How to Find Out Whether Your Federal Student Loans Are in Default

Check the Dashboard and each loan’s My Aid details on StudentAid.gov. If a loan was transferred to DRG, use a separate MyEdDebt account; certain commercially held FFEL loans may require contacting a guaranty agency.

Sign in to StudentAid.gov, check the Dashboard for a red default warning, then open My Aid and inspect the status of each loan in its details. If a loan was transferred to the Department of Education’s Default Resolution Group (DRG), check the separate MyEdDebt.ed.gov account. The account or official loan holder—not a remembered payment date or an unsolicited claim—is the way to confirm your current status.

Check StudentAid.gov first

Federal Student Aid directs borrowers to two places in their StudentAid.gov account: the Dashboard and the loan-level details under My Aid. A red warning on the Dashboard indicates that a federal loan is in default, but check each loan individually rather than assuming one loan’s status applies to all of them. The account is the direct starting point for current status; a payment history alone cannot confirm what the loan’s official status is now. Federal Student Aid’s default FAQ describes this check.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Go to StudentAid.gov and sign in to the account associated with your federal aid.
  2. Look on the Dashboard for a red box warning that a federal loan is in default.
  3. Open My Aid, select the loan details, and review the status for each loan separately.
  4. For any loan that needs clarification, note its loan type, status, servicer or holder, and any transfer information before contacting the organization shown in the account.

As you review the account, distinguish the overall Dashboard alert from each loan’s individual details. The alert is a useful signal that a federal loan is in default; the loan-level record helps you identify which loan the alert concerns and who currently handles it. If you have several loans, make a short list with one line per loan. Include its type, displayed status, servicer or holder, and any transfer note. That makes it easier to ask a precise question and reduces the risk of confusing one loan’s status with another’s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a missed-payment estimate as a substitute for the displayed status. If the account does not make the status clear, contact the official servicer or holder named there and ask it to confirm the current status for that specific loan. Federal Student Aid’s literal question is, “How do I know if my loans are in default?” Its answer is to check the Dashboard warning and the status in My Aid/Loan Details—not to infer status from a date you remember.

Use the route that matches the loan’s holder

A loan’s current holder determines whether StudentAid.gov is enough or whether you need another official account or contact. These routes are not interchangeable: in particular, StudentAid.gov credentials do not sign you in to MyEdDebt.ed.gov.

Situation Where to check What the record can show
Loan appears in your StudentAid.gov account and is handled by its listed servicer Dashboard, then My Aid and the loan details A red Dashboard warning indicates default; the loan details show status loan by loan. Ask the listed servicer to clarify a status you cannot interpret.
Loan was transferred to the Department of Education’s Default Resolution Group (DRG) Create or sign in to a separate account at MyEdDebt.ed.gov, then review Loan Summary A DRG servicer name in Loan Summary confirms default status. StudentAid.gov credentials do not work on MyEdDebt.ed.gov.
Commercially held Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loan Check the loan’s listed holder and contact the guaranty agency shown for it A guaranty agency may be the relevant holder; DRG does not handle this small group of borrowers.

Use the evidence that corresponds to the route. In StudentAid.gov, look for the red Dashboard warning and each loan’s status. In MyEdDebt’s Loan Summary, a DRG servicer name confirms default status. For a commercially held FFEL loan, the guaranty agency shown for that loan is the relevant contact; not every defaulted federal loan is handled by DRG.

Federal Student Aid says a successfully rehabilitated loan may instead show a new servicer and transfer date in MyEdDebt’s Loan Summary. That is a different record from the DRG servicer-name confirmation of default. If the named holder or servicer is unclear, use the official account information to identify whom to contact. Federal Student Aid’s default FAQ explains the DRG and FFEL routes.

How the payment timeline relates to default

A federal student loan generally enters default after at least 270 days without scheduled payments, according to Federal Student Aid. Its FAQ says a loan may be likely to be in default after a year without a full payment if it is not in deferment or forbearance. These are general timeline signals, not a way to determine the current status of an individual account; check the loan record or contact its official holder. The default FAQ provides the timeline.

The 270-day figure is the general default threshold, not a reason to wait until that day to check or seek help. A year without a full payment can be a warning sign if the loan has not been in deferment or forbearance, but it does not replace the official account record. A remembered last-payment date may be incomplete, and the account may contain more than one loan with different statuses or histories. Use dates as context when speaking with the holder, not as your sole proof of default or nondefault.

Three terms are easy to conflate:

  • Delinquent or past due: a payment has been missed and remains unpaid. Federal Student Aid says delinquency begins after a missed payment; delinquency is not the same status as default. See How To Prepare for Student Loan Payments.
  • Default: the loan has reached the applicable default status. Federal Student Aid’s general guidance gives the 270-day threshold for federal student loans.
  • Collections: a process or consequence that may follow default, not another name for the loan’s underlying status.

The distinction matters because missing a payment does not by itself establish that a loan is in default, and collection activity is not the only way to find out. Check the official account even if you have not received a letter. Likewise, receiving or hearing about collection activity is not a substitute for checking which loan is involved and what status its official record shows.

If you cannot find the loan or the records disagree

Look for the current holder or transfer information

Compare the loan details on StudentAid.gov with any transfer information in the account. If the account identifies DRG or indicates a transfer to it, check MyEdDebt.ed.gov separately. For a commercially held FFEL loan, follow the guaranty agency listed for that loan rather than assuming DRG is responsible. A transferred loan can require a different official contact from the servicer you dealt with before.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an account does not show the details you expected, do not assume that the loan has disappeared or that it cannot be in default. First record what you can see: the loan type, any displayed status, and any holder or transfer name. Then use that information to identify the official organization to contact. If StudentAid.gov points to DRG, the separate MyEdDebt sign-in is important because the StudentAid.gov username and password do not carry over. If it is a commercially held FFEL loan, the guaranty-agency route may apply instead.

Ask the official holder to verify the status

If StudentAid.gov, MyEdDebt, a letter, or a servicer’s information appears inconsistent, contact the official holder or servicer named in the government account. Ask it to confirm the current status for each loan and identify the basis for any status you do not understand. Federal Student Aid says borrowers can request documents related to their debt. Keep the answer and any documents with your loan records; do not treat an old notice or an unverified third-party statement as final confirmation. Federal Student Aid’s default FAQ is the official reference for the account checks and document request.

Be specific when you ask for clarification. For example: “Please confirm the current status of this loan, identify who holds or services it now, and explain what the status shown in my account means.” If you have multiple loans, identify them one at a time using the details in your account. If the answer and the account still do not match, ask what documents related to the debt are available and retain the response. This helps keep the status question separate from any later decision about resolving a default.

Do not depend on a mailed notice reaching you

A letter from DRG can confirm status, but it may have gone to an outdated address. Check online and update contact information through the appropriate official account rather than relying on a letter as your only status check. Not receiving a letter does not establish that a loan is current or that it has not been transferred. Federal Student Aid’s guidance on transfers explains what to expect when a loan changes hands: So Your Loan Was Transferred—What’s Next?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do receive a DRG letter, compare it with the current online record and make sure you are looking at the same loan. An old notice can still be useful context, but the current account or loan holder is the right place to verify present status. Keep official correspondence with your account notes so you can refer to it when you contact the holder.

If an official account confirms default

First, use the instructions from the official loan holder to learn which resolution options apply to your loan. Rehabilitation is one option, but the requirements differ by loan type: Federal Student Aid says Direct Loan and FFEL borrowers generally must make nine on-time voluntary payments within a 10-consecutive-month period, while defaulted Perkins borrowers must make nine consecutive payments. Ask the holder about your eligibility, how your payment would be calculated, and what other options are available before choosing. The Student Loan Rehabilitation for Borrowers in Default: FAQs provides the official rehabilitation guidance.

Those payment counts are not interchangeable: the Direct Loan and FFEL description specifies on-time voluntary payments during a 10-month period, while the Perkins description is nine consecutive payments. Before committing, confirm which loan type you have, whether you qualify, how the payment amount is determined, and what options the holder says are available in your case. The status-check step establishes whether the account says default; it does not by itself tell you which resolution option fits or what payment you would owe under that option.

Default can lead to collection activity, but checking your status does not itself trigger collection. Federal Student Aid’s FAQ says government collection action may follow more than 360 days without payment if the borrower does not resolve default; that figure describes the collection discussion, not the default threshold. The FAQ also describes possible wage garnishment of up to 15% of a paycheck and Treasury offset. These are conditional consequences, not automatic results of seeing a default notice, and written notice is sent before Treasury offset begins. Ask the official holder what applies to your account. Federal Student Aid’s default and collections FAQ describes these possibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the 270-day and 360-day figures separate. At least 270 days without scheduled payments is the general point at which a federal student loan enters default. More than 360 days without payment appears in Federal Student Aid’s discussion of government collection action if default is not resolved. It is not an alternative definition of default, and it does not mean that collection happens immediately when you check your account. The FAQ describes possible collection measures and says written notice is sent before Treasury offset begins.

Keep the status check free and official

Federal Student Aid warns borrowers about companies charging enrollment, subscription, or maintenance fees for federal student loan help. Official servicer and DRG services are free. You do not need a paid helper to check StudentAid.gov, use MyEdDebt, or contact the holder listed for your loan. If someone contacts you with a claim about your status, verify it through the official account and the loan holder rather than paying for confirmation. Federal Student Aid’s default FAQ and loan transfer guidance describe the official channels.

This is an account-checking task, not a product purchase. A book, planner, payment accessory, or paid status-check service cannot establish the status shown by the government or the official holder. Do not share your account credentials with a company that says a fee is required to enroll you, maintain your account, or confirm default. Use the government account and the holder identified there, and verify an unexpected claim independently through those official channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my federal student loans are in default?

Sign in to StudentAid.gov and look for a red default warning on the Dashboard. Then open My Aid and check the status in each loan’s details. If the loan was transferred to DRG, check the separate MyEdDebt.ed.gov account as well.

How many days without a payment does it take for a federal student loan to default?

Federal Student Aid’s general guidance says a federal student loan enters default after at least 270 days without scheduled payments. The exact status of a specific loan should be confirmed in the official account or with its current holder; a remembered payment date is not a substitute.

Do my StudentAid.gov login details work on MyEdDebt.ed.gov?

No. Federal Student Aid says MyEdDebt.ed.gov is a separate account for loans transferred to the Department of Education’s Default Resolution Group, and StudentAid.gov credentials do not work there. Review Loan Summary after signing in; a DRG servicer name confirms default status.

What if my defaulted federal loan is not with DRG?

A commercially held Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) may be handled by a guaranty agency rather than DRG. Check the holder listed for the loan and contact the guaranty agency shown for it. DRG does not handle this small group of borrowers.

Does not receiving a default letter mean my loan is current?

No. A DRG letter can confirm status, but it may have gone to an outdated address. Check the official online account and contact the holder or servicer shown there if the status is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a loan delinquent the same as a loan in default?

No. Delinquency means a payment has been missed and remains unpaid. Federal Student Aid distinguishes that from default, which generally follows at least 270 days without scheduled payments. Collections are a process or possible consequence that may follow default, not the same thing as the loan’s status.

Contact the official loan holder or servicer named in the government account. Ask it to confirm the current status for each loan and explain any discrepancy. Federal Student Aid says borrowers can request documents related to their debt; retain the response and documents with your loan records.

What does rehabilitation require if my loan is in default?

Federal Student Aid says Direct Loan and FFEL borrowers generally must make nine on-time voluntary payments within a 10-consecutive-month period; defaulted Perkins borrowers must make nine consecutive payments. Ask the holder about your loan type, eligibility, payment calculation, and other available options before choosing.

Will checking my status trigger wage garnishment or a Treasury offset?

No. Checking your account does not itself trigger collection. Federal Student Aid describes possible collection action, including wage garnishment of up to 15% of a paycheck and Treasury offset, as conditional consequences of default. It says written notice is sent before Treasury offset begins. Contact the official holder for information about your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to pay a company to find out whether my loan is in default?

No. Federal Student Aid warns about companies that charge enrollment, subscription, or maintenance fees for federal loan help; official servicer and DRG services are free. Use StudentAid.gov, MyEdDebt when relevant, or the holder listed for your loan.

The Bottom Line

Check the red warning on StudentAid.gov’s Dashboard and verify each loan’s status under My Aid. If a loan was transferred to DRG, use a separate MyEdDebt.ed.gov account; for a commercially held FFEL loan, contact its listed guaranty agency. If anything is unclear or inconsistent, ask the official holder to confirm the current status and provide relevant debt documents. The 270-day default timeline, possible collection consequences, and resolution requirements are distinct questions—verify the status first and use free official help.
