or incorrect Form 1099-DA basis to Form 8949. A blank basis field does not mean the transaction can be left off the return.

Why is my crypto cost basis missing?

Form 1099-DA applies to broker reporting for digital-asset transactions beginning in calendar year 2025. In its January 2026 tax tip, the IRS said most statements for 2025 will not include basis, so taxpayers will need to calculate basis to determine gain or loss. That is a qualitative description from the IRS, not a stated percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reporting rules phase in. Under the 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions, brokers are required to report basis for certain covered assets acquired after 2025. For noncovered securities, brokers are not required to report basis, although they may report it voluntarily. Whether a specific asset is covered depends on the applicable reporting rules and acquisition timing; do not assume that every transaction on a statement follows the same basis-reporting treatment.

That means a missing figure can reflect reporting status rather than a mistake by the broker. A 2025 transaction may appear on a Form 1099-DA even though the statement does not provide basis. In later reporting periods, basis reporting depends on the covered-asset rules and when the asset was acquired. Check the tax year, the applicable form instructions, and the reporting indicator for the particular transaction instead of assuming that the rules for one asset or year apply to all the others.

Missing basis on the statement does not remove your responsibility to determine and report the transaction. The IRS says taxpayers must report related digital-asset income, gains, or losses whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. Its digital-assets guidance describes basis generally as the cost of the digital asset in U.S. dollars and identifies acquisition and disposition information relevant to working out gain or loss.

Steps to correct a missing or incorrect basis

  1. Identify the tax year and transaction. Match the Form 1099-DA entry to the disposition in your records. Confirm the asset, units, date, and account involved. The 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions apply to the form revision for reporting the relevant period; use the instructions that match the return year you are filing. Do not mix records for different tax years or assume that a form revision applies to a return for another year.
  2. Check whether basis was reported to the IRS. Inspect box 2 on Form 1099-DA. Follow the relevant Form 8949 path in the table above. Do not infer reporting status just from the number displayed on a customer statement.
  3. Establish your basis from source records. Gather evidence of what you paid or the value relevant to how you acquired the asset, the quantity, and the acquisition date and time. Include transaction fees where your records show they are relevant, and retain the disposition information, including the related sale or disposition details and value. Basis depends on how the asset came to you, so not every acquisition can be resolved by looking only at a purchase price. Check that the records refer to the same asset and units later disposed of, rather than relying on a general account balance.
  4. Reconcile activity across accounts and wallets. Trace transfers between exchanges, wallets, and other accounts you control. A movement between your own wallets should not be mistaken for a new acquisition or a sale merely because it appears as an incoming or outgoing transaction on one platform. Match the outgoing and incoming records and classify the transaction using the underlying facts.
  5. Complete Form 8949 using the correct path. If the IRS was not furnished basis, enter your documented basis in column (e) and generally zero in column (g) for the basis correction. If basis was reported but is wrong, keep the reported figure in column (e), calculate the adjustment with the worksheet in the Form 8949 instructions, and enter the correction in column (g). Other adjustments may affect a transaction, so follow the form instructions for the full entry.
  6. Carry the result through Schedule D. Use Form 8949 and Schedule D according to their instructions, and check that the transaction is included even when the statement omitted basis or was not issued.
  7. Keep the workpapers and evidence. Retain the transaction history and calculation that support the figures and method on your return. If you contact the issuer about a corrected statement, continue preparing from your records and the IRS instructions; the IRS guidance does not establish a universal correction timeline or require waiting for a corrected form before filing.

A useful final review is to trace each reported disposition back to an acquisition record and confirm that the quantity, date, and asset line up. If a transaction export shows a sale but the corresponding acquisition is absent, identify the gap rather than silently treating the sale proceeds as the basis. If a statement and your records disagree, preserve both and document why the amount used on the return differs. This makes the correction explainable if you revisit the return or need to substantiate it later.

What records can establish the correct basis?

The IRS says taxpayers must keep sufficient records to establish the positions taken on federal income tax returns. Its digital-asset guidance identifies transaction date and time, quantity, fair market value, and basis among the inputs relevant to gain-or-loss calculation. A useful reconstruction should link the asset’s acquisition to the later disposition rather than rely on a single total from one exchange.

For each relevant acquisition, organize the asset type, acquisition date and time, units acquired, and fair market value in U.S. dollars or the documented amount paid. For each disposition, retain the date and transaction details, units disposed of, and value. Keeping these elements together helps distinguish a missing broker basis from a missing personal record and supports the calculation you use on Form 8949.

  • Exchange records: transaction exports, purchase confirmations, fills, and account statements from each platform involved.
  • Wallet history: records that identify quantities and timestamps for transfers and activity outside an exchange account.
  • Acquisition evidence: confirmations or other contemporaneous records showing the asset received, when it was received, and the dollars paid or other relevant value.
  • Fees: available records of charges associated with the transaction, so the calculation reflects the facts of the transaction rather than an unsupported assumption.
  • Income records: documentation for assets received as income, since the acquisition and tax treatment may differ from a purchase.
  • Disposition records: the corresponding sale or other disposition details and value needed to match the basis to the transaction being reported.

Reconcile records across all exchanges, wallets, and accounts involved. A platform may show only one side of a transfer, while the other account records the receipt. Keep a traceable explanation of how you matched the entries and distinguished a transfer between accounts you own from a taxable disposition or a separate acquisition. IRS guidance for tax professionals specifically recommends reconciling activity spread across multiple exchanges, wallets, and accounts and documenting basis methods; see the IRS tax-professional fact sheet.

Do not treat a missing export as proof that an event did not happen, or an unexplained incoming transfer as proof of a purchase at its arrival value. Look for records on both sides of a movement: an exchange withdrawal, wallet transaction history, a receiving-account deposit, or a contemporaneous confirmation. If a platform offers downloadable history, save the relevant records with the return workpapers so the calculation is reproducible.

What if the 1099-DA has the wrong cost basis?

First determine whether the incorrect amount was reported to the IRS. If it was, put that reported amount in Form 8949 column (e) and use the worksheet to calculate the correcting adjustment for column (g). If it was not reported to the IRS, use the correct basis in column (e) and generally enter zero in column (g) for the basis correction, unless another adjustment applies. In both cases, the correction should be supported by your records.

You can contact the statement issuer to ask about its correction process, while preparing your return from the information available and the applicable IRS instructions. The IRS materials cited here do not set one universal broker correction process or timeline. Do not invent a basis to make a blank field look complete, and do not assume a corrected statement will arrive by a particular date.

If you do ask the issuer to review the statement, keep a copy of your inquiry and any response with the records for the transaction. A corrected customer statement may help clarify what the issuer reported, but your own acquisition records remain important for establishing the basis you claim. Follow the applicable instructions for your return rather than changing column (e) simply because your records show a different number when the original basis was reported to the IRS.

How do I calculate crypto cost basis if I transferred coins between wallets?

Start by determining whether the transfer was between wallets or accounts you own and tracing the same units through both sides of the movement. An internal transfer is not, by itself, evidence of a new purchase or a sale. Preserve the source wallet’s outgoing record and the receiving wallet’s incoming record, then match them using the available transaction details, such as timing and quantity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once the asset’s history is linked, use the original acquisition records to establish its basis and connect that basis to the later disposition. If one wallet or exchange lacks history, seek exports or account records from the other platform, contemporaneous confirmations, and reliable wallet history. Do not assign a fresh basis just because an asset arrived in a different wallet. If transfers cannot be reconciled or the activity includes more than a straightforward movement between owned wallets, have the transaction classification reviewed by a qualified tax professional.

For example, if the sending account records an outgoing movement and a wallet you control shows a matching incoming movement, preserve both records and document the link. The receiving wallet’s display of an incoming amount is not, by itself, evidence that you acquired the asset at that point. The original acquisition date, quantity, and value records are what help establish the basis carried forward to a later disposition. If the amounts do not match or a transfer cannot be identified, do not force a match; investigate the discrepancy before treating the history as complete.

What if my records are incomplete?

Do not fill a missing figure with an estimate simply to populate the form. Reconstruct the history from exchange exports, wallet activity, purchase or transfer confirmations, and other reliable contemporaneous records. Note what is documented and what remains uncertain, and avoid presenting an unsupported number as established basis.

When the history spans many platforms or includes difficult-to-classify activity, a tax professional can help review the records and reporting method. The IRS specifically calls out reconciliation across multiple exchanges, wallets, and accounts, and documentation of basis methods, as useful preparation for digital-asset reporting. A software tool may help organize data, but the figures and transfer classifications still need to be checked against underlying records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use digital-asset tax software, evaluate whether it covers the exchanges and wallets in your activity, supports transparent basis-method choices, provides reconciliation controls, and produces exports you can review. Check how it handles incomplete transfer data instead of assuming an import has resolved a gap. Software can help collect and organize transaction histories, but it cannot establish missing facts without supporting records or replace your review of the return entries.

The IRS describes the recordkeeping obligation this way: “The Internal Revenue Code and regulations require taxpayers to maintain sufficient records to establish the positions taken on federal income tax returns.” Keep the evidence and an explanation of your calculation together, especially where you had to rebuild a transaction history from more than one source.

Do I need to report crypto if I didn’t get a 1099-DA?

Yes, if you had reportable digital-asset income, gains, or losses. The IRS states that these items must be reported whether or not you receive Form 1099-DA. Use your own transaction records and the applicable federal forms and instructions; the absence of a broker statement does not decide whether an event is reportable.

The same principle applies if the form arrives without basis or shows only some of the activity. A broker statement is relevant information to reconcile, not a substitute for reviewing your complete activity across accounts and wallets. Gather your records for the transaction and report the income, gain, or loss that applies under the federal rules.

Scope and situations that need separate review

This guidance covers U.S. federal reporting using IRS materials current for the 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions and the 2025 transaction reporting transition. State treatment can differ and is outside this federal filing explanation. The correct basis and reporting also depend on how an asset was acquired or received, the transaction’s classification, holding period, and the taxpayer’s complete records.

Staking, mining, gifts, inherited assets, forks, DeFi activity, and digital assets received as business income can require analysis beyond the basic broker-basis correction described here. Transfers between wallets you own also need to be distinguished from transactions that change ownership or otherwise have tax consequences. Consult the current tax-year forms and instructions and seek qualified tax advice when the facts do not fit a straightforward purchase followed by a disposition.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix the cost basis on my crypto 1099?

Check Form 1099-DA box 2 to see whether basis was reported to the IRS. If it was not reported, enter your documented correct basis in Form 8949 column (e) and generally zero in column (g) for the basis correction. If it was reported but is wrong, retain the reported amount in column (e) and use the Form 8949 worksheet to calculate the adjustment in column (g).

Why is my crypto cost basis missing?

Form 1099-DA reporting began for broker transactions in calendar year 2025, and the IRS said most 2025 statements will not include basis. Basis reporting phases in for certain covered assets acquired after 2025; brokers are not required to report basis for noncovered securities, though they may do so voluntarily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the 1099-DA has the wrong cost basis?

First determine whether the amount was reported to the IRS. If so, put that reported amount in Form 8949 column (e) and calculate the correction for column (g) using the IRS worksheet. If not, use your documented correct basis in column (e) and generally enter zero in column (g) for the basis correction. You may contact the issuer about its correction process, but the IRS guidance does not establish a universal timeline.

How do I calculate crypto cost basis if I transferred coins between wallets?

Trace the movement between accounts you own by matching the sending record with the receiving record, using details such as timing and quantity. An internal transfer does not by itself establish a new acquisition or sale. Use the original acquisition records to support basis, and investigate unmatched activity rather than assigning a new basis just because the asset arrived in another wallet.

Do I need to report crypto if I didn’t get a 1099-DA?

Yes, if you had reportable digital-asset income, gains, or losses. The IRS says taxpayers must report these items whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA.

The Bottom Line

Use your acquisition and transaction records to establish the correct basis, then check whether Form 1099-DA says that basis was reported to the IRS. That status determines whether Form 8949 column (e) contains your documented basis or the reported amount, and whether column (g) is used to make a correction. Report the transaction even when basis is missing or no 1099-DA arrived, and keep records that support your figures.
