There is no reliable booking-day trick that guarantees a cheap summer flight. For U.S. July and August trips, Google’s analysis of five years of Google Flights data found the lowest average fares 21 days before departure, within a broader 20–47-day low-price range. That is a historical average, not a promise for your route: if your dates are fixed, booking early can protect your itinerary; if you can be flexible, compare dates and track prices.
1. Compare nearby travel dates
A one-day shift can change a fare, but the amount depends on the route and dates. In Google’s October 2026 analysis, the bigger potential advantage came from changing when you fly, rather than choosing a particular day to buy.
In Google Flights, use the date grid or price graph to compare prices across nearby dates or a wider range. Check the full itinerary: a cheaper outbound flight may not make the round trip cheaper if your return date has a higher fare.
2. Track prices when your plans have room to move
Google Flights lets you track fares and review historical price information for an itinerary. Set a tracking alert for the route and dates you are considering, then use changes as a prompt to reassess—not as a prediction that a fare will rise or fall. Google’s price information is not a guarantee of future prices.

Price tracking is most useful when you can adjust dates or your budget. If the itinerary is fixed and a fare already fits your budget, waiting for a lower price means accepting the possibility that the fare or available flights may change.
3. Use booking-window statistics as context, not a countdown
Google’s October 2026 analysis of five years of Google Flights data found that U.S. July and August vacation fares averaged their lowest prices 21 days before departure, with a low-price range of 20–47 days out. It also says that when your dates are set, “booking early is the safest bet to protect your itinerary.” Those findings describe historical averages, not the best booking date for every destination, route, or year.

International travel is a separate category in Google’s analysis: its lowest average fares appeared 89 days before departure. Across the broader 50–133-day low range, Google says the average price drop is insignificant and advises booking international trips as early as possible. Do not treat that result as interchangeable with the July and August U.S. domestic-travel finding.
Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks report, as summarized in its official newsroom search result, presents different timing findings: domestic economy fares were most affordable 15–30 days before departure, averaging $130 less than bookings made more than six months out. Expedia’s page could not be opened, so this is a narrowly attributed company-reported claim—not a rule to combine with Google’s results or a guarantee of savings.

4. Focus on the days you fly, not folklore about when to book
Google’s 2026 analysis found booking on Wednesday was about 1.4% cheaper than booking on Sunday. That modest average difference is not a dependable shortcut to a lower fare.
Travel dates showed a larger average difference in the same analysis: flying Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% compared with weekend flights; for domestic travel, Monday departures with Tuesday or Wednesday returns were up to 20% cheaper than Sunday round trips. These are published averages, not guaranteed savings on an individual itinerary. Compare the actual fare against the value of taking extra time off or changing your plans.

5. Weigh a connection against the cost of convenience
Google’s 2026 analysis says nonstop tickets cost 20% more on average than tickets with connections. That does not mean a connection is automatically the better deal. Compare the complete trip, including total travel time, the transfer, baggage handling, and whether you would need to change airports.
Google Flights’ help page on finding the cheapest flights notes that lower-priced results can involve trade-offs such as self-transfers or different airports. If a connection is on separate tickets, check who is responsible if a delay makes you miss the next flight before you book.

6. Compare the actual offers and fare conditions
Google Flights’ Best tab balances price and convenience; the Cheapest tab prioritizes price and may include more fares from online travel agencies. Google says it compares offers from more than 300 travel partners, but cautions that “Results may not reflect all available offers.” Treat search results as a useful comparison, not an exhaustive list of every fare.
Before choosing an offer, compare the same itinerary across sellers and check:
- Total fare and conditions: Review the price at checkout, baggage allowance, change or cancellation terms, and any restrictions relevant to your trip.
- Dates and airports: Make sure a lower fare has not shifted your departure or return date, or moved you to a less convenient airport.
- Routing and trip time: Compare nonstop flights with connections, including transfer time and any airport change.
- Seller: Note whether you are booking with the airline or an online travel agency, and understand which seller will handle changes or support.
Expedia’s 2026 report also says its Flight Deals feature highlights fares at least 20% below predicted prices for a route. That is Expedia’s description of the feature, not a claim that every traveler will see a deal or that the fare is available for every route; confirm current access and the offer details in Expedia before relying on it.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- Search your real itinerary. Enter the airports and dates you can actually use, then compare nearby dates if you have flexibility.
- Track a flexible itinerary. Turn on a Google Flights price alert if you are willing to reconsider the dates or fare.
- Compare the whole trip. Check travel days, nonstop and connecting options, airports, total duration, seller, and fare conditions.
- Choose based on your constraints. If dates are fixed, prioritize an itinerary and fare you can accept rather than relying on an average booking window. If plans are flexible, use price changes and date comparisons to decide whether a lower fare is worth the trade-off.
