Do this for each assessment: one tax year can have several separate collection expiration dates. Because suspensions and extensions can change the calculation, ask the IRS to confirm a date you plan to rely on rather than simply adding ten years to the tax year.
What the IRS collection expiration date means
The CSED is the date the IRS collection period ends for a particular tax assessment. The general rule is that the IRS has ten years from the assessment date to collect the tax, related penalties, and interest. The Internal Revenue Service and the Taxpayer Advocate Service describe ten years from assessment as the usual baseline; it is not ten years from the tax year printed on your return, its due date, or necessarily the date you filed.

The assessment date matters because the collection period attaches to an assessment, not simply to a return year. A tax account may contain assessments for the original return balance, an amended return, a substitute-for-return (SFR) assessment, an audit, or certain civil penalties. Each assessment may have a different date and its own CSED, even if all relate to the same tax period.

You need to know which assessment you mean, and whether events on the account paused or extended its collection period. The IRS’s account record is the practical starting point; a calendar calculation from the tax year cannot establish the answer.

How to find the date on an IRS account transcript
- Get the account transcript. The IRS lists its Online Account, Form 4506-T, and its automated transcript phone line, 800-908-9946, as ways to obtain transcripts. Access methods and availability can change, so check the IRS page titled “Time IRS can collect tax” for current instructions.
- Choose the right account and tax period. Open the account transcript for the taxpayer and period relevant to the balance. A return transcript or wage-and-income transcript is not a substitute for the account transcript when you are checking collection activity and assessments.
- Go to Transactions. Find the three-digit IRS transaction code and the date shown below it. The IRS says this date generally reflects the CSED plus any time added by law. The code and date are clues in the account history, not a reason to assume every balance for that year shares one deadline.
- Check every assessment shown. Review the entries for the different assessments associated with the period. Record which assessment each potential CSED relates to; repeat the lookup for every relevant tax period and account.
- Ask the IRS to explain an unclear date. Request confirmation of the last day the IRS can collect for the specific period and ask how it computed that date. For individuals, the IRS lists 800-829-1040; for businesses, it lists 800-829-4933. If you have a recent IRS notice, use its contact number when appropriate, since it may direct you to the office handling the account.
Keep the transcript and any explanation with your tax records. If you contact the IRS, identify the tax period and the particular assessment you are asking about; asking only for “the expiration date for the year” can leave ambiguity when the account contains multiple assessments.
When comparing the transcript with an IRS explanation, focus on the same assessment in both places. Note the tax period, assessment type, assessment date, transcript transaction and date, and any collection event that could affect the period. If the IRS discusses a date that does not seem to match the transcript, ask it to reconcile the difference rather than assuming one entry applies to every amount for that year.
The transcript date is a practical pointer, not a substitute for understanding the account history. The IRS says the date generally reflects the CSED plus time added by law, and cautions that multiple events can affect a CSED. If the account has several assessments or events, a displayed date by itself may not answer which balance it applies to. The IRS can verify the last day it can collect for the particular period and explain its computation.

The tax period identifies the year or period to which an assessment relates; it does not guarantee that all assessed amounts began their collection periods together. An original return balance and a later audit assessment, for example, can be distinct assessments. The date to verify is tied to the assessment in question, so compare the assessment type and date with the relevant transcript entries and any events that affected collection time.
Substitute-for-return assessments
If the IRS makes an SFR assessment and later adjusts it after you file an accepted return, the result can depend on whether the later return increases or reduces the assessed tax. The IRS says an increase in additional tax creates a new CSED for that additional assessment. A reduced or reversed balance leaves the original CSED unchanged. Do not treat the later return date as resetting every amount on the account; establish which assessment and balance the date concerns.
Build a record for each assessment
When an account has several assessments, a useful way to organize the question is to note the tax period, assessment type, assessment date, transcript transaction and date, and any known collection event that might affect the calculation. This is an organizing aid, not an independent CSED calculation: the IRS’s recorded account history and applicable rules determine the date.

A simple comparison table can help you keep unlike dates separate:
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Tax period | Identifies the year or period, but does not by itself identify one CSED. |
| Assessment type | Distinguishes an original return balance from an amended return, SFR, audit, or certain civil penalty assessment. |
| Assessment date | The usual ten-year collection period is measured from assessment, subject to applicable suspensions or extensions. |
| Transcript transaction and date | Lets you identify the dated entry the IRS says generally reflects the CSED plus time added by law. |
| Known account events | Flags periods the IRS may need to explain, such as a pending offer, bankruptcy, or collection hearing. |
This comparison is for asking a precise question, not for producing a personal deadline by adding dates. If the account shows more than one assessment for a year, keep a separate record for each one and ask the IRS to match its explanation to the relevant assessment.
Events that can pause or add time to the collection period
The IRS and Taxpayer Advocate Service distinguish between a suspension, when the collection clock is paused, and an extension, when legally authorized time is added. Either can make the final CSED later than the ordinary ten-year baseline. Several events can affect an account, and their periods may overlap. The TAS explains that overlapping periods run at the same time and are not counted twice.
| Event | General effect described by the IRS or TAS | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Installment agreement request | The period while a request is pending generally suspends the clock. The IRS also describes 30-day periods after a rejection or proposed termination, and suspension while an eligible appeal is pending. An installment agreement in effect does not, by itself, mean the clock is suspended for its entire duration; IRS Internal Revenue Manual guidance says the CSED is not suspended while an agreement is in effect. | Check the request, decision, appeal, and agreement dates. Do not assume that every month of an active agreement adds time. |
| Bankruptcy | The period is generally suspended while the bankruptcy is pending, from the petition through discharge, dismissal, or closure. The IRS adds six months after the bankruptcy concludes. | Compare the petition and conclusion dates with the tax account history. Bankruptcy consequences depend on the proceeding and facts; use the IRS’s Publication 908, “Bankruptcy Tax Guide,” for its guidance. |
| Offer in compromise | The period is suspended while the offer is pending, for 30 days after rejection, and during a timely appeal. | Establish when the IRS received and resolved the offer, and whether an appeal was timely filed and pending. |
| Collection Due Process hearing | The period is suspended from IRS receipt of the hearing request until withdrawal or a final determination, including court appeals. If fewer than 90 days remain at the final determination, the period is extended to 90 days after that determination. | Use the IRS receipt date, not merely the date you prepared or mailed a request, and account for any court appeal and final determination. |
| Innocent spouse claim | The requesting spouse’s collection period is suspended during the applicable claim and review period. The effect does not automatically apply to the other spouse. | Confirm which spouse and assessment the claim concerns and the relevant claim and review dates. |
| Other circumstances | IRS guidance also identifies combat-zone service, certain military service, and continuous residence outside the United States for six months or more as circumstances that can affect the period. | Rules depend on the circumstances and dates. Ask the IRS to explain how it treated the event on the particular account. |
The table describes broad effects, not a complete formula for computing a personal deadline. In particular, overlapping events and detailed account histories can make a self-calculation unreliable. Compare the transcript with the IRS’s explanation rather than adding each apparent event duration to the original assessment date.
For example, a request and an appeal can create separate periods to examine, while another event may overlap part of the same time. The TAS says overlapping periods run concurrently and are not counted more than once; they should not automatically be stacked end to end. The relevant dates and treatment depend on the account. Ask the IRS which events it included and how it handled any overlap.
Also distinguish an event that suspends the clock from the mere existence of an arrangement or account entry. An installment agreement request may suspend time while pending, and certain rejection, proposed termination, or eligible appeal periods may matter. But an agreement in effect does not mean the clock is stopped throughout the agreement. This distinction is one reason the length of time a taxpayer has been making payments cannot, by itself, establish a CSED.

How to resolve a date that seems wrong
- Identify the exact discrepancy. Note the tax period, assessment, transcript entry, and date you cannot reconcile. Separate a disagreement about the assessment itself from a disagreement about how long the IRS may collect it.
- Ask the IRS for its computation. Request the last day it can collect on that assessment and ask which suspension or extension events it included. If the explanation does not address the account entries you identified, ask how those entries were treated.
- Request Taxpayer Advocate Service review if needed. If you still believe the calculation is wrong after the IRS explains it, the Taxpayer Advocate Service says you may request its review using Form 911. TAS is a further review route; it does not replace obtaining the account transcript or first identifying the disputed date.
For a complicated account or a decision with significant consequences, a qualified tax attorney or enrolled agent may help interpret the record. The IRS and TAS routes remain available, and a paid adviser cannot substitute for an official explanation of the IRS account calculation.
When you call, be specific: name the tax period and assessment, describe the transcript date you found, and ask for the last day the IRS may collect on that assessment and an explanation of the calculation. The IRS lists 800-829-1040 for individuals and 800-829-4933 for businesses; a recent notice may give a more directly relevant number. Keep notes of the explanation alongside the transcript so you can identify any unresolved mismatch.
What happens when the collection period ends
When a CSED passes, the IRS generally may no longer begin administrative or court actions to collect the remaining tax covered by that assessment. The IRS identifies an exception for a levy placed before the CSED on a fixed and determinable right to future income: the IRS may continue receiving those payments after the period ends.

Expiration does not mean every issue involving the account is resolved in the same way. If you paid after expiration, the IRS says a refund request may be possible, but that question is governed by the separate Refund Statute Expiration Date (RSED). Do not assume that a CSED automatically establishes a right to a refund or that the two dates are interchangeable.
Keep the scope of the date in mind: a CSED concerns collection of the tax covered by the assessment. If a tax year contains more than one assessment, a date for one assessment should not be treated as the end date for every amount associated with that year. Verify each relevant assessment and ask the IRS whether a particular balance remains subject to collection.
Use the transcript date as a starting point, not a guess from the tax year
The most dependable practical route is to retrieve the account transcript, locate the dated transaction in Transactions, and make sure you have matched it to the correct assessment. Because the IRS says multiple events can affect a CSED, confirm a date with the IRS when it is unclear or will guide an important decision. The ten-year rule is measured from assessment, and the recorded deadline can be affected by legally recognized pauses or added time.

The IRS describes the transcript date as generally reflecting the CSED plus time added by law. That makes it useful for finding the date, while a request for the IRS’s explanation is the way to clarify how the assessment history and collection events produced it.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the CSED on my IRS transcript?
Use an account transcript for the correct tax account and period. In the Transactions section, look for the three-digit transaction code and the date below it. The IRS says that date generally reflects the CSED plus time added by law. If it is not clear which assessment the date refers to, ask the IRS to identify the assessment and verify the last day it can collect.
Is the collection expiration date ten years after the tax year?
No. The usual ten-year period runs from the date of assessment, not from the tax year printed on the return, the return due date, or necessarily the date you filed. Suspensions and legally authorized extensions can also affect the date. Use the account transcript and request an IRS explanation instead of adding ten years to the tax year.
Can one tax year have more than one CSED?
Yes. An account may include separate assessments for an original return balance, amended return, SFR, audit, or certain civil penalties. Each assessment may have its own CSED. Match the date to the assessment and balance it concerns rather than assuming that one date applies to everything for that period.
Does an installment agreement stop the collection clock?
Not for the entire time an agreement is in effect. The period while an installment agreement request is pending generally suspends the clock; certain periods after rejection or proposed termination and while an eligible appeal is pending may also matter. IRS Internal Revenue Manual guidance says the CSED is not suspended while an installment agreement is in effect. Ask the IRS to explain which dates it counted for your account.

Can the IRS keep collecting after the CSED?
Generally, after the collection period ends, the IRS may no longer begin administrative or court actions to collect the remaining tax covered by that assessment. The IRS identifies an exception for a levy placed before expiration on a fixed and determinable right to future income; it may continue receiving those payments. If you paid after expiration, a refund request may be possible, but the separate RSED governs that issue.

Can one tax year have multiple collection expiration dates?
Yes. Separate assessments for an original return, amended return, SFR, audit, or certain civil penalties may each have their own CSED. Match each date to the assessment it concerns.
Does an installment agreement pause the CSED clock?
A pending request generally suspends the period, and certain rejection, proposed termination, or eligible appeal periods may matter. The clock is not suspended throughout an installment agreement merely because it is in effect.
What if I think the IRS has the wrong CSED?
Ask the IRS to verify the last day it can collect on the specific assessment and explain its calculation. If you still believe it is wrong, TAS says you may request review using Form 911.
