How to Find U.S. Tech Jobs That Sponsor H-1B Visas

A practical, evidence-based workflow for finding U.S. technology jobs that may sponsor H-1B visas—starting with DOL LCA disclosures and ending with confirmation for the exact requisition.

The most reliable way to find potential H-1B sponsors is to combine two kinds of evidence: historical Labor Condition Application (LCA) filings in the U.S. Department of Labor’s public data and a current employer confirmation for the exact job. An LCA can show that an employer previously filed for a technology role at a particular location; it is not a job advertisement, a promise to sponsor you, or proof that a visa was approved.

Start with the Department of Labor’s latest Office of Foreign Labor Certification (OFLC) disclosure files, narrow the results to your occupation and acceptable work locations, then check the employer’s live careers pages. Before applying—or at the recruiter screen—ask whether that requisition supports new H-1B sponsorship or an H-1B transfer for your specific situation.

What an H-1B sponsorship record actually tells you

Most public evidence you will find is an LCA record. An employer files an LCA with the Department of Labor before it can submit an H-1B petition to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The LCA identifies the occupation, worksite, wage information and other labor-condition details. If the Department of Labor certifies it, the employer may use that certification in a petition to USCIS.

Those are separate steps. The Department of Labor does not approve the H-1B visa through the LCA process, and an LCA certification does not establish that the employer hired anyone, that USCIS approved a petition, or that the employer will sponsor a future applicant. The Department of Labor’s H-1B Advisor explains the sequence and the roles of the agencies.

Use filings as leads. Treat the employer’s current job description and a direct answer from recruiting as the evidence that matters for an opening you want.

Step 1: Define the job you can realistically pursue

A broad search for “tech sponsors” produces a misleading list. A large employer may have filed LCAs for many occupations, business units and locations that do not match your background or work authorization. Write down your target before opening the data.

  • Role family: for example, software developer, data scientist, systems analyst, cybersecurity specialist or product-focused engineering role.
  • Level: entry level, mid-career, senior, staff or manager. A filing for a staff engineer does not show that an entry-level opening is available.
  • Skills and degree: list the technologies, domain knowledge and degree field you can document.
  • Work locations: include cities where you can work and whether you can relocate. An LCA is tied to a worksite and may not fit a remote arrangement.
  • Immigration situation: distinguish a request for first-time sponsorship from a transfer, a change of employer, or an extension. Employers may treat those cases differently.

This target profile gives you filters for the government data and prevents you from mistaking a high filing count for a personal opportunity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Open the official OFLC disclosure files

The Department of Labor publishes LCA disclosure data on its OFLC Performance Data page. The page provides quarterly and fiscal-year files and the record layouts needed to interpret the columns. As currently listed, the FY2026 Q3 LCA release covers determinations issued from October 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. Fiscal-year files are cumulative, so a later release can include the earlier quarters.

Download the latest file that covers your target period, along with its record layout. Field names and formats changed beginning in fiscal year 2020; using the layout avoids treating a column as the wrong kind of date, status or wage. You can work in a spreadsheet for a modest list or use a database for a large file.

The Department of Labor says the files contain selected information from application tables, employer-submitted fields and system-generated metadata. Personally identifiable information is omitted. Open-text fields may not be extractable, and typographical errors or other anomalies can occur. Some pending matters do not appear until a final determination, and a small percentage of determinations can change after an appeal or redetermination.

Step 3: Filter records for relevant technology employers

  1. Filter by determination date and fiscal year. Start with the most recent quarter or fiscal year, then compare earlier years to see whether activity is recurring. Record the latest determination date rather than assuming every row represents a new hire.
  2. Filter the occupation and job-title fields. Match the filing’s occupation code and title to your target role. Read the record layout to confirm the exact field names. Include close variants, but inspect them individually; “analyst” or “engineer” can describe very different work.
  3. Filter by worksite location. Keep only cities, states or geographic areas where you can work. A company may file in one location while advertising the role elsewhere.
  4. Review determination status. Separate certified, denied, withdrawn, incomplete or other statuses shown in the file. Do not combine unlike statuses into one sponsorship count.
  5. Group by employer and relevant role. Repeated, recent filings for occupations and locations that match your profile make an employer worth investigating. They do not prove a current vacancy or a policy of sponsoring every candidate.
  6. Keep the OFLC case number and latest determination date. The performance page says records are keyed by OFLC case number and latest determination date. Those fields help you avoid double-counting and let you explain exactly what you found when contacting an employer.

Do not publish or rely on a static “top sponsors” ranking without defining the fiscal year, occupations, locations and statuses counted. A raw filing total can include unrelated roles, duplicate activity, multiple worksites and cases that never became an approved petition.

How to judge an employer prospect

Use the following framework for each employer. The first four columns describe historical evidence; the last two require a current check with the employer.

Axis What to examine What it can and cannot establish
Recency Latest determination date and fiscal year Recent activity is more useful than an old record, but it is still historical.
Role relevance Occupation, title, level and duties A matching occupation is a lead, not proof that your exact job exists.
Location relevance Listed worksite and your ability to work there An LCA for one site does not automatically cover a different site or arrangement.
Status and trend Determination status and repeated activity across fiscal years Shows filing behavior; it does not equal hires or approvals.
Live vacancy and sponsorship Current requisition, application questions and recruiter response Only the employer can confirm whether this opening supports your case.
Compensation context Current role’s level, location, salary range and total compensation compared with the filing An LCA wage entry is not your personal offer.

Step 4: Turn a filing into a live job lead

For every employer that survives your filters, leave the government data and search the employer’s own careers site. Search the role title, location and department rather than relying only on a general “visa sponsorship” keyword. A company can have a sponsorship policy while a particular team or requisition cannot use it.

Inspect the complete job posting

  • Look for statements such as “will sponsor,” “sponsorship available,” “not able to sponsor,” or “must have unrestricted work authorization.”
  • Read the application’s work-authorization questions. Some forms ask whether you now or in the future need sponsorship; answer accurately.
  • Check the listed worksite, remote rules, seniority and degree requirements against the LCA records you found.
  • Save the requisition number, posting date and closing date. Job pages can change or disappear, and a recruiter will need the exact opening.

Search beyond the employer’s home page

Use reputable job boards to locate a vacancy, then verify it on the employer’s own site before treating it as current. Aggregators can retain an expired advertisement or omit a sentence about work authorization. If you cannot find the requisition on the company site, ask whether it is still open instead of assuming the listing is active.

Step 5: Ask the recruiter a precise sponsorship question

Do not ask only, “Do you sponsor H-1Bs?” That can produce a generic company-level answer. Ask about the requisition and your immigration path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “For requisition [number], can the company file a new H-1B petition for a candidate who needs initial sponsorship?”
  • “If I already hold H-1B status, does this role support an H-1B change of employer or transfer?”
  • “Does the listed worksite and salary range apply to the position for which the company would file?”
  • “At what stage should I provide immigration documents, and who makes the final sponsorship determination?”

Replace the bracketed requisition number with the actual number in your message; template syntax belongs only in your private notes, not in a submitted application. Keep the response in writing when possible. Recruiting may need to refer the question to immigration counsel or a mobility team, and an informal answer from someone unfamiliar with the process is not a guarantee.

Check whether the role and your qualifications fit H-1B rules

The Department of Labor describes a specialty occupation as work requiring specialized knowledge and at least a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in the specific specialty. USCIS separately reviews whether the proposed position meets the specialty-occupation requirements and whether the proposed worker meets the statutory qualifications. A technology title alone is not enough.

Compare the posting’s actual duties and required degree field with your education and experience. Save the final job description, because duties can matter more than a broad title. If the posting accepts any bachelor’s degree, does not require specialized knowledge, or describes mostly non-specialty work, ask the employer how its immigration team evaluates the role rather than assuming eligibility.

The statutory H-1B cap is 65,000 visas annually, plus 20,000 under the advanced-degree exemption, according to the Department of Labor’s program information. Those are program limits, not an estimate of your chance of receiving sponsorship or selection. An employer can be willing to sponsor while a cap or case-specific issue still affects the outcome.

Understand wage and location information

An LCA’s required wage is the higher of the employer’s actual wage for similarly qualified employees or the prevailing wage for the occupation and area. The applicable worksite, occupation and level therefore matter when you compare a filing with a current job.

Use the filing wage as context, not as a promised salary. A historical record may cover a different level, office, date or compensation structure than the live posting. Compare:

  • the LCA worksite with the job’s current office or approved remote arrangement;
  • the filing occupation and level with the posting’s duties and seniority;
  • the filing’s wage information with the current salary range, bonus, equity and benefits, if disclosed; and
  • the cost of living and relocation costs for the actual location.

Do not infer that an employer will offer you the filing amount, and do not reject a role solely because a historical figure differs from a current range. The figures may describe different jobs and dates.

Know what happens after a positive lead

  1. Employer chooses a role and candidate. The company decides whether the job is suitable for sponsorship and whether you meet its hiring requirements.
  2. LCA filing with the Department of Labor. The employer submits the labor-condition application for the relevant occupation, worksite and wage. The Department of Labor reviews the LCA under its process.
  3. Certification, if issued. A certified LCA can support the next filing, but it is not an H-1B approval.
  4. Petition to USCIS. USCIS reviews the offered job, specialty-occupation evidence and the worker’s qualifications. The FLAG LCA page describes the LCA program, and the Department of Labor’s H-1B Advisor explains the relationship between the LCA and petition.
  5. Further immigration steps. Depending on your status and location, additional processes may apply. Ask qualified immigration counsel about your individual circumstances rather than relying on a filing spreadsheet.

Use public-access records as a second check

The Department of Labor’s H-1B Advisor public-access page describes access to specified employer LCA records. Use it alongside the downloadable OFLC files when you need to inspect an employer’s available records or understand what information is public. The same limitations apply: records are selected disclosures, not a complete history of every employment decision or a live vacancy database.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling an LCA a visa approval

Why it fails: The LCA is an earlier Department of Labor step; USCIS makes the petition decision.

Fix: Describe the record as a certified, denied or otherwise determined LCA and reserve “approved” for the decision actually being discussed.

Assuming a historical filing means a current job exists

Why it fails: The data is organized around cases and determinations, not open requisitions.

Fix: Find the live posting, save its requisition number and obtain a current sponsorship answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting every row as a sponsored hire

Why it fails: A record can represent a filing rather than a hire, and similar records can be counted more than once.

Fix: Group by OFLC case number, retain status and date, and report patterns rather than claiming a number of hires.

Ignoring location differences

Why it fails: The filing’s worksite and the job’s actual location may differ.

Fix: Match the worksite to the posting and ask how the employer handles relocation or remote work.

Reading “tech” as automatic specialty occupation

Why it fails: Eligibility depends on specialized duties, degree requirements and the worker’s qualifications.

Fix: Compare the detailed duties and degree field, then seek a case-specific professional opinion when needed.

Treating the wage entry as a personal offer

Why it fails: The required wage reflects an occupation, area and employer wage rules at a particular time.

Fix: Use it only as a comparison point against the current role’s level, location and compensation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a simple sponsorship-search tracker

A tracker keeps historical evidence separate from current confirmation. Use one row per employer and requisition, not one row per vague company name.

Field What to record
Employer and business unit Name shown in the OFLC record and the recruiting page.
OFLC case number The case identifier used to avoid double-counting.
Latest determination date and fiscal year When the record was determined and which release contains it.
Occupation, title and level Why the filing resembles—or does not resemble—your target.
Worksite City and state from the filing and the current posting.
Determination status Exactly as shown in the record layout.
Live requisition number and URL The current employer posting, if one exists.
Sponsorship wording Quote or paraphrase from the posting and date checked.
Recruiter contact and response Who answered, when, and whether the answer covered new sponsorship or transfer.
Compensation notes Current range, level, location and any material difference from the filing.

Mark each lead as “historical only,” “live job—unclear,” “sponsorship confirmed for requisition,” or “does not fit.” This prevents an old filing from silently becoming your assumption about a current employer policy.

Plan your job search and finances around uncertainty

H-1B sponsorship can add steps and uncertainty to an otherwise normal job change. Do not spend money on relocation, a lease or immigration services on the assumption that a historical LCA will become an offer. Wait for a written offer and a clear explanation of who handles filing costs and which conditions apply.

When comparing offers, evaluate total compensation and practical costs together: base pay, variable pay, equity, health coverage, relocation support, commuting or remote-work costs, and the cost of living at the worksite. A higher nominal salary in a more expensive location may not improve your budget. Keep an emergency reserve that reflects your own obligations and the possibility that a role, petition or start date could change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For individualized questions about status, deadlines, travel, prior petitions or eligibility, consult a qualified U.S. immigration attorney. Public filing data can help you find employers; it cannot decide your case.

A concise decision rule

Advance an employer only when all of these are true: the OFLC record is recent enough and relevant to your occupation and location; a current requisition exists; the job’s duties and degree requirements plausibly fit a specialty occupation; and the employer confirms sponsorship for that requisition and your immigration situation. If any one is missing, keep the employer as a lead rather than treating it as a sponsoring job.
