A detour for through traffic does not necessarily mean a business is unreachable—but access can change by work phase and time, so no map or app can guarantee that a particular driveway or parking space is open.
How do I find the current detour and access information?
- Find the official project page. Search the road, town, or destination with “construction” or “road closure,” then open the responsible city, county, or state transportation agency’s page.
- Check the newest update. Confirm its date, the active work phase, work hours, closure limits, and effective dates. Schedules can be tentative and weather-dependent; Saint Paul notes that its construction schedule may change (City of Saint Paul, Grand Avenue Reconstruction).
- Open the latest map for your type of trip. Look for separate maps for regional detours, local business access, parking, or pedestrian routes. Saint Paul’s Grand Avenue project page lists updated detour and local-business-access maps, so make sure you have the newest version rather than an older map saved on your phone (City of Saint Paul, Grand Avenue Reconstruction).
- Check local 511 or the equivalent live travel service. Use the travel-information service for the relevant jurisdiction to check current closures and impacts. MnDOT and Alaska DOT&PF direct travelers to their 511 and project-information channels for updates (MnDOT, Helping Businesses During Construction; Alaska DOT&PF, Project Development and Businesses).
- Call or message the destination. Ask which entrance to use, where parking is currently allowed, whether an accessible route is available, and whether vehicles can reach the property during your arrival window. Hennepin County advises visitors to contact a business about access or parking changes (Hennepin County, Nicollet Avenue reconstruction in Richfield).
- Follow signs and on-site directions. Use the signed detour or pedestrian route, and obey traffic-control staff. Do not enter a closed road or work area because a map or navigation app suggests it.
Does a road closure mean a business is inaccessible?
Not always. A project may divert through traffic while preserving a route for customers, employees, deliveries, or other local trips. MnDOT explains that a road can remain available for business access even when through traffic is detoured; temporary routes and signs may guide customers as access changes during construction (MnDOT, Helping Businesses During Construction; MnDOT, Hwy 3/Robert St. Project).

But “local access” is not a promise that every vehicle can reach every driveway at every hour. The arrangement depends on the project, its current phase, work hours, turn restrictions, and safety controls. Hampshire County says vehicles may not enter or leave properties within an active work area during working hours for some planned works, while a New Jersey Route 70 mitigation plan provides for driveway access under specified conditions (Hampshire County Council, Planned Maintenance; NJDOT, Route 70 corridor traffic mitigation plan). Treat these as examples of different arrangements, not a universal rule.

Where can I park while the road is closed?
Parking is local and phase-specific. Check the latest project map and update, then confirm the option with the business. A detour map may show how to reach an area without identifying legal parking, and parking arrangements can change as work moves.

Local examples show why it is worth asking. Caltrans’s Hopland 101 project describes street parking where construction is not taking place and additional nearby parking (Caltrans, Hopland 101 Project). In a September 2026 update, Saint Paul directed visitors to park on a nearby street outside the closed section and walk to businesses along Payne Avenue (City of Saint Paul, Payne Avenue Pedestrian Intersection Improvements). Those instructions apply to those projects, not automatically to another street.
- Ask which parking areas are legal and currently open.
- Confirm the walking route from parking to the entrance, including an accessible route if needed.
- If you are making a delivery or need to stop briefly, ask whether a loading area or other arrangement is available; do not assume curb access is permitted.
How do I get there safely on foot?
If a sidewalk or entrance is affected, use the project’s marked pedestrian detour and follow posted instructions. Hampshire County says pedestrian access is directed along footways and points users to traffic-management operatives for guidance; Saint Paul describes pedestrian routes around work areas in its Payne Avenue update (Hampshire County Council, Planned Maintenance; City of Saint Paul, Payne Avenue Pedestrian Intersection Improvements).

Do not walk through a barrier or active work zone to reach a familiar entrance. If the signed route appears to end, conflicts with an entrance you need, or is inaccessible for your situation, ask traffic-control staff or contact the project agency and business for current directions.

Give priority to signs and traffic-control instructions at the site. Web maps can lag behind a changing work phase, while a navigation app may choose a route that is not the official detour. MnDOT warns: “Apps often choose the fastest route, not the official detour” (MnDOT, Helping Businesses During Construction).

If the on-site route is unclear or appears inconsistent with the newest project map, do not improvise through a closure. Contact the project agency using the contact details on its page, and ask the business to confirm the entrance and parking for your trip. Recheck the official update immediately before leaving, especially when work hours or access arrangements matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I confirm before setting out?
- The update and map are for the current phase and have a recent date.
- The route is for local access, not only for through traffic—or you know where the two routes differ.
- You know the permitted vehicle entrance and any turn restrictions.
- You have confirmed legal parking and the walking distance to the destination.
- You know the signed pedestrian route and whether it meets your accessibility needs.
- You have checked for changes to bus stops or other travel arrangements if relevant.
- The business has confirmed access for your intended arrival time, particularly for deliveries or time-sensitive visits.
For example, Caltrans’s 2026 Hopland project update told motorists to anticipate occasional delays of up to 10 minutes during work hours. That is a project-specific estimate, not a general expectation for road construction (Caltrans, Hopland 101 Project).
