How to Fix Common ROCm Installation and Compatibility Problems

A practical ROCm troubleshooting guide: verify your exact GPU and software stack, identify installation-method issues, and isolate host, permission, and container failures.

If ROCm will not install, cannot find your GPU, or works on the host but not in a container, start by checking the exact GPU or APU, ROCm release, operating system, and kernel against AMD’s compatibility matrix. Then trace the failure through the driver, firmware, installation method, and device permissions. ROCm is a coordinated software and hardware stack, so reinstalling it before identifying the failing layer can leave the real mismatch untouched.

First, record the system you are troubleshooting

Before changing packages or drivers, record the configuration in which the error occurs. A useful report includes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Exact GPU or APU model and, if known, its architecture.
  • ROCm version and AMD GPU driver version.
  • Operating-system release and running kernel.
  • How ROCm was installed: OS package manager, amdgpu-install, pip, tarball, or runfile.
  • Where the failure occurs: bare metal, WSL, or a container; if a container is involved, note its runtime and image.
  • For a data-center system, the server vendor and firmware bundle version, if available.
  • The complete error text and the command or application that produced it.

This inventory lets you compare like with like. “Linux with ROCm” is not a sufficiently specific configuration: support can depend on the GPU, OS, kernel, driver, and firmware together.

Check whether your exact GPU and OS combination is supported

Use AMD’s ROCm 10.0.0 compatibility matrix, dated August 25, 2026, and select the ROCm release you intend to use. Check the exact GPU or APU and the operating-system and kernel combination shown for it. If AMD distinguishes compute from graphics support for your device, check the category that matches your workload.

  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

Do not infer support from a general OS list. AMD’s ROCm Core SDK 10.0.0 release notes say, “Actual support might vary by AMD GPU or APU.” The per-device matrix is the relevant check; a supported Linux distribution in a general overview does not establish support for every GPU running it.

The 10.0.0 matrix includes device families such as Instinct MI350, MI300, MI200, and MI100, as well as Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000. It also maps particular Instinct models to LLVM targets—for example, gfx950 for MI350 and gfx942 for MI300. These are examples from that dated matrix, not a guarantee that every model in a family supports every OS or workload.

Identify which installation method you used

Use the repair, update, and removal instructions for the same method and ROCm release that installed the software. AMD’s ROCm 10.0.0 installation guide describes these methods for different workflows:

Method When it fits What to check during troubleshooting
OS package manager Standard Linux system installation. Whether the packages and repository instructions match the distribution and ROCm release.
amdgpu-install Radeon and Ryzen use cases. Whether the installer options and supported hardware match the intended workload and release.
pip Python or machine-learning workflows, typically in a virtual environment. Whether the Python environment contains the intended packages and is separate from assumptions about system-level driver support.
Tarball Controlled or portable installations. Whether the application is using the intended extracted ROCm files and compatible host components.
Runfile Guided, offline, packageless, or restricted setups. Whether the runfile is for the intended release and platform, and whether its steps completed successfully.

These methods have different scopes; they are not interchangeable repair recipes. The ROCm 10.0.0 release notes specifically mention that this release “adds support for new GPUs and APUs and fixes minor issues in the Runfile Installer.” That is a release-specific note, not evidence that a general installer error is caused by a runfile defect.

Check the driver and firmware as well as ROCm user space

AMD describes the compatibility principle this way: “ROCm depends on a coordinated stack of compatible firmware, driver, and user space components.” Compare the installed driver and ROCm user-space versions with the documentation for the same ROCm release. A package can be installed successfully while a different layer is incompatible, so package presence alone does not prove that the stack is usable.

For data-center configurations, AMD publishes driver and user-space components, while the OEM or infrastructure provider distributes firmware. If an Instinct system has a suspected firmware mismatch, identify the installed bundle through the server vendor or provider and compare it with the platform’s supported configuration. Treat a mismatch as a lead to investigate, not a confirmed cause until it is checked against the applicable documentation.

Diagnose “ROCm not detecting GPU” or “HIP error: no devices found”

Separate installation status from device discovery. First establish whether the operating system and AMD driver recognize the device; then check whether ROCm user space enumerates it. For an OpenCL-specific application, perform the corresponding OpenCL check as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm support. Verify the exact GPU, ROCm release, OS, and kernel in the matrix before treating missing enumeration as an installation defect.
  2. Check the installation record. Use the package manager or environment appropriate to the installation method to confirm which ROCm components are present. A pip environment, tarball, or runfile installation will not necessarily be represented like an OS package-manager installation.
  3. Test ROCm discovery. AMD’s ROCm 7.2.4 Linux guide documents rocminfo as a way to inspect ROCm discovery. Check whether the intended GPU appears, rather than relying only on a successful package installation.
  4. Test OpenCL only when relevant. The same 7.2.4 guide documents clinfo for OpenCL checks. An OpenCL result addresses that path; it does not by itself establish that every other ROCm workload is configured correctly.

The discovery-tool examples above come from AMD’s ROCm 7.2.4 installation guide. Confirm tool availability and exact instructions in the guide for your installed release.

When ROCm works on the host but not in Docker

A container sees only the devices exposed to it. If discovery succeeds on the host but fails inside Docker, compare the two environments before reinstalling ROCm on the host. In particular, check whether the container was given access to the GPU device nodes required by the installed release.

AMD’s ROCm 7.2.4 guide uses /dev/kfd and /dev/dri in its Docker example. Treat those paths as a version-labeled operational example, and follow the container instructions for your own ROCm release rather than copying an older command unverified. Run the relevant discovery check both on the host and inside the container: different results point toward device exposure or container configuration rather than a host-wide discovery failure.

Check Linux device permissions

If the GPU is exposed but a non-root user cannot access it, inspect the device permissions and the user’s group membership. AMD’s ROCm 7.2.4 Linux guide describes the video and render groups for GPU access. Compare the current user’s access with the instructions for the installed release and distribution. Do not assume group names or exact setup commands are universal across releases and systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a container, check permissions from inside the container too. Host group membership does not prove that the container has been given the required device nodes or access to them.

Choose the right next step for the symptom

Symptom First useful check What the result helps distinguish
Installer fails or stops partway through Record the install method, ROCm release, platform, and full error; compare the procedure with that release’s guide. A method or platform mismatch versus a release-specific installation failure.
Packages appear installed, but no GPU is listed Check matrix support, driver state, and ROCm enumeration with the release-appropriate tools. Unsupported configuration, driver or user-space mismatch, or failure at GPU discovery.
“HIP error: no devices found” Verify device support and whether ROCm enumerates the GPU in the same environment as the failing application. Whether the application is failing because the device is unavailable to its runtime environment.
Host detects the GPU; container does not Compare device-node exposure and permissions, then check discovery from inside the container. Container access or configuration versus host-level detection.
OpenCL application fails but other checks differ Use an OpenCL-specific check such as the clinfo method documented for ROCm 7.2.4, after confirming current-release instructions. An OpenCL-path issue versus general ROCm device discovery.

Escalate with a reproducible problem report

If the matrix shows your combination is supported and the problem remains, send AMD or your system vendor a compact report containing:

  • GPU or APU model, ROCm release, OS release, kernel, and driver version.
  • Installation method and the relevant installation log or complete error text.
  • Whether the failure occurs on bare metal, in WSL, or only in a container.
  • The outcome of the applicable GPU-discovery check, including whether it differs between host and container.
  • For an Instinct server, the OEM or infrastructure provider and firmware bundle version, if available.

For a data-center system, include the firmware details because AMD assigns firmware distribution to OEMs and infrastructure providers. Exact versions and a clear host-versus-container distinction make it possible to investigate a supported-stack issue without guessing at the failing layer.
