To find the cheapest gas near you, search a local fuel-price service using your location and the exact fuel type or grade your vehicle needs. Compare each station’s listed price with its distance and the time the price was updated, then weigh any detour against the likely savings. The right service depends on your country: UK drivers can use services drawing on government Fuel Finder data, while US drivers can search AAA’s finder by city and state or ZIP code.
Compare the price you will actually pay
A national average gives context, but it cannot tell you which nearby station is cheapest. Station prices vary by location and fuel grade, so search with your postcode, ZIP code, suburb or current map location and select the fuel your vehicle requires. In the US, for example, make sure you are comparing the correct grade; in the UK, select petrol or diesel as appropriate.
For each suitable result, check three things together: the displayed price, how far the station is from you or your route, and when that price was last updated. A low price at a distant station may cost more overall once you account for the extra driving. The value of a detour depends on its distance, traffic, your vehicle’s fuel economy and whether you were already going that way; there is no single break-even distance that applies to everyone.
Use a fuel-price service that covers your location
United Kingdom
The UK government’s Fuel Finder system provides retail prices by fuel type, along with station details, amenities, opening hours and update timestamps. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says current prices are published within 30 minutes of a change; its driver factsheet says stations must report changes within that interval. That describes the government system, not a guarantee that every third-party app refreshes at the same time. See the Fuel Finder data guidance.

A government release dated 31 March 2026 lists Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com and RAC Fuel Watch as services using the data. These are examples, not an endorsement or a promise that a service will remain available. The government estimates Fuel Finder could save households that own a car an average of £40 a year; that is a projected average, not a guaranteed personal saving. United States
AAA Club Alliance’s gas-price finder accepts a city and state or ZIP code, and AAA says its finder is updated daily. AAA also describes an app with local price search and directions. Daily updates are not the same as a live pump-price feed, so check the timestamp or the station sign before relying on a listing. AAA’s gas information page describes its finder and participating-station savings; AAA Fuel Prices provides broader averages and comparisons. Those averages are useful context, not the current price at a particular nearby station.

AAA lists savings for members at participating Shell and Love’s locations. Eligibility, participating locations and terms matter: do not subtract a discount from the listed price unless you qualify and can redeem it at that station.
Australia and other markets
Choose a service that covers your jurisdiction and makes its coverage and price-update information clear. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s 2024 review found more than 40 fuel-price apps and websites in Australia during the first half of that year, and noted that their detail varies with local transparency schemes and provider type. Government-operated tools may offer comprehensive near-real-time comparisons where such schemes exist; other providers may emphasize incentives or convenience. A quick way to compare stations before you leave
- Enter your postcode, ZIP code, suburb or current location in a service that covers your area.
- Select the fuel type and grade your vehicle uses.
- Compare several nearby stations by listed price, distance and displayed update time.
- Check whether the lowest-priced station is on your route. If it requires a detour, consider the extra distance, traffic and your vehicle’s fuel economy rather than assuming the lowest per-litre price means the cheapest trip.
- Apply only discounts you are eligible to redeem, then confirm the price shown at the forecourt before filling up.
Check price freshness, discounts and the forecourt sign
Fuel prices change, and a comparison result is only useful if it matches the grade you need and is recent enough to trust. Look for a timestamp and, where available, information about where the data comes from. Government data can make updates more transparent, but a third-party screen may not update at the same instant as the underlying feed. If a listing looks stale or conflicts with the station sign, treat the posted pump price as the price to verify before buying.
Promotions and loyalty schemes can lower the effective price, but the advertised reduction may depend on membership, a participating station, a cap or redemption rules. Check the terms for your location before factoring a discount into your comparison.

In the UK, drivers can report a mismatch between a station’s displayed price and Fuel Finder data through the official service. In other markets, use the relevant provider or local regulator’s reporting route if one is available.
